Reportage Emerging Talent: Alexey Furman
In April 1986, an explosion and fire at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine released a cloud of radioactive particles that spread over the western USSR. While 31 people died in the initial disaster, the longer term health impact has been harder to accurately measure. In Belarus and Ukraine, there has been a significant rise in congenital birth defects and thyroid cancer, as well as other health disorders.
Ukrainian photographer Alexey Furman has documented the less tangible effects of the Chernobyl disaster by spending time with communities on the edge of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, an area around the nuclear plant that has been mostly cleared of humans, except for a few hundred residents who refused to leave.
Alexey writes: “Chernobyl’s dark legacies spread far beyond the abandoned villages and overgrown graveyards of the ’dead zone’. They live on in the everyday lives of those who call this place home. Nobody understands Chernobyl like those who live with it, who share its fate and dig its soil. Just beyond the barbed-wire fence, tales of suffering and loss coexist with a deep-rooted sense of belonging.”
Alexey is one of the promising young photographers whom we selected for this year’s Getty Images Emerging Talent award. The program, which accepts applications every April 1 through mid-May, aims to support photojournalists in the early stages of their career and highlight their work.
