Johannes's first time (November 1985)
Translation: "Not bad for a first time!"
Little goofy stanley parable theories/headcanons I have (THIS IS SUPER LONG DUDE)
The narrator is neurodivergent in one way or another. My headcanon is that he has maladaptive daydreaming disorder and autism.
I've seen a lot of people theorize that the stanley parable is a game made by the narrator or something along those lines, I personally think that the stanley parable is a story inside of his head that he thinks about while working.
He actually has a job like Stanley, that he fucking hates, so in order to get through the day, he imagines his blorbo that also has his job going on the adventures he desperately wants to go on.
More on the whole ''it's a story inside of his head'' theory. For me, those moments where he like, goes on tangents, loses the plot, or just does whatever, REALLY remind me of myself when I'm trying to think of my story. When I write it down it makes sense, but while thinking about it, I very quickly go on thought tangents and stuff. Also the way he gets annoyed when the story doesn't go as he wants to, me too buddy
Also, remember that one part in the Stanley parable deluxe when he was looking at the steam reviews? I honestly like thinking that the steam reviews are actually comments of his loved ones telling him what they thought of his story. Notice how he harps on the negatives, this is SO relatable to me dude. He also ignores most of the positive ones, y'know, the ones you can see in the background that we never get to read. But he puts a few positive ones on a pedestal, most likely said by people he thinks highly of
Here's one thats more, shippy. My headcanon is that Stanley IS actually a real person. He's the narrator's coworker. And the narrator has a massive crush on him. Which is why he makes Stanley the main character of his little dumbass story (his name might not even be stanley irl, unless the narrator literally has no shame, which, iconic), and the narrator gets to like control him. Which is weird, but people think about weird things when they have a crush let him be weird.
And here's a thing that just really makes me think that the narrator has a crush on stanley. So you know like when you leave your office at the VERY beginning of the game and the narrator says some shit like ''all of his coworkers were gone, what could it mean?'', and that sometimes he says something else or he doesn't say anything at all. Well, there's also that one time where the phone rings and Stanley's so called wife leaves a voice mail telling him that she got the groceries or something, and the narrator is completely SILENT during this part, never mentions it or anything. When I was playing the stanley parable, and that came up, i was also planning on playing the route where we get to meet his wife, who turns out to be fake. So... here's my theory. The phone call was something that happened outside of the story, the narrator happened to hear it, and was like ''fuuuck this guy's got a wife'', and in a state of pure pettiness, decided to imagine stanley getting home and his wife being fake. TELL ME THIS ISNT THE FUNNIEST CONCEPT EVER
Also the whole bucket thing, might be the narrator trying to cope with that, imagining the bucket as stanley's wife (might make sense, probably won't)
Lastly, the way he just, talks to stanley. There are many instances of him like being a massive dick to him, and to me that's because I think stanley (the real one) is like a whole lot younger than the narrator, so it would make sense that he would sometimes get annoyed at this young dumbass. But I think that's as far as their real relationship goes, they're just coworkers at the end of the day, and the narrator is probably too socially awkward to genuinely form a bond. So he does so in his head, where it's safe, where he has all of the control, where stanley doesn't have a wife, where he can say whatever the hell he wants and stanley wont react negatively, wont react at all actually.
I'm not obsessed with this game btw...
Going to elaborate a little bit on the "bucket is stanley's irl wife" theory. Oh and i'll be using she/her pronouns for the bucket
So the narrator does introduce stanley to the bucket, and while i liked the idea of the narrator not knowing stanley's wife at all, i think it could also be fun if she was their co-worker, and somewhat of an acquaintance to the narrator.
Her being an ACQUAINTANCE is really important here, because a thing i noticed during the game is that the bucket's personality is really inconsistent, because the narrator barely knows her, which is why he kind of sees her as a blank slate in his story, he molds her personality to fit the situation of the current story he's telling, and by making her a bucket, he is literally objectifying her.
So here are a few details that support my theory:
The narrator kind of mocks stanley's love for the bucket, what i mean by this is every time he talks about the bucket from stanley's pov, he has this sort of tone (the bucket being a comforting guidance), for example in the ending with mariella where stanley's found dead on the street. He doesn't break character but the way he words it just feels like he's not taking this seriously.
Everyone just has this obsession with the bucket (or buckets in general), and to me it feels like the narrator trying to come up with a reason as to why stanley would like her, she might also be popular at work and have a lot of friends, and the narrator doesn't get it, what's so special about her? People MUST have this weird obsession.
Going back on the inconsistent personality. There are times where the bucket is really domestic (that one ending where they fall into the hole of the mind facility), but sometimes she's villainous, and i think that when the bucket is villainous (stanley killing the bucket ending), it's the narrator's jealousy getting to him
The way all of the bucket endings are just... utter bullshit, like you can't expect me to take that ending where he kills the bucket seriously the narrator is obviously fucking with us. It looks like he's putting way less effort into the stories involving the bucket, because this story runs on emotion (jealousy)
Also in the ending where stanley puts the bucket into a grinder, the narrator first tells him that he's too attached to the bucket and tries to remind him of the iconic characters of the first game, while having the fake wife in the middle.... hmmmm ("Yes I know I'm the one who gave you the bucket but you're spending too much time with it" okay buddy)
The bucket love ending... this one. He portrays stanley as insane for loving the bucket. Though stanley and the bucket are never referred to as romantic (the narrator often calls them best friends), they do have a lot of borderline romantic moments together, such as when stanley softly caressed the bucket when he put her in the escape pod. In this ending you also have the narrator questioning whether he has feelings for the bucket, because lets be honest, he has been a little obsessive about her. I think this is the narrator having a hard time coping with his jealousy over stanley's irl relationship with the bucket and getting confused about WHO he's jealous over.
