In Training || Narcissa & Alice || June 1972
Why Father wanted her to be comfortable in the Ministry of Magic was beyond her; Narcissa did not want to accompany him to the offices of the investigators who handled cases of thievery and damaged property, and she had told him as much, but still he had insisted. She was very nearly a woman now, mere months away from being of age, and she had to learn to handle responsibilities like this. People like them had incited jealousy and covetousness in others, Father explained to her gently; when a Hit Wizard ruined the hedges and broke a window allegedly chasing after a target, he couldnât just sit by and let the Ministry dismiss the injury to their pride and property.
Narcissa, freshly out of school and perturbed about not being permitted to go to Spain with the Selwyn girls on holiday, accompanied her father only grudgingly. Everything, today, was going to be unpleasant for her, she had decided, and if she couldnât convince her father to allow her to go to Spain then she was going to make him feel guilty for it.
While Cygnus Black dealt with the officials in the office, Narcissa was forced to wait outside the door, in the dingy hallway of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement where almost nobody passed by and if they did they gave her odd looks. Narcissa spent five minutes standing in impatience before her boredom overcame her prissy irritation and she slumped onto the bench (straightening up the instant someone walked by), toying with a blonde strand of hair that had fallen in front of her face. The Ministry was dreadfully boring.
Even Aurors-in-training were exposed to the tedium of paperwork; some of the candidates with greatest potential were turned away by all the bureaucracy, the element of politics that not even Auror-work could fully eradicate. After all, criminals needed to be logged and bodies accounted for, and not even the Head Auror could escape filling out forms.
Alice was still unsure whether she enjoyed it or not. On the one hand, it felt good to have everything organized and ready to consult, if ever anyone happened to need it. But on the other hand, would anyone ever need it? Cases were rarely ever the same, most similarities being coincidental. As she filled out the forms for someone else's completed mission --- one Frank Longbottom, it seemed --- she wondered whether all these details would be anything more than words on parchment.
They'd given her two hours to fill the forms out, but Alice made quick work of the pages, finishing with more than an hour to spare. After placing the forms in an envelope and leaving them on Moody's desk, Alice left the office. She closed the door shut behind her, turning around to find a familiar face.
"Narcissa?" she said, unable to keep the hint of coldness out of her tone. To be like ice at the Ministry, where power plays were served with each cup of tea, each knowing smile, was impractical. "Narcissa," she said again, this time with a small smile. "What are you doing here?"
