Today was a work day. I work at a nuclear waste facility, meaning go around cleaning nuclear waste. Simple enough, with the right protection. My coworker Ethan was helping me with the bottom floor today, but he didn't sound so good. He sounded stuffy and congested through his haz-suit. "You doin' okay man?" He turned to look at me, "Yea, I think I woke up with a cold or something." Another hour or two of cleaning up disgusting yuck, it was 8:30, time to go home.
Another week had gone by, and as every day passed, Ethan's cold had gotten worse. His brown hair was sticking to his forehead with sweat and he was coughing every 2 minutes. l asked him daily if he was alright, but he would just shrug it off and say, "It's fine, Kathy. It's just the rain before the rainbow." Despite knowing l that wasn't how the phrase went, I believed him, and decided it was okay. On the top floor, there was some pipe reconstruction going on, and some of them were so jagged they could pierce a few layers of skin. I made sure to be careful around them while me and Ethan were cleaning. Around 5:20 or so, Ethan slipped on a small pile of spilled waste, caught the sleeve of his suit on the pipe, ripped it, and fell into a puddle of chemicals. I called the health team the company hired. They checked him out and discovered he was barely scratched, but made sure to thoroughly clean the area the waste had been introduced to.
The next day, I had work off, but the day after was Monday, a work day. I got into my car and started driving to work, but when I arrived, the whole place was fenced off and sourround with vehicles. The police, ambulance, fire district, FBI, you name it, were surrounding the building. A man in a bulky black uniform came over to my window and knocked on it. I rolled it down and asked what was going on. He spoke quickly and calm in an urgent tone telling me there was an incident inside with one of the workers. "Who?" I asked frantically. "I don't know, some guy named Edger or something." Then he changed his tone quickly back to his authoritive manner and said, "It doesn't matter, go home. We can't have people in this area." I started to roll my window up and turn around when a man in a haz-suit ran out of the building screaming. I had to do a double take to realize he had a giant gash on his left arm. He dropped to the floor, twitching for about 30 seconds. He got up and started running around, completely oblivlous of the fact that his arm was profoundly bleeding. There was something more savage about him though. His mouth was wide open, exposing a set of white teeth with black roots, his face contorted in anger. He ran around trying to scratch and bite and spit any one who was around.
I put my car in reverse and got the hell outta therel This was crazy, and I wondered if Ethan was ok since he was most likely in there since it was his work day too. I got home and tried to process what had happened. It was so freaky, but a while later, I had decided to shake it off. I turned on the TV, settled down with l coffee and changed the channel to the local news. A thin woman with curly brown hair was in a parking lot, "I am currently standing at the end of the Myers Nuclear Waste Facility parking lot." I choked on my coffee and tumed the volume up. "There has been some sort of outbreak here. Scientists have contained some of the affected and are testing them now. Signs include surges of aggressiveness, black teeth, large red veins in the eyes, and unkempt nails. They will try to penetrate the skin in any way, to give you their virus. We don't know what their motive is, but they are dangerous if they get out. If anyone encounters these people, don't let them bite you. Even a simple scratch will give you their virus, and you will become one of these."
The channel cut and turned to the local mayor voting from last week. I was scared, I didn't know what to do. What was happening? Am I safe? A million thoughts were swirling around in my brain. I had just done some shopping yesterday so I decided to stay home and keep the news on while I waited.
But everything was the same. Every day, they just urged us to stay inside, don't let the creatures scratch you, and stay safe, they said. They would tell us, "Scientists are studying the infected, they're figuring out a cure." But nothing. The only news that was important was they're smart enough to clumb fences, and they did. They've escaped. I've been inside for 17 days. Every once in a while, one of them passes outside my house. It's fine if you stay quiet. Another amazing peice of news was that they're extremely sensitive to sound. Great. I have plenty of food, so l'm fine. I've got a big house and plenty of money. I've been saving money since I was 16, and l've been taking some pretty crazy jobs.
Finnaly, on day 52, we had more news. The news lady was on repeating what she had been saying for the past 52 days. But strangely, she handed it over to a man with frizzy hair in a lab coat. He began to speak in a thick accent, "My name is Dr. Bryan, and for the past couple of weeks, I have been studying these infected people. It started with one man, Ethan Ingez, who had an accident, and was expose to chemically toxic waste while having the flu. The exact mixtures that made it into his system, we have no idea. But, we have looked at the company's security cameras, and we do know, this is how it happened. Now, as Emily, our newswoman has mentioned a few times," I rolled my eyes, "These creatures are trying to spread the disease that they have. It's unknown why, but more and more people are becoming infected. Stay inside and stay safe. Only come out for emergencies. Speaking of emergencies, we are creating a smart drone that delivers food and water to houses. Until then, try not to go outside. They are fast and smart. They also have a more advanced immune system, which means they can heal 7 times faster than a human can, so lf you absolutely need to, do futile damage. Remember we are still finding a vaccine, so try to leave them alone unless they altack you." I was shocked. Plus, I was running out of food, I had to start rationing. Going out was a really bad idea, especially since the breakout was at its highest. On the other hand, I had to go out before it got any worse.
I drove into at least 3 of the infected. The streets were empty except for the creatures. I drove to the nearest store, I wanted to leave before I had gotten there. It was an empty target. I grabbed a cart and walked slowly at first to make sure it wasn't loud, then picked up the pace. I rushed through the store, getting anything I needed, soap, toothpaste, food, everything. 10 minutes in, I had a full cart. I headed to the frozen food aisle when I heard a whistle. I stopped and listened for a second, and realized it was a tune. Who else was here that I hadn't seen yet? They must have been here a while to be shopping so casually. I looked im between the shelf right next to me. There was a person! A real, living woman! I was so excited, I ran to the the other side to greet her. I think she was kinda shocked because she stopped whistling and paused a l second. I was about to ask if she was ok when she turned around, mouth wide open and eyes bulging. She tried to jump on me. I ran away right before she got her nails on me. Her teeth were half black, and her shirt was ripped in half. She had nasty green and black gouges on her body that looked like bite marks, and scars of scratches everywhere.
I ran to the culinary aisle and found the biggest knife I could. I struggled with opening the plastic container but finnaly got it open just before she got to me. I drove the giant butcher knife down into her head just in time. She twitched a few times before she fell to the floor, brown goop pouring from her mouth. I ran to get my shopping cart and ran to my car. When I got there, there was a fucking infected inside! He seemed to have smiled a bit as he drove off. No matter my house was 10 minutes away. I took my cart and bolted down the street, left and right. I got home safely and turned on the TV. It was an ad! The nuclear waste facility was hiring! And paying 40 dollars an hour! What's the worst that can happen?
It's been two months since l've worked here. The virus is still spreading, but we're super close to finding a vaccine. It doesn't matter anyways, the holding cell for the infected malfunctioned and they all got out. Humanity's last hope, infected and useless. I got bitten and scratched and spat on as well. It doesn't matter, After I did all this research, I've thought..
MAYBE ITS BETTER THIS WAY
