thinking about how when jane tells lisbon that he loves her on the plane and she responds with “it’s too late” he doesn’t try to argue or convince her to be with him, because his love for her is the most unselfish part of him. jane needs to tell lisbon that he loves her if she never reciprocates, if she never wants to see him again, if she moves away and marries someone else, because the important part is actually telling the truth that he’s kept buried for so many years. saying what he truly feels is more important than using any kind of manipulation or convincing, and he holds her happiness and well being above any reward or happiness for himself. loving lisbon and being honest about it is its own reward, but that she loves him in return is his greatest joy

And it’s funny because it works every single time. And I don’t think Lisbon has ever tried to stop him or anything, because it’s fully legal and it works. okay so hear me out for a minute here. In the mentalist, devils cherry, there’s the scene where the hallucination of Charlotte is leaving and Jane just says ‘wait’. And he looks so fucking sad and helpless and it’s just absolutely heartbreaking. And I’ve been thinking about it lots and I think I know somewhat why. Like obviously there’s the fact that he’s loosing his daughter again and that’s the hardest thing for him, but I think it also runs deeper. So just hear me out. jane likes control. He always wants to be in control, and at the very least he will try to be in control. When his daughter and wife were killed, he decided he’d kill the killer because that puts him back in control. He likes to manipulate people because that puts him in control of them. Even when he’s kidnapped and tied up, he will at least struggle at his bonds. He will always, ALWAYS try to be in control. and then. The hallucination is leaving. It isn’t a physical thing that he can grab at. It isn’t a person that he can manipulate into staying. Neither he nor anyone else can stop this. There is absolutely nothing he can even try to do to stop this. he’s helpless.
