Deadloch is my current obsession. I mainlined the whole season at the weekend and am on my second watch now and yelling even more.
For those unfamiliar, this is an Australian show that is a perfect and glorious satire of every possible Scandinoir/Dreich British Detective show possible, but it’s also so, so, so much more.
It’s technically a dark comedy but also manages to be a fascinating crime drama as well, while simultaneously managing to fit in deft examinations of misogyny, patriarchal violence, colonialism, racism and homophobia.
I can’t think of any detective/crime shows where there are at least a dozen well-rounded female characters with different personalities, motivations, backgrounds and stories. I can think of none that have at least 7 WOC, including two of the four main police characters. Also so many queer characters all over the place! It’s magnificent.
Also this feral gremlin is my favourite and I love her so much 😍
Give it a chance :) It’s smart and fun and funny and thought-provoking and will fully hit you in the heart when you least expect it. It’s on Prime for the curious.
[Tweet from @/fozmeadows: "human gender and sexuality are very much like animal taxonomy, in that both look structured and simple on the surface, but once you start investigating, it turns out there's actually no such thing as a fish despite the fact that we all know what a fish is, and that's okay"]
As a biologist, that is a fantastic comparison.
We talk about “fish” (which, cladistically, do not exist, there is no monophyletic group of “fish” that simultaneously includes all organisms we understand to be “fish”-like while also excluding, say, humans) because, despite the utter fiction that is fish, it’s still a useful label when we talk about certain features that “fish” tend to have in common.
Gender is absolutely the same way.
Babe wake up new gender dropped, it's got gills

ok I’ve seen a couple of (brain dead) posts here claiming that we shouldn’t accept the rep in glass onion and it’s queerbaiting and a) I need y’all to be soooo fucking fr and stop using that term especially for this bc it genuinely was not queerbaiting and b) I really really really enjoyed just how casual and NORMALIZED it was that benoit had a boyfriend/husband (philip) and literally no one made a big deal of it like to me that is exactly how it’s supposed to be!! like he is just existing with his mans who’s baking bread while benoit’s in the bathtub like this is so domestic and intimate and it’s so fucking clear that they’re together bc ultimately it’s just so refreshing!! like this is the shit I want to see with representation that characters can just exist and be seen with their love interests regardless of who they are and no one makes a big deal of it on screen nor off of it. and c) like benoit is NOT thee main character like he is just the vessel for narration to guide the story along and piece all of it together like he is there to highlight the other characters! it is not him that we r given explicit information on so the tidbits we r privileged with receiving (like him and philip) are extra important and lovely. benoit is there to uplift the other characters and highlight marta and andi and helen while also helping the audience. he is just a lovely texan detective whos going through it and lives with his boyfriend/husband who bakes like that’s goals

I just want to take a moment to thank the camera crew and director for always, always filming Gwendoline Christie to perfection. She towers over every single person ALL THE TIME, and that stairs scene with the low-angle shots that makes her appear even taller, and contrasting high-angle shots of Wednesday?? BRILLIANT, EXQUISITE !
They really went “tall sexy goddess” and we live for it

“And why did girls love [The Beatles] so much? Because the Beatles loved girls. The Beatles were saturated in girl culture - they loved black American girl groups; they had dandy outfits and uncomfortable pointy shoes, like girls. They went out of their way to write about girls in their songs - ‘She Loves You’ is the Beatles siding with a girl in love…They grew their hair long - like girls: an act of alliance in a time when femininity was implicitly inferior. All the teasing they got…but they wanted their hair to look like girls hair.
At a time when the difference between genders was never more rigidly enforced, they rebelled into soft, clannish, sly, joyful femininity. Never combatative…their weapons were the weapons of girls: humour, sexiness, slyness, flirty wit…
…the joy of the Beatles…is that rather than becoming men by killing their fathers, they became their dead mothers. John and Paul…married single mothers; wrote songs about dead mothers and their living mother-wives; left the maelstrom of the Beatles to live the lives of wives: buying farms, making bread, raising children. They rioted into their femininity.”
