The pen snapped in his hand.
Ink bled down Iliasâ fingers, pooling in the creases of his palm. He cursed under his breath and shoved the papers aside. The same half-written notes heâd told himself heâd revise instead of going. The livestream was still running in the background, muted now, a frozen frame of applause and flashing lights.
He didnât need to watch it.
âYeah, sure,â he muttered to no one. âBet theyâre all thrilled to see you there. Bet heâs thrilled.â
His jaw clenched. The bitterness didnât quite fit right. Pride, maybe. The kind heâd never admit.Â
Youâd made it. You actually made it.
Ilias sighed and grabbed his phone, thumb hovering over your name. He hesitated, then pressed call.
The line clicked.
â...Hello?â
He blinked, sat up straighter at the voice. âKira?â
âYeah?â Her tone was casual, amused. âDidnât expect you to call me, Ilias. The world must be ending.â
He frowned slightly. âKira⌠you picked up Y/Nâs phone?â
A small pause â then a quiet huff of laughter. âNo⌠this is my phone.â
He glanced down. Sure enough, wrong name. Great. Perfect. He could hang up now. He should hang up now.
Instead, he exhaled through his nose, leaned back, and said, âWell, if it was ending, youâd be the first person Iâd call.â
There was a pause. The kind that made his mouth go dry before she laughed again, quieter this time. âI didnât know you practiced your charm on wrong numbers.â
He rubbed the back of his neck, trying to sound nonchalant. âGuess fateâs got better aim than I do.â
âFate, was it?â she teased. âNot your butterfingers?â
âWhatever excuse makes me look less pathetic.â
Kira laughed, the sound curling through the receiver. âAre you calling because you miss me, or because you need someone to complain to because you have FOMO?â
He hesitated, caught between pride and honesty. âLittle of both,â he admitted finally.

Archivist!Neglected reader x TMA x Batfam
Context : what if the neglected reader was born frome distortion became and avatar of the eye frome very younge age , yes the batfam neglected her but , it doesn't mattered as long as she had her real family
Context , Chapter 1
Alfred loved and cared for every family member of Wayne family.
The deceased Mr. and Mrs. Wayne were the ones who had given Alfred the opportunity for this life, Alfred loved those two and still loves them.
Bruce Wayne,
the son of the couple Alfred loved deeply , Master Bruce, the boy Alfred loved like his own son.
Master Bruce had become a good man over the yearsalthough Alfred sometimes wished Bruce didn't prioritize others over himself so much.
Master Bruce was a very intelligent manbut unfortunately Master Bruce had trouble expressing his feelings and affection to his loved ones since the death of his parents.
And that's why Alfred tried his best to convey all the affection Master Bruce had for his children to them.
Alfred cared about all of them
Alfred adored Dick's responsibility
Jason's interest in Gothic literature
Tim's keen observation
Stephanie's optimism
Cas's loyalty
Damian's affection for animals
Duke's nobility
Alfred adored all the children of the Wayne family.
But there was something Alfred couldn't forget until today;
That woman and her daughter,
Years ago, when Alfred heard that Master Bruce had entered a relationship with a woman, he was happy
The hope that Master Bruce would be less lonely quickly disappeared upon seeing the woman
Something about that woman wasn't right
Alfred couldn't describe the woman's face precisely but Alfred was somewhat sure the woman had short curly blonde hair, with curls that looked as if they were twisted together The woman was tall and thin with sharp colored nails with colorful and neon clothes and a hat that covered half of her face.
Nothing about the woman's clothes matched yet strangely they seemed to have harmony
and then the woman introduced herself and a chill went down Alfred's spine
Alfred could swear the woman's voice was like when those old tvs get broke and it start to make a buzzing sound effect.
And when the woman laughed Alfred felt sick
But the worst thing about the woman was her big creepy smile.
Alfred couldn't understand what made him date this terrible woman
Bruce had said he met the woman at a pottery show, as if the woman was friends with the show's host.(alfred questioned who could befriended this woman )
she saw bruce and she approached first
Alfred remembered the woman had told Alfred her name, but Alfred had forgotten which was strange in itself, for Alfred to forget something but Alfred guessed it was better to forget the woman.
Fortunately, the woman and Bruce's relationship didn't last long They were together for only a month and then the woman disappeared without any explanation.
And after 9 months, the woman returned;
with a clearly newborn baby in her hands
The woman was no longer smiling which only creeps out Alfred more
It seemed the woman wanted to leave as soon as possible
and spoke to Bruce and Alfred with a specific bitterness.
The woman went inside a room to talk to Bruce privately, but Alfred was almost sure what the subject of the conversation was...
After fifteen minutes, Bruce came out of the room with that newborn baby and sat on a chair in front of Alfred while his gaze was fixed on that small, pink, and wrinkled child and after a bit of silence Bruce said "she's my daughter..."
Alfred narrowed his eyes and asked "are you sure master bruce?..." Bruce sighed and said "yes, she came and showed me her birth documents, she's mine" "And where is that woman now?...." Alfred asked
Bruce blinked confused and said in a tone that was more like a question "she left....?, went out the door...."
Alfred was sure he hadn't seen the woman leave the room but decided not to say anything and simply replied
"ah, yes..."
From that day Alfred started taking care of that girl,
or as what they had decided to call her,
y/n
y/n was a quiet child.
Maybe a bit too quiet
Alfred knew he shouldn't hate on the girl because of her mother but the feeling Alfred had toward the girl was not hatred,
it was fear....!
Alfred was afraid of the girl and for the girl !
Something about her wasn't right
But it wasn't like this at first
At first the girl was a very lovely baby
Alfred had to admit y/n was a very well-behaved baby compared to Master Bruce's infancy.
She didn't cry much
She wasn't picky with food And she was a very cheerful baby
Very soon Alfred find himself, adoring the little thing.
But no joy last forever.
Alfred was not sure when it all started,but he guessed it was probably from the moment the girl began to talk, not full sentences, but more like the mumbles made by children who are just starting to speak.
At first, Alfred had not even noticed it.
But then one morning, as the girl was murmuring the word papa in that childish tone while Alfred was trying to give her breakfast,
Alfred saw it.
An old tape recorder.
It was placed under the table,recording all this time.
And for the first time, Alfred noticed the sound of old recording in the background.
Alfred could not describe the confusion and fear he felt at that moment.
Alfred quickly turned off the tape recorder, picked up the child, and took a few steps back to grab the gun he had hidden in the cabinet with his other hand.
And then the girl murmured a word again in confusion, and Alfred heard the sound of the tape recorder starting again, and he realized the tape recorder was now on top of the cabinet.
After this, nothing else was normal.
Alfred soon realized that someone or something was recording everything the girl did and said.
But whatever it was, it had not come to take the recorded tapes yet,and it did not seem to be harming anyone.
So Alfred gradually got used to it, and he hid every tape in a closet out of the sight of Master Bruce and the girl.
After this, Alfred felt most of the time that he was being watched when interacting with the girl.
And then the girl's appearance gradually began to show things.
After a while, Alfred could not tell what color the girl's eyes were ,
and then her hair grew long and the curls were not normal, just like her mother, her hair twisted in a way that made Alfred's head spin just by looking at them.
For this reason, Alfred kept the girl's hair as short as possible.
Master Bruce never objected to this, and Alfred did not mention it either.
Some days Alfred could not look at the girl,
but on better days Alfred did his best to show her affection to make up for his bad days.
And then Master Richard came.
Bruce had adopted the young boy after his loss, Master Richard was two or three years older than the girl, Master Richard was also quiet at first, but caring for a more normal child was a breath of fresh air for Alfred.
And unconsciously, Alfred paid more attention to the boy, Alfred justified his favoritism with the fact that Master Richard had just lost his parents.
But gradually, things got worse.
The girl began to say things she should not have known.
Asking alfred about his daughter ( alfred didn't talked to her for a day , he couldn't)
And then on the girl's 5th birthday,
two postmen, tall with uniforms that Alfred was sure belonged to no company and faces that Alfred could not distinguish came
the two postmen said with a sarcastic smirk that they had a package for the girl.
Alfred remembered looking at the car the two men had stepped out of and reading the words
(breekon and hope delivery company)
and then allowing the two men to enter.
The two men went toward the girl and gave her a package and congratulated the girl on her birthday in a happy tone.
When Alfred asked who the package was from,one of the two men smirked and said "from her mother's acquaintances."
Alfred felt a chill run down to his spine upon hearing those four words.
And then without another word, the two men left Wayne's manor.After the two men left
, the girl opened the package and Alfred was terrified inside upon seeing the gift.
An old teddy bear, fur and body parts sewn together piece by piece, with fur that did not look like the fur of a doll, and two large green eyes that looked too much like real eyes with veins and a red halo at the edges of the eyes, the only normal thing about the doll was that a colorful bow tie was placed around the teddy bear's neck.
Alfred even saw some cobwebs in the teddy bear's box!
Of course, the girl seemed very happy and excited
and young Master Richard also complimented the bear with a smile.
As time passed, Alfred became more certain that the teddy bear was cursed and possessed.
Alfred had seen the bear's eyes follow the girl's movements, and even once when Alfred was looking at the girl, the bear's head turned toward Alfred and stared at him,and at night, when the girl hugged the bear in her bed, the bear's eyes glowed green.
Once when Alfred was cooking food, he saw the bear on the cabinet while holding a knife.
Alfred had tried his best to get rid of the doll.
He had thrown the doll in the trash, burned it, cut it into pieces, thrown it into the river, shot it,but always without exception, the doll had returned the next day.
Finally, Alfred succeeded in imprisoning the doll in the batcave.
Alfred told the girl that she had probably lost the doll when she went to play in the yard.
The girl was very upset and cried, but eventually let it go, or if she did think about it, she did not mention the doll.
And then one night, something happened that Alfred could not tolerate.
Alfred remembered that night well.
It was 1:00 AM. Master Bruce and young Master Richard were on patrol,and Alfred was reading a book when he heard a sound,a soft and echoing whisper.
Alfred sharpened his ears and realized that the sound was a lullaby. Someone was whispering a lullaby in the mansion,with a voice that Alfred had never heard before.
The voice was scratchy, as if it were coming out of a broken television.
Alfred had quickly picked up his shotgun and moved silently toward the source of the sound.
Realizing that the sound was coming from inside the girl's bedroom troubled Alfred.
Alfred opened the door in silence.and oh lord, how alfred wish he had never seen that thing.
A very tall man (at least alfred thought it was a man) was standing in the middle of the room, thin, elongated, with long, tangled, and wavy golden hair, and a long neck that seemed to be broken in several places, and he wore colorful and neon clothes.
With large hands and excessively long fingers, he held the sleeping girl in an imitation of how mothers embrace infants and was softly whispering a lullaby to the girl.
The creature, having noticed Alfred's presence, turned its head toward Alfred and gave a large smirk, holding its long index finger in front of its mouth as if signaling Alfred to be quiet.
Alfred at that moment, without a second of hesitation, shot the creature, but somehow the bullet did not hit the creature, and the creature had already placed the girl in her bed and gone inside a yellow door that Alfred was certain had not been there before.
Alfred, with the departure of the creature, had quickly turned on the room light and quickly hugged the girl now that she was awake and took her out of the room.
When the girl asked Alfred in confusion what had happened,
Alfred had only replied that from now on, the girl would sleep in Alfred's room.
This incident had frightened Alfred more than he would admit.
The thought of a small child dying because of Alfred's inattention by a creature , THAT creature , terrified Alfred.
Alfred had spoken with Master Bruce about this after the incident, but to Alfred's surprise, Master Bruce had only replied with "she seems normal and fine to me".
This inattention from Master Bruce, and the events that were happening to the girl over which Alfred had no control, had caused Alfred to turn to drinking alcohol again,
just like when his own daughter had died, stemming from a feeling of helplessness that was becoming suffocating for Alfred.
Until one day, an old man came to visit them.
An old man named simon fairchild.
Alfred had heard the name of the fairchild family, a very wealthy family in Britain that funded one of the space stations.
The old man, simon, informed Bruce and Alfred that the girl's mother was actually Simon's adopted child,
and when Simon realized he had a grandchild, he quickly came here to see his grandchild.
And then Simon explained how difficult it must have been for them to raise the girl alone, especially in a city like Gotham, and Simon would be happy if Master Bruce allowed him to take the girl with him to Britain, and for the girl to live with him.
Bruce was happy to hear what Simon saidbut Alfred was hesitant, at least initially, but after thinking for a bit, that small and treacherous part of Alfred that was relieved by the girl's absence won,
and Alfred allowed Simon to take the girl to Britain.
Alfred was happy with the girl's departure, and had peace after a long time and this made him feel guilty.
Shortly after the girl left, Master Jason joined the family and Alfred very soon no longer thought about the young girl who once walked in this mansion
The girl was gone,
and the only things that remained of the girl were her
room
the teddy bear imprisoned in the batcave
and the old and cursed portrait that was consigned to oblivion in the hallways of the mansion.
and this is it , the first chapter i hope yellow enjoyed it
I would be so happy to hear your thoughts and theories on this in the comments

Y/N knew dinner was dead before the soup course.
Not in the way movies do it. No slammed silverware, no shouting under chandeliers worth more than her whole building. Dinner at Wayne Manor died quietly, politely, under soft amber lights and the old-house smell of lemon oil and antique wood. Money lived in the walls here, so old it did not bother to announce itself. It died somewhere between Alfred setting a bowl of tomato bisque in front of her with a kind, distant 'Miss Y/N,' and Bruce checking his phone under the table, careful and practiced, like he believed no one noticed unless he wanted them to.
Y/N noticed. Y/N always noticed.
She noticed Dick leaning slightly toward Tim when Tim muttered something under his breath, both of them sharing one of those tiny, familiar smiles that held history. She noticed Jason arriving late and still getting a look from Alfred that was more exasperated affection than reprimand, noticed the way Damianâs shoulders relaxed by a millimeter when Bruce asked him about some art restoration thing at school, noticed Alfred remembering that Jason liked extra cracked pepper without Jason asking, that Timâs coffee appeared like a ritual offering before dessert, that Dick got the good chair near the hearth because his knee had been bothering him even though nobody said that part out loud.
She noticed that her water glass stayed empty for eight minutes.
It wasnât Alfred being cruel. That might have been easier. Cruelty had teeth. You could point to cruelty and say, There. See? Thatâs where it bit me. This was softer, slipperier, a velvet glove closing slowly around her throat. Alfred was polite. Alfred had invited her. Alfred had even sounded pleased when he called, in his crisp old-fashioned way, asking whether she might âjoin the family for dinner this evening, if her schedule allowed.â For three entire minutes afterward, Y/N had stood barefoot in her kitchen in a sleep shirt, holding her phone to her chest like it had warmed itself into a living thing.
Family dinner. He said family dinner.
She curled her hair. Not too much. Just enough to look like she cared, not enough to look desperate. There was a math to being unwanted. Too casual and you looked ungrateful. Too dressed up and you looked like you were begging. She picked a soft black sweater that made her feel pretty but not loud, gold hoops, lip gloss, jeans without holes. Bruce was the kind of father you did not know how to disappoint until you already had.
Now she sat between an empty chair and a stretch of table wide enough to feel like a joke. She smiled when no one looked at her. She smiled harder when they did.
âSo, Y/N,â Dick said after a lull stretched thin and shiny across the table. He looked at her with the bright, practiced warmth of someone who could charm a locked door into opening. âHowâs, uh, your place?â
Her place. Not work, not life, not her. Just the spot she existed in when they forgot to text back.
âItâs good,â she said, and her voice came out too cheerful, as a sticker slapped over cracked glass. âStill has the worldâs most haunted radiator. It screams at three in the morning, so honestly, I respect the commitment.â
Jason snorted into his drink, almost against his will. It was small, barely a sound, but it hit her like sugar.
She turned toward him too fast. âRight? Like, if Iâm gonna be terrorized by a heating system, at least be theatrical about it.â
âGotham landlords are their own Rogueâs Gallery,â Jason said.
Y/N grinned. âMine once told me black mold was âdiscoloration.ââ
Tim looked up from his plate, mouth twitching. âThatâs insane.â
âI know. I was like, babe, thatâs discoloration from the spores.â
There it was, for half a breath, the tiny golden thing she had been chasing all night. Dick laughed. Tim smiled. Jason shook his head, almost amused. Even Damian made a quiet huff that could have been disdain or a laugh hiding under a tiny assassin cloak.
Then Bruceâs phone vibrated against the table.
The sound was soft, barely audible, but the whole room moved around it. Bruce glanced down. Dickâs attention shifted. Timâs eyes flicked toward Bruce like a bird catching a change in pressure. Jason leaned back. Damian went still. Alfred appeared from nowhere with the eerie precision of a man summoned by emotional withdrawal.
Whatever warmth had opened toward her closed again.
Bruce stood. âExcuse me.â
No one asked where he was going. No one asked what was wrong. No one asked why the family dinner Alfred invited her to could be interrupted so easily. They just adjusted, seamless and silent, like this was a dance they learned years before she found the ballroom.
Y/N kept smiling.
Itâs fine. Itâs literally fine. People have lives. Heâs busy. Heâs Bruce Wayne. What did you expect, a dad montage? Get real.
âMore potatoes, Master Jason?â Alfred asked.
âYeah, thanks, Alf.â
Y/N looked down at her plate. Her food had gone cold in delicate, expensive little shapes. She pressed her fork into a carrot until it split clean in two.
She did it three more times.
She asked Tim about some new tech thing she barely understood, and he answered politely for maybe thirty seconds before Dick jumped in with a correction that turned into a conversation she couldnât enter without sounding like sheâd Googled the concept in the bathroom. She asked Damian about med school, and he stared at her like sheâd tried to pet a wild falcon with barbecue sauce on her fingers before saying, âAdequate.â She asked Jason if heâd read anything good lately, and something shuttered in his face so fast she wondered what sheâd stepped on, what wire sheâd clipped, what invisible bruise she had pressed her thumb into without meaning to.
By dessert, she stopped trying.
Alfred served crème brĂťlĂŠe because of course he did, because this familyâs emotional constipation came with caramelized sugar and antique spoons. He set everyoneâs dish down in an order he probably didnât think about, the same way he probably didnât think about breathing. Bruceâs place, though Bruce still hadnât returned. Damian. Dick. Tim. Jason. Then her.
âThank you, Alfred,â she said.
âYouâre quite welcome, miss.â
He was kind. He was always kind. That made it worse.
When she left, Bruce still wasnât back. Dick gave her a one-armed hug that smelled like expensive cologne and cold air, already looking over her shoulder when he pulled away. Tim said, âGood seeing you,â like theyâd bumped into each other at a dentistâs office. Damian inclined his head with princely menace. Jason walked her to the door, which almost made her stupid heart do something humiliating, until he said, âDrive safe,â and nothing else.
Y/N smiled. âAlways do.â
âYou absolutely donât,â Jason said, and there was another flicker there, another almost-warmth, another match struck in a windstorm.
She wanted to cup her hands around it. Wanted to say, you noticed? You noticed something about me? Instead, she winked because her personality apparently had the survival instincts of a raccoon in a dumpster. âAllegedly.â
Jasonâs mouth twitched again.
Then Alfred was behind him, asking whether heâd seen where Damian left his scarf, and Jason turned away.
By the time she got into her car, her face hurt from smiling.
The drive back to her apartment blurred under Gotham rain, the city smeared neon and oil-slick through her windshield. Her phone sat in the cupholder, silent and black. No missed calls. No texts. Not even a pity âthanks for comingâ from Dick, who sent heart emojis to baristas and probably apologized to furniture when he bumped into it. The manor disappeared behind her in the rearview mirror, huge and lit and untouchable on its hill, and Y/N laughed once, sharp and ugly, because if she didnât laugh, she was going to make a sound she couldnât take back.
Her apartment greeted her with the radiator screaming, like the idea of heat had personally wounded it. The hallway smelled like damp carpet and someoneâs weed pen. Her neighborâs dog barked twice, then gave up. She locked the door, slid the chain into place, and stood there with her keys still in her hand, rain cooling on her sweater, hair frizzing around her face in sad little spirals.
For half a second, she thought the lights flickered in time with the radiatorâs wail, but when she blinked, everything was steady again, probably just tired eyes and cheap bulbs. Still, a chill ran up her spine that had nothing to do with the weather, and the thin hairs on her arms prickled. She dropped her purse.
It hit the floor with a soft, pathetic thud. That was what did it. Not Bruce leaving. Not Alfred forgetting her water. Not the way the boys formed a whole weather system around each other while she sat outside it with a spoon in her hand. Her purse falling was the final betrayal, spilling lip gloss, receipts, a half-empty pack of gum, and her emergency mini deodorant across the floor like even her belongings had given up on structure.
âOh, my God,â she whispered, and the smile finally broke.
She sank down beside the door, back against peeling paint, and cried with one hand over her mouth, like someone might hear and report back that Bruce Wayneâs grown daughter was being embarrassing in a walk-up apartment with a cursed radiator and unpaid parking tickets on the fridge. The tears came hot and furious, dragging mascara into the corners of her eyes, making her nose run, making her feel seventeen and five and twenty-seven all at once.
Why donât they love me?
The thought was so blunt it felt childish, which made her cry harder. She hated herself for it. She hated the little greedy creature in her chest that still wanted a seat at the table, still wanted Bruce to remember her favorite dessert, still wanted Jason to tease her on purpose and Dick to call just because and Tim to send her weird memes at two in the morning and Damian to tolerate her in the specific way he tolerated people he secretly cared about.
She wanted too much. She always did.
She cried until the radiator stopped screaming, like even it had gotten uncomfortable. Then she wiped her face with the sleeve of her nice black sweater, crawled across the floor to collect the guts of her purse, and found the little brown paper package she had forgotten about.
It had arrived three days ago, tucked between bills and a glossy flyer for a gym she would rather haunt than join. Her name was written on the label in purple marker with a little crescent moon over the Y. Inside was the ritual kit sheâd bought at two in the morning from an Etsy shop called Witching You Well, after half a bottle of cheap wine and a doomscrolling spiral that started with âhow to make your family value you emotionallyâ and ended somewhere around âfull moon attraction spell no experience needed.â
The listing had promised warmth, attention, open-hearted bonds, and gentle energetic magnetism.
It had also promised âbeginner-friendly.â
She stared at the package through swollen eyes.
âNo,â she said to the empty apartment. âAbsolutely not.â
The apartment said nothing. Traitor.
She showered. She changed into an oversized T-shirt and shorts. She ordered Taco Bell because if the night was going to be humiliating, it might as well involve nacho cheese. Then she sat cross-legged on her living room floor beneath the window, watching the full moon hang over Gotham as a coin dropped into dirty water, and read the instructions printed on thick cream paper.
Her Taco Bell bag sat beside her, warm and fragrant and deeply unspiritual. Crunchwrap Supreme. Baja Blast. Cinnamon twists because she had impulse-control issues and a rewards account.
âThis is so stupid,â she muttered.
The kit looked stupid too, but in a committed way. Little glass jars of herbs. A packet of graveyard soil with a sticker that said ethically sourced, which raised several questions. Tiny animal bones wrapped in red thread. A black anointed candle that smelled like myrrh, smoke, and someoneâs aggressive crystal shop. A piece of white chalk. A folded square of velvet. A warning card that said intention matters most in a font that felt judgmental.
Y/N picked up the chalk.
âI am a grown woman,â she told herself. âI pay taxes. I have dental insurance. I should not be drawing a circle on my floor because my emotionally unavailable billionaire father has the paternal instincts of a rock.â
Y/N looks over to her pet rock. âSorry, Rocky.â
The pet rock stared back, one of the googly eyes peeling.
Still, she pushed the coffee table aside.
The chalk dragged across the hardwood in pale, dusty arcs. She followed the diagram, tongue caught between her teeth, pausing every few minutes to take a bite of crunchwrap. Grief made her hungry. Taco Bell was basically a weighted blanket for her stomach. She placed the herbs at the compass points. She sprinkled graveyard soil in a careful ring, trying not to think about whose graveyard or how anyone ethically sourced dirt from it. The bones clicked softly when she laid them down, small and delicate as broken punctuation.
The candle stood in the center.
Y/N lit it with a pink lighter shaped like a tiny frog.
For a moment, nothing happened.
The flame fluttered. Rain tapped the window. Somewhere below, a car alarm bleated twice and gave up, very Gotham of it. Y/N stared at the circle, then at the instructions, then at her Baja Blast, sweating condensation onto the floor.
âCool,â she said. âSo Iâm mentally ill.â
The candle flame snapped blue.
Y/N froze.
The room temperature dropped so fast her breath fogged. Just for a moment, Y/N hesitated, expecting nothing more than a little warmth, maybe a sense of comfort, maybe her phone buzzing with a kind word from someone she loved. That was all she meant for this silly ritual to do: draw love closer, soften hearts, close a gap. But as the shadows beneath the furniture lengthened, not like darkness falling but like something stretching awake, she realized with a lash of panic that whatever was happening was far stranger and rawer than she had expected. The chalk lines on the floor began to glow, faint at first, then brighter, a sickly white-gold that pulsed in time with something deep below the building. The herbs blackened without burning. The graveyard soil shivered. The animal bones lifted half an inch off the floor and began to tremble.
Y/Nâs heart climbed into her throat while wearing tap shoes.
âNope,â she whispered. âNope, nope, nope. We are not doing this. Return to sender.â
The floor opened.
Not cracked. Not broke. Opened, like the hardwood had been a lid and something underneath had fingers. Heat roared up, wet and sulfurous, carrying the stink of smoke, iron, and ancient flowers left too long in funeral water. The chalk circle became a mouth of light. Behind it, impossibly far down, something red and black moved in layers: wings or curtains, teeth or stairs, eyes blinking open in the dark like city lights seen from an airplane.
Y/N screamed, scrambled backward, and slammed into the couch hard enough to knock a throw pillow onto her head.
A hand rose from the circle.
It was elegant, long-fingered, black-clawed, wearing three gold rings and one friendship bracelet that said SLAY in pastel beads.
She stopped screaming, confused.
The hand gripped the edge of the glowing circle. A figure pulled himself up off the floor with the lazy grace of someone climbing out of a pool at a resort where everyone else was damned. He was tall, beautiful in a deeply upsetting way, with dark red skin polished by firelight, black horns sweeping back through glossy hair, and eyes like molten pennies. He wore a black suit with no shirt under the jacket because, apparently, hell had a dress code, and it was âclub promoter at the apocalypse.â His smile was slow, sharp, and amused.
Y/N pressed herself against the couch. âAre you the Etsy witch?â
The demon looked around her apartment, nostrils flaring delicately. âNo.â
âOkay.â Her voice pitched higher. âCool. Hate that.â
His gaze drifted to the Taco Bell bag.
Y/N followed his eyes and immediately grabbed it. âDonât.â
âYou summoned me with an offering.â
âI summoned, allegedly, good vibes.â
âYou opened the Third Gate.â
âI bought a beginner-friendly affection ritual from Witching You Well!â
The demonâs smile widened. âMmm. That one.â
âThat one?â Y/N demanded. âWhat does that mean? Why did you say it like sheâs messy?â
He stepped fully into her living room, and the circle closed beneath him with a soft, obscene sigh, leaving her hardwood floor perfectly intact except for the glowing chalk and one scorch mark vaguely shaped like Florida. He moved like gravity liked him better than it liked other people. The candle flame bent toward him. The shadows did too.
âYou asked to be adored,â he said.
Her mouth opened, then closed. Her face burned. 'I asked for help.'
âYou asked for longing. Attachment. Devotion. Attention so deep it becomes hunger.â
âNo, I asked for people to be nicer to me.â
âYou wrote your petition in purple gel pen with a crying cat sticker on it.â
âThatâs between me and God.â
âEvidently not.â
Y/N glared at him through drying tears, fear and embarrassment tangling into something hot enough to stand on. âLook, Iâm not doing whatever this is. Iâm having a bad night. Iâm lonely. Iâm probably dehydrated. My family sucks emotionally and I made a weird little floor circle about it. Thatâs all.â
The demon tilted his head, studying her with a softness that wasnât soft at all. âYour family.â
Her throat tightened.
âYeah,â she said, quieter. âMy family.â
He stepped closer, and every instinct in her body told her to run, but there was nowhere to run inside a one-bedroom apartment with a laundry basket blocking the hallway. He crouched in front of her, resting his elbows on his knees, all that infernal elegance lowered to eye level. His expression was almost tender. That made it worse.
âYou want them to look at you,â he said.
Y/N swallowed.
âYou want them to feel the room change when you leave it. You want your name to taste important in their mouths. You want to stop being an optional chair at a table already full.â
Her eyes stung again. âShut up.â
âYou want love.â
âI said shut up.â
âAnd you would make a deal for it.â
The silence after that had weight.
She looked away first. The apartment felt too small. Every cheap lamp, thrifted blanket, and half-dead plant watched her like a trial. She thought of Bruce standing up from dinner without touching her shoulder. Alfred served everyone in the order love had taught his hands. Jason almost laughed, then turned away. Her phone has no messages. Her life, full of people she could forgive and forgive and forgive until there was nothing left but a smiling bruise.
âWhatâs the deal?â she asked.
The demon smiled.
A contract appeared in his hand, unrolling in a long ribbon of black parchment covered in red script that shifted when she tried to read it. The air smelled suddenly like burnt sugar.
âSimple,â he said. âFrom this night forward, those who meet you will be drawn to you. Fascinated. Devoted. Protective. The shape will vary. Love, friendship, obsession, worship. Human hearts are sloppy instruments.â
Y/Nâs stomach twisted. âObsessed?â
âA word with bad publicity.â
âThat is literally a red flag word.â
âYou summoned a demon.â
âBy accident!â
âAnd yet.â
She rubbed both hands over her face. âWill this finally get my family to like me?â
The demonâs smile did not move, but something in it sharpened.
âAgree,â he said, âand youâll never have to feel invisible again.â
She stared at the contract. It shimmered in the air, terrible and beautiful, each letter curling like a tiny hook. Her whole body hummed with terror. Her mind screamed that this was insane, that she should throw the candle out the window, that she should call someone. Except who would she call? Bruce?Â
Hey, Dad, sorry to bother you during whatever secretive, emotionally unavailable, rich guy thing you are doing, but I opened hell in my living room because I wanted you to ask me about my day.
She laughed once. It cracked halfway through.
âWhat do I have to do?â she asked.
âA small monthly offering.â
âThat sounds suspiciously vague.â
âMost sacred things do.â
âCan I Venmo you?â
His eyes glinted. âNo.â
âApple Pay?â
âNot sufficient.â
Y/N stared at him, then at the Taco Bell bag still clutched in her hand. âIs this about the Taco Bell? Because honestly, I can do once a month. Crunchwrap, Baja Blast, maybe a Doritos Locos Taco if hell is feeling fancy.â
The demonâs gaze dropped to the cup.
He plucked the Baja Blast from beside her before she could stop him, pierced the lid with the straw in one smooth motion, and took a sip. His expression changed, just slightly.
Y/N gasped. âThat is mine.â
âThis is radioactive.â
âItâs beautiful.â
âIt tastes like a melted prophecy.â
âGive it back.â
He took another sip.
Y/N pointed at him. âYou are already the worst man Iâve ever met, and Iâve been to family court.â
The demon lifted the contract. âDo you agree?â
She should have said no. Later, she would replay that moment until it wore thin at the edges. The glowing chalk. The candle flame. The demonâs mouth on her straw. The ache in her chest, sitting there like a starving dog. She would tell herself she had been manipulated. She would tell herself she was tired. She would tell herself a lot of things that were true and not enough.
But in that moment, all she could see was the manor dining room and all those faces turned away from her.
Y/N reached out.
The contract curled around her finger like something alive. A bead of blood welled from her skin, bright and sudden. She flinched, but the parchment drank it before it could fall.
âI agree,â she whispered.
The candle went out.
For one second, the world vanished.
Then the apartment slammed back into place around her, louder than before. Rain. Radiator. Her own breathing. The demon stood and stretched as if theyâd finished a boring meeting.
âExcellent,â he said.
Y/N looked down at her finger. No cut. No blood. âSoâŚthatâs it?â
âThatâs it.â
âAnd my family?â
He took another sip of her Baja Blast.
Y/Nâs eyes narrowed. âWhat?â
âThe enchantment applies to those you meet from this point forward.â
The words landed wrong.
She blinked. âWhat?â
âNew souls. New encounters. New threads.â
âNo.â She stood too fast, dizzy with it. âNo, no, thatâs not what I asked for.â
The demon looked at her with polite interest. âIsnât it?â
âI specifically said my family.â
âDid you?â
âYes!â
He tilted his head. âDid you say, in exact contractual language, that you wished the spell to retroactively affect known biological, legal, emotional, and household relations currently existing in your life?â
Y/N stared at him.
âI said my family like a normal person!â
âNormal people do not open the Third Gate with grave dirt and fast food.â
âDonât flip this on me!â Her voice rose, hot and shaking. âYou knew what I meant.â
âMeaning is a door. Language is the key. You brought a spoon.â
âI was crying!â
âYes,â he said, and smiled. âYou were.â
That smile scraped something raw inside her.
Y/N stepped toward him, fists clenched, fear burning off in the face of something much bigger and meaner. âThatâs not fair.â
âHell rarely is.â
âYou tricked me.â
âYou were imprecise.â
âI mentioned my family!â
âYou should have spoken up better.â He leaned down slightly, voice velvet over a blade. âI couldnât hear you. Youâre so shy.â
For a moment, Y/N went perfectly still.
Then her face changed.
The smile came first, automatic and awful, spreading across her mouth while her eyes went glossy and furious. It was the expression people always misunderstood, the one that made them think she was fine, joking, or too soft to make a scene. The demon watched it arrive like a collector admiring a rare knife.
âYouâre a dick,â she said softly.
His eyebrows lifted. âThere she is.â
âNo, actually, shut up. I bought this ritual from an Etsy witch called Witching You Well. There was not supposed to be a demon. There was supposed to be Taco Bell and sadness. Maybe DoorDash some ice cream later and cry into it while I watched CaseOh play some indie horror game. That was the plan. That was the vibe.â
âThe vibe,â he repeated, tasting the word.
âYes, the vibe! Not hell! Not a contract! Not whatever manipulative Hot Topic Hades nonsense youâre doing in my living room!â
He considered this. âHot Topic Hades.â
âDonât you dare enjoy that.â
âI donât enjoy things. I consume them.â
âYouâre literally drinking my Baja Blast.â
He looked at the cup. âA regrettable exception.â
âGive it back.â
âNo.â
âGive me my Taco Bell back!â
He glanced at the bag. âThe offering was accepted.â
âI used points to redeem that, you evil leather asshole!â
âYour sacrifice honors the pact.â
âMy sacrifice was five dollars and emotional damage!â
âSpeaking of sacrifice,â he said lightly, âthe monthly offering is due every full moon.â
Y/N froze again, anger snagging on the word.
Slowly, she said, âOffering.â
âYes.â
âTaco Bell.â
âNo.â
Her pulse began to pound.
âYou said small,â she said.
âIt is small. In the cosmic sense.â
âWhy did you say it like that?â
The demonâs smile returned, slow as a door closing. âHuman sacrifice. Once a month.â
The room tilted.
Y/N stared at him, waiting for the punchline, waiting for the universe to remember it was supposed to be absurd, not monstrous. The rain tapped the window. The candle smoked silently in the circle. Somewhere outside, a siren wailed and faded into Gothamâs endless throat.
âNo,â she said.
âYes.â
âNo, I didnât agree to that part.â
âYou agreed to the deal.â
âI agreed to Taco Bell!â
âYou assumed Taco Bell.â
âBecause you were holding my Taco Bell!â
âI was hungry.â
âYouâre a demon!â
âAnd?â
She dragged both hands through her hair, backing away from him. Her thoughts scattered, slammed into each other, and reformed badly. Human sacrifice. Once a month. Soul. Family still will not love me. New people. Obsessed. Hell. Baja Blast. Fuck, fuck, fuck.Â
For a terrible, suspended moment, she couldnât breathe. The words ricocheted through her skull, too big to fit, crowding out everything else. Her mouth tasted like metal. She pressed her back against the wall, palms shaking, staring at the demon and then at her own hands, as if some mark would bloom there, proof that sheâd ruined everything.
The sick horror unfurled slowly, crawling up her spine: this wasnât a joke or a nightmare, and there was no way to wake up unchanged. Guilt landed somewhere under her ribs and rooted deep, hard, cold, and permanent.
She felt it ripple beneath her skin: regret, shame, the wild and useless wish to go back just five minutes and choose anything else. The silence pressed around her, thick as blood, and she flinched from her own reflection in the window, afraid suddenly of what sheâd let herself become.
"No," she said again, but now it came out smaller. "No, I cannot. I am not killing people. I am not. I am a lot of things. I am annoying, I am clingy, I am bad at texting back when I am sad, I once lied to a dentist about flossing, but I am not that."
The demonâs expression didnât change.
âIf you fail,â he said, âyour soul returns with me.â
Her skin went cold. âReturns?â
âYou opened the gate. You signed the contract. You carry my mark now.â
She looked down at herself wildly. âWhere?â
âIn the tender architecture of your being.â
âI hate when my soul is legally binding.â
âA month passes quickly, Y/N.â
The sound of her name in his mouth made the room feel wrong.
She swallowed hard. âUndo it.â
âNo.â
âPlease.â
âNo.â
âIâll pay you.â
âYou already have.â
âIâll leave a bad review. TikTok can ruin businesses in a day now.â
That made him laugh. It was a beautiful sound, which felt deeply unfair.
âHumanity,â he murmured. âTiny, doomed, obsessed with ratings.â
Y/Nâs eyes burned. âMy family still wonât love me.â
For the first time, the demon said nothing. His face stilled, eyes catching the city light in a way that made her think of old keys and locked doors. There was a flicker of something hungry in his expression, as if her words, her raw grief, were a page in a book he had been waiting to read for a very long time.
That silence was worse than every joke. It made the truth stand there naked between them. She had sold something she hadnât understood for a wish that wouldnât even work. The grief of it moved through her slowly, almost politely, before widening into panic.
âTake it back,â she whispered.
He finished the Baja Blast with one long sip, the straw rattling at the bottom of the cup.
âRude,â she said, voice breaking.
The demon set the empty cup on her coffee table. Then he reached into the Taco Bell bag, pulled out her Crunchwrap, and took a bite.
Y/N made a sound of pure betrayed violence. âAre you kidding me?â
âNeeds fire sauce.â
âI hope you choke.â
âI invented choking.â
âOf course you did, you arrogant basement bitchâ
He walked backward toward the fading chalk circle, still eating her Crunchwrap. The shadows gathered around him like a coat being lifted onto his shoulders.
Y/N lunged forward, not because she had a plan, but because he had her food and her soul, and apparently that was where her survival instincts drew the line. âGive it back!â
He vanished.
The circle flashed once, red and white and hungry, then went dark.
Y/N stumbled into empty air and nearly ate shit on her own rug. Silence crashed down around her. The candle was a dead black stub. The herbs were ash. The bones had turned to dust. The graveyard soil was gone. Her Taco Bell bag lay limp and violated on the floor, one cinnamon twist crushed beneath the demonâs polished shoe print.
For a few seconds, she just stood there, breathing hard.
Then she picked up the empty Baja Blast cup.
The straw squeaked.
Y/N stared at it.
Her smile came back, shaky and wild, dragging itself across her face like a glitch. Her eyes filled, but the tears did not fall. They hovered there, hot and useless, while the room settled into its cheap, familiar shapes. Couch. Window. Rain. Radiator. Scorch mark shaped like Florida. Her life was the same, and it was completely ruined.Â
The word barely made it out before the panic hit.
She dropped to her knees in the middle of the dead ritual circle, hands braced against the chalk-stained floor, breath coming too fast. The apartment seemed to lean inward. The walls knew. The moon knew. Hell knew. Somewhere beneath her skin, something warm pulsed once, like a signature drying.
âFuck. Fuck. Fuck.â
Her phone buzzed.
Y/N flinched so hard she slapped a hand over her mouth.
For one insane second, she thought it would be Bruce. She thought the deal had worked anyway, that some loophole had cracked open, that her father would text Are you home safe? And the whole world would rearrange itself around those four words.
She crawled to the couch and grabbed her phone.
A notification glowed on the screen.
Y/N stared at it.
Then she started laughing.
It wasnât happy. It wasnât sane. It bubbled up through the wreckage of her like a curse wearing lip gloss, louder and wetter until she was laughing and crying at the same time, sitting in chalk dust with hellâs scorch mark on her floor and no Crunchwrap and a soul apparently on layaway.
Outside her door, in the hallway, a soft paper bag thumped against the mat.
Ice cream.
She had ordered ice cream.
Of course, she had.
Y/N wiped her face with both hands, stood on trembling legs, and walked to the door. She undid the chain. Opened it a crack.
The hallway was empty except for the delivery bag and a little plastic spoon tucked neatly into the receipt.
She picked it up.
On the receipt, beneath her order, someone had written in black ink:
See you next month. :)
Y/N stared at the smiley face.
Her own smile vanished.
Very slowly, she shut the door.
A/N: I am SOOOO excited about this!!!

House of Shadows: Chapter 1
Prologue [chapter 1 you are here] chapter 2 tbd
Your family didn't understand you.
You didn't even mean it in a teenager-emo "no one understands me" way; it was something several family members have said to your face.
"I don't understand you."
"Well, you wouldn't be the first!" you chirped, watching your little brother pout at you. Damian always tried to seem so grown up, but he was just a cutie patootie.
"How can someone like you come from Father?" he grunted. "You're a literal eyesore!" He gestured to your bright yellow outfit.
You tapped your chin, bouncing on your toes as you pretended to be deep in thought. "Well, someone like me doesn't have to let you petsit my sweet little Angel when I go out this weekend," you smirked. "I mean, she is my baby, so it would make sense you wouldn't like Angel, especially since she was raised by someone like me..."
"I didn't say that!" he huffed. "It's not her fault she was raised by a buffoon!"
He was such a tsundere.
"So you'll be able to watch her this weekend?" you pleaded.
"Of course I am. Angel should be around competent people every once in a while."
Tricking Damian to petsit:
Y/N: 30 Damian: 0
"Kay, thanks, Dami!" You turned back to your room. "Can't talk, got to get ready for school!" You slammed your door shut.
After putting your Gotham Prep uniform on, you slipped on yellow tights under your skirt, and you rolled up your blazer sleeves to have room for your various Kandi bracelets.
Once you made sure you were ready, you grabbed your car keys and skedaddled out.
As much as you loved Alfred's cooking, you did not want to be late to pick up Maya.
Following all the traffic laws (you definitely didn't ignore a stop sign or two), you swiftly made it to Maya's house. "Maya!" you shouted, running out of your car to rush to your girlfriend.
"I missed you so much!" Picking her up, you twirled around.
"You literally saw me yesterday afternoon," she rolled her eyes, but accepted the onslaught of kisses you gave her.
"It's been too long!" you gasped. "Even five minutes apart has my heart aching!"
"Just put me down so we aren't late," your girlfriend mumbled, her face now a bright shade of pink.
"As you wish!" You gently set her down and walked over to the passenger side of your car. "M'lady," you said, opening the door and bowing dramatically.
"You're still so corny," she giggled and stepped into the car.
Once in the car, you drove to school with the music blaring. You were the only one of the family left in high school since Tim dropped out last semester to run Bruce's Wayne Enterprises. It didn't make much difference whether he was here or not.
It's not like he talked to you.
"Y/N, Maya! Over here!" your friend group shouted. You bounced over there, practically tackling your smallest friend into a hug.
"Kyle! My sweet baby, how have you been? Did you eat breakfast this morning?" Kyle was a freshman, and he was only thirteen. He was so smart.
Even though you were only a sophomore, you ended up adopting a bunch of freshmen.
"Geez, tone it down, Y/N," Maya giggled. "You're not his actual mom."
You gasped dramatically. "Don't say that! I'll have you know I spawned Kyle with sheer willpower alone!" You clutched Kyle closer. "You may be his step-school mom, but you gotta step up more instead of leaving me to raise three and a half kids alone!"
"Yeah, you deadbeat," Jessica added, helping.
"Jessica, not helping," Maya sighed, struggling to hide a grin. "Will buying you and the kids breakfast make up for it?"
"Only if you buy me a milkshake!"
"Where am I gonna findânevermind, I'll figure it out."
~~~~~30 minutes later~~
You walked out of the cafe happily sipping on your milkshake, a giant breakfast burrito in your other hand.
"There goes my weekly spending money," Maya mourned her money that had been in her now-empty wallet just minutes ago. "You're buying lunch, right?" She looked up with puppy eyes. "And maybe for the rest of the week?"
"Well, I did offer to use the card," you smirked. "I suppose I can splurge a little this week," you said, as if you don't have a credit card with no limit.
"Kyle, catch!" You threw Kyle his own breakfast burrito and handed him a bag with a fruit bowl and a cake pop. "Now, you have to eat the fruit before eating that cake pop, understand?"
"Fine, Mom."
"I know you're being sarcastic, but I'm too happy to care." You resisted the urge to hug him so as to not smush his breakfast on him.
"Well, I better be heading to class. See you later, beautiful." Leaning down, you gave Maya a kiss goodbye.
"Bye!"
Leaving Maya and Kyle, you eventually just faded into the crowd of students, never to be seen again...
At least not until lunch.
After paying for Maya's lunch, you sat down at the table with your own tray of food. A giant burger with all the fixings, a tall glass of zesty cola with minimal ice, and a root beer float.
"I don't understand how you're so tall when all you eat is junk," grumbled Jessica as she ate her chicken cobb salad and milk to go with her cookies.
"What can I say? Genetics were just simply on my side. Can't say the same for Damian, though." Also, Alfred only gave you the most high-quality and nutritious food, but you weren't gonna say all that.
"How do you think I feel, with the way she's always picking me up, twirling me around like a doll who weighs nothing?" Maya pouted, getting more flustered by the second.
"Well, unlike the rest of us, you actually like feeling tiny and weak, Maya," Jessica teased. Maya's face burned a brighter red. "Plus, you're not that short, you just got a tall girlfriend."
"Well, you didn't have to call me out like that... how rude," Maya mumbled.
You admired your girlfriend as she and Jessica squabbled. God, she's perfect.
You suddenly remembered something. "Hey guys, unfortunately, I won't be able to make it to study night."
"What? Boo!"
"Calm down, Paul! It's just for tonight."
"That's way too long!" Paul whined. "Who's gonna reach the top shelves at the library now?"
"Wow, and here I thought you liked me for my stunning personality," you giggled with a toothy grin.
-------------------------------
"Here you go!" You handed the little boy a popsicle. "Don't overwork yourself or you'll get overheated."
"Ms. Flare, can I have two popsicles today?" You looked around, making sure no one was around before crouching in front of him.
"All right, here, but don't tell a soul. I can't have any of the other kids think I play favorites," you winked. He gasped and pulled you into a hug before running off with the two popsicles.
"Thanks, Ms. Flare!"
You went to check on the grill that you had set up in the middle of the courtyard. Sticking the thermometer into a piece of meat, you let out a groan of disappointment. "All right, guys, looks like we gotta wait a bit longer."
You heard the groans from the crowd.
"I know, guys, we just got to be patient."
"Thanks, Mrs. Westmond," you smiled at the older woman who handed you a big Tupperware of leftovers. "I'll make sure these get to your granddaughter!"
"Thank you, child. Now stay safe out there."
"Yes, ma'am!"
-------------------------------
You made the journey to the little girl's house. It was strangely quiet... usually, that meant something bad was about to happen. Maybe you were just being paranoid. You made it safely to the little girl's house, where you learned her name was Jasmine.
"Here you go, ma'am," you handed the boxes of food over to Jasmine's mom. "And I hope that you get well soon," you added with a smile directed towards Jasmine. "We wouldn't want you to miss another cookout now, would we?"
She shook her head with a silent giggle.
"Well, I best be going now." You made your way down the steps. "Gotta get back to my folks."
"You make it home safe, young lady. I don't want to read about your untimely demise in the papers."
"Wouldn't dream of it, mam."
Whistling a tune, you strolled down a random street near Crime Alley. You normally would take the bus, but you felt like you had to take the scenic route. So here you are, taking the long way home, whistling a tune as you go. It was so quiet until a piercing scream broke the night's silence.
"Let go of me!"
You ran towards the noise, not surprised that you found yourself headed straight towards Crime Alley. The pleas for help only got louder as you got closer. You didn't stop to take a breather until you could help this lady.
"Let go of me!" sniffled a tired young woman, struggling to escape the grasp of the man who slashed open her shirt.
"Hey!"
The man flinched at the sound of your voice. With him being caught off-guard, the woman tries to escape, but his grip tightened before she could break free from his grasp. His head violently snapped towards the interruption. His eyes locked onto you, his red, bloodshot eyes taking over your body, admiring the way your black and yellow outfit clung to your body.
You didn't blink. Your golden eyes narrowed with pure, unadulterated disgust.
"I know women are intoxicating," you said, your voice cold and dripping with venom, "but you look like a rabid dog. Back off."
The insult slapped him in the face, leaving him looking like he sucked a lemon. He shoved the terrified woman onto the wet pavement. He rummaged in his pocket for a moment before swiftly pulling out a large tactical knife. With a click, the blade was out. Now pointing it at you, he takes a menacing step forward.
You stayed still, expression going from disgust to a more serious look. In one smooth motion, your hand drops to your thigh holster.
Click.
The unmistakable sound of a gun's safety being clicked off echoed off the brick walls as you level the barrel right between his eyes.
The man freezes, staring down the barrel end of your pistol. He hesitates, knuckles turning white as his grip tightens on the handle of his knife, as he tries to decide if he has an opening to attack.
You don't give him the chance to look for any weaknesses. You already tried to give him a warning to back off. You don't hesitate. Before he can even twitch, your fingers squeeze the trigger, ending him on the spot
A/N: finally got this chapter out only took like over a week to write đ,it wasn't even as long as I thought it was tbh I think it's only a little longer than the prologue I think. Btw Y/N has a street persona (not a fleshed out vigilante atm) she goes by "Solar flare" the kids call her Ms.Flare. and the adults probably just call her Flare. The criminals do call her by the full name tho. Also I haven't come up with a breed for her dog but basically Angel is a massive giant scary looking dog that I'm pretty sure a dude would name her something like "Caine" or "killer" like her dog looks like she's gonna kill you at any second but she says sweetheart.
House of shadows: prologue.
âNo, Alfred.â
Bruce tossed the paternity papers onto the desk. He won't ruin another kid's life, not after what happened last time.
âBut Master Bruce, the girl's mother just died. She needs her fathââ
âNo!â Bruce interrupted with a shout. âI just lost my son not even a month ago!â His funeral was barely a week ago. âI refuse to take in another child.â
And so the child was sent to live with her uncle.
~~~~~~some time later~~~~
âNo, no, aughhhhhh!â
The pained yells of a thief broke the silence of the alley as Batman broke the man's hand that held a random lady's purse just moments ago.
Batman tied up all the thugs and left them there for the police to apprehend.
With that done, he headed his way back to the Batmobile to continue patrolling. He was not prepared for the sight of several small children surrounding his car.
Oh right⌠it was HalloweenâŚ
âDo you think it's real?â
âDuh! Who else has a car like that in this part of town?â
âOoh, let's see if there's anything cool in there!!â The same boy tried to open the door, but that only made a loud alarm blare through the alley.
Most of the kids ran away screaming.
Batman caught one by the cape before they could escape. âAnd where do you think you're going, Robin?â
The poor kid who was dressed up for Halloween trembled in his grasp. âBatman? Iââ
âYou know you're not supposed to be out on a night like this.â The sight of a plastic pumpkin filled with candy on the floor caught his eye.
âIf you wanted candy, you could have just asked me to buy you some.â Robin did always have issues when it came to asking him to buy stuff for him.
âBut Batman, I'm noââ He was cut off by Batman opening the car door and buckling him in.
âI'm sending you home.â
âMaya!â Robin shouted to a girl dressed up as Starfire. âSave my candy!â
The car drove itself away and Batman returned to patrol.
Alfred was quite surprised when he saw the Batmobile pull up into the cave this early; he figured Master Bruce would be out for several more hours.
âOh my!â Inside the vehicle was an angry-looking girl dressed up like Robin. She was currently banging on the window. Alfred quickly slipped on his own domino mask and made his way over to help the girl out.
She rushed out and shakily held up a batarang that she most likely got from the Batmobile. âWhy am I here!?â she shouted with a huff.
âNow, now, young Miss, no need to be alarmed.â Alfred gently disarmed the young girl before she hurt herself.
âI want my candy back,â she pouted. âBatman wouldn't exactly let me grab it before he kidnapped me.â
Alfred pinched his nose with a sigh. Of course Master Bruce had mistaken a random child for Robin.
He probably forgot Jason was dead with how tired he had been.
âAlright, young Miss, do you have an address I can escort you back to?â He paused. âPerhaps a guardian I can contact?â
âJust my uncle.â The girl lifted up her mask to rub at her eyes. Familiar blue eyes flared up at him.
Eyes that he sees everydayâŚ..
The girl was talking, but it was going in one ear and out the other. She looked so much like Bruce and yet not at all.
âSorry, Miss, can you repeat that once more?â Alfred quickly wrote it down.
âWould you like some candy?â Alfred grabbed the bowl meant for trick-or-treaters.
âYes, please!â she said with a toothy grin. âOooh! King-sized bars!!â She gasped. âI guess Batman is really rich after all!!!â she said, marveling at the giant candy bars.
âAh, yes. Giant candy points to him being rich, not the giant armored car,â he said dryly.
âNow, you better brush your teeth before bed, young lady,â he warned when she stuffed several handfuls of candy down her shirt.
âBatman owes me candy anyways,â the child grumbled as she grabbed another handful.
An alarm blared on the Batcomputer, interrupting them. He rushed to the computer; there had been a fear gas outbreak. âI'm afraid you can't go home quite yet, young Miss.â
âUgh!â
She situated herself on the floor to count her candy. At least she got something out of this.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Several hours later passed when the roads opened up. âBatman, I'm going to take the civilian you accidentally took home back to her place of residence, so I won't be here when you return.â
He grabbed the keys and inputted the coordinates into the GPS. He'd much rather use a civilian vehicle, but that would give up who he was.
It was a rather peaceful drive; the little girl ate her candy and occasionally asked questions about Batman.
âFor the last time, Batman is not a vampire.â
âOr that's what you want me to think!â
Alfred sighed and turned into the neighborhood.
âWell, that's an alarming amount of ambulances,â the girl noted.
âWait.â Horror filled her face. She quickly unbuckled her seatbelt and rushed out the open window, quickly recovering from her tumble to the ground. âDave!â she shouted, running in the direction of her house.
Cops tried to block her way, but she simply slid under their legs. âDave, where are you!â She ran into her house.
Her screams echoed through the neighborhood.
She stumbled out of the house, clutching her stomach. She quickly emptied the contents onto the floor below before collapsing to her knees. âDave,â she sniffled. âDad!â She never knew her dad, and Dave wasn't even her real uncle, but he was the closest thing she had to a father.
A blanket was put on her shoulders and she was gently ushered to a car by a police officer.
A few moments later, Alfred came up on the scene. âMy wordâŚ..!â Dave, the man who was taking care of the little girlâŚâŚ Bruce's daughter, was dead. It was as if the man had attempted to claw his own eyes out.
âExcuse me, have you seen a young child in a Robin costume? The one who lived with the victim?â
âHmm? Oh yeah, the Commissioner took her back to the station.â
Alfred thanked the man, ran back to the car, and headed back to the manor for his own car. Throwing off his mask, he rushed to the GCPD.
âMr. Gordon!â he shouted to get the Commissioner's attention. âWhere is she? Where is the child?â
Jim let out a loud sigh. âShe's in the questioning room being comforted.â He turned towards Alfred, looking confused as he flipped through the paperwork. âWhy are you here? I thought Bruce gave up his parental rights.â
âHe what?â
It had been several weeks since you were forced to live at this orphanage. The food was good, but the meaner kids liked to steal more portions.
This was the longest you've been separated from Maya. Her parents would have taken you in, but frankly, they couldn't afford to.
âY/N, you have a visitor.â
You honestly didn't want to be adopted.
âThere's someone here to take you to your father!â
That sounded even worse.
And that's how you became Y/N Wayne. (Pennyworth, but you don't need to know that).
A/N: sorry this is so bad đ
Never ending show.
Zombie stage Mizi! Neglected Reader X Yandere batfamily.
You were very little when you saw those people dancing on TV, their singing so beautiful and melodic... They captivated you completely. When you grew up, you wanted to be just like them. Idols. K-Pop idols
You told your older brother about that dream, and Dick just laughed and gently ruffled your hair, thinking you were very imaginative, perhaps... Too much.
You still remembered everything before it changed, your older brothers being there for you, helping you find cute outfits for kindergarten, styling your hair in little pigtails... Before Jason...
Remembering it brought tears to your eyes
Your brother had changed, he wasn't the same... He had died, he was in heaven, according to what Dick told you the last time you saw him before he disappeared too.
Now you had no one to listen to K-Pop with.
Alfred seemed drained; all the change had transformed him and almost disabled him, leaving him only cleaning and taking care of Bruce, forgetting about the other living person in the manor.
You.
You grew up teaching yourself to comb your hair, to always brush your teeth, and not to pick at the acne that appeared while being a teen.
In that process... You met her.
Sua.
A girl with long black hair, beautiful violet eyes, and skin as pale as the moon. She quickly became your friend. She taught you how to style your short hair better. Adjust your glasses to prevent your eyes from looking smaller... And paint your nails without getting polish on your fingers.
With her... You could forget how quiet Manor was when you arrived home from school, how you were unintentionally left out because there was more important things to do.
You knew they weren't doing it on purpose, they couldn't have been doing it on purpose! Right...?
They didn't even notice when you showed up with a bright red bruise on your face, but that's because they were too busy! They must be busier!
Slowly that empty house began to fill up when Tim arrived, you tried to talk to him... But he seemed to have his mind full of other, more important things.
Maybe you weren't lucky enough to have him talking to you about things you didn't understand... But that for some reason, your father, Bruce, did.
Then Dick came back. And with him, a couple of months later, came Stephanie.
But you simply didn't notice.
You were too busy entering small competitions with Sua to become idols!
Even though they had been rejected time and time again...
But you didn't lose hope!
You were so close to graduating when Jason reappeared. You were confused. Wasn't he... dead? It turned out your father had lied. Jason had been missing but not dead.
You were so flustered that you just turned away and didn't speak to them again until you graduated, and even though you invited them... none of them came.
Only Sua was there for you.
She comforted you when no one else was there for you, wrapped her soft, slender arms around your neck, and laughed along with you as you threw your graduation caps into the air.
You two decided to make one last attempt, and entered another idol audition.
Only you managed to get accepted.
Even as you were about to go on stage for your first performance, she was there for you, while the front-row seats reserved exclusively for your family grew cold... She simply took your hand and held it to her chest and kissing them while encouraging you to come up and sing.
You were so lucky to have her here for you...
It had been a success; your fanbase was growing slowly but successfully. It was a surprise; your company was starting to rake in the cash you were generating.
The advertisements on the streets began, cameras focused very low, outfits too loose enough to show underwear... Short, tight suits, sweat, shirtless men. It was... so tiring.
Photos and more photos.
Videos.
Your hair being slowly curled into ringlets, or maybe pulled into low ponytails. Short shorts with tight tops, water suddenly soaking you... But maybe on purpose?
Disgusting... But you couldn't do anything about it.
You wouldn't do anything.
Your outings with Sua slowly disappeared.
Your phone remained empty, even as posters of your appearance appeared on the streets of Gotham, showing familiar eyes, fair skin, and beads of sweat... And yet, no one in your family sent anything.
No messages.
No letters...
Nothing.
You were so tired...
...
You had finally managed to go out with Sua in the middle of your busy schedule, you were walking side by side near a park when she stopped, freezing when she saw you take out a cigarette and were about to light it
Her hand snapped up without thinking and stole it from your lips, beautiful violet eyes worried looking up at you.
You didn't say anything. Your face went blank for a second, the cap casting a small shadow on your face... When suddenly your hand rose and slapped her across the face.
She stood still, face turned to the side for a few seconds while you were about to turn around. She stopped you; you tried to pull away, and she wrapped her arms around your waist, burying her face in your shoulder while trembling slightly.
Your eyebrows slowly furrowed.
Tired... You were so tired...
You exploded, you broke free, taking steps backward, you yelled things at her while tears streamed down your face like fine, crystalline pearls.
You ran a hand over your face, your fingers pressing against your skin and intertwining with a few loose strands of hair that fell across your face, your breath catching in your throat...
You turned around and ran, rounding a bend and leaving her there all alone.
Silence filling the air...
Then the sound of something dragging.
Sua was frozen, watching as something slowly emerged from the darkness, dragging its feet, dark skin, and emitting a disgusting, rotten smell that made her eyes water. It growled as it followed you from behind without you noticing.
You were just so tired...
You just didn't even notice when-
The show that never ends
Since the apocalypse began, everything had changed too much; nothing was the same as it was a couple of years ago in Gotham. What at first seemed terrifying became commonplace, Part of the most infected city was sealed off behind barbed wire gates preventing zombies from escaping; some humans had managed to find something 'good' about it.
A long tent had been set up, and Hyuna walked slowly before accidentally bumping her shoulder into someone else's. Just as she was about to apologize, she stopped. Recognizing the person she had bumped into.
The Wayne family.
Billionaires who, even in the face of the apocalypse, perhaps only saw their money decrease by 10%. But they were never interested in such things.
But who was she to say anything? She wasn't very interested in this either.
But there was something to be done.
She turned around and entered the longest and brightest tent in the center, unaware of the eyes fixed on her back, watching her take every step.
Bruce stared, then slowly turned hus gaze to Dick and Jason beside me. "Any leads on her?" They both shook their heads slowly, their eyes scanning their surroundings.
You had been missing for a couple of hours, and they had barely noticed... How could they have let the only civilian in their family go missing for more than a couple of hours?
Bruce shook his head, trying to refocus his attention on what was important; you were most likely nearby.
You'd always liked pop music, and this place had exactly that. Maybe you'd come to see it?
Cassandra and Stephanie arrived and also shook their heads, nothing about you in the surroundings, Bruce sighed as he slowly stroked his temple with two fingers.
Maybe they should go in. You should be in the audience.
They all followed behind him like a troop, their clothes dark but of good quality, trying to blend in... Bruce kept his gaze fixed on the place where that woman had gone into.
Inside, the show had already started.
Cheerful music drifted from inside, men making sounds in unison in the background, Bruce walked before stopping.
he felt his body turn cold, pallor creeping across his face like a flower dying under so much sun, slowly withering away... His body trembled, his fingers clenching and his jaw tensing enough to pop.
Everyone else stopped, confused, before shifting their gaze to the center of the stage.
And freezing in the same way.
Itâs rare - itâs so rare, and it makes you so giddy that you feel like kicking your legs and squealing. For the first time ever - for the first time in the history of Snezhnaya, Teyvat and the entire universe, truly ever - Pantalone, the Ninth of the Eleven Fatui Harbingers, the Regrator, is staring at you quite speechless. What a wonderful actor he usually is, but right now, right now he cannot hide the oncoming headache that you almost had to deal with.
Itâs only a minor slip up, naturally it barely takes any time for Pantalone to collect himself once more and stop glaring at you. Though his hand still reaches for a cigarette, lights it up and takes a deep, deep, breath. He couldnât look more like a dragon about to turn you into ash if he tried.
âIs this truly necessary?â he asks, a businessman-like smile on his lips. Effective against many, not you.
âOf course,â you smile sweetly, âAs Dottoreâs greatest funder, a word about your thoughts about his latest success would be much appreciated and Iâm sure very comforting to the public.â
âCan you still say you have that right?â
Youâre distracted. Unprofessional - and that, in this case, means a danger to yourself.
It shouldnât be an issue, however. Considering how expressive Dottore is while going over the details of the experiment, itâs more of a passion project than one relevant to the Tsaritsaâs goals. No less important, but there will be less people included and that means less people who could ask you questions before you make sure to catch up later.Â
Itâs just hard to focus.Â
Cerulean blue runs over the papers on the table. The important looking titles blur together. His voice explains how all of them are connected, you should know it too - you do know it, simply not at the moment, thatâs all. But what you donât know is how those fingers would feel caressing your body. The contrast between the blue and your skin is an image that already sends shivers down your spine.Â
Finally, the beeping stabilises.
Yet you donât get the privilege of feeling relieved; Zandik is still dying. Heâs an old man, and as a mortal, that is the only fate awaiting him. No matter his efforts of achieving the contrary. Thereâs nothing you can do to change the laws of nature, but perhaps, in this moment, you made a small difference for the heretic who barely ever tasted kindness and warmth of genuine affection.
Oh, Zandik⌠You think, looking down at him, face partially obscured by the mask forcing oxygen into his lungs. Itâs nothing new, although usually the mask he wears makes him look powerful instead of the opposite. You smile wryly as you gently stroke his head.Â
âSatisfied?â a growl comes from behind you, too close for comfort, close enough that his breath fans the skin of your neck.
HOYO-MIX - Threefold Falsehood
On the chilly spring afternoon when your brother brings yet another doctor home, you sit propped against a fortress of pillows and watch the snow erase the city.
It should be warmer right now, you think. Somewhere, in gentler nations, the earth is softening, so girls can step into streets in lighter dresses, lifting their faces to the rain, laughing because the world is thawing.Â
Here, in Snezhnaya, the sky remains a hard sheet of iron, and you watch the eternal white burying the streets. It covers the chimneys first, then the roofs, then the crooked railings along the pathway. It erases footsteps almost as soon as people leave them.Â
You have often thought that Snezhnaya is merciful in that one respect: it knows how to cover evidence. Poverty, blood, shame, sickness, all of it can be made briefly beautiful beneath fresh snow.
Your room, however, refuses to be transformed. Illness has made it too intimate for beauty. The curtains are clean, the blankets are warm, and the grate is full of black coal. There are glass bottles on the small table by your bed, brown and green and clear, with labels written in many different hands. There are also a spoon darkened by tinctures, a folded cloth smelling faintly of vinegar, and a book of Snezhnayan fairy tales with the spine broken from being held open for too long.
Everything is cared for and paid for, albeit useless.
Same with doctors who come here to cure you, unfortunately. From Snezhnaya to Fontaine, from provincial bone setters to court-trained men with rings on their hands, every physician has stood beside your bed and failed you with politeness. Recently, youâd started dismissing them before they could unload their useless comforts upon you, waving a tired hand and turning your face to the wall. It was better to be alone with the truth than to be smothered in a weak promise of a false spring. Â
Still, even given your condition, youâve continued living with the stubbornness of a weed between stones.
Stubbornness, yes. Itâs the right word, more spiteful than hope. The latter had left you some time ago, probably during the first winter when you had to be carried from the bed to the chair and back again like a broken doll.Â
So stubborn it was.Â
And love.
If you were alone, perhaps you couldâve slipped away easily. You mightâve closed your eyes and thought, "Enoughâ. If no one would come home smelling of snow, ink, and other peopleâs money, only to pause outside your door and gather himself before entering, you wouldâve drawn your final breath long ago.
But your little brother is still here, and youâve always protected him to the best of your ability, even if from your own demise.Â
In childhood, when the roof leaked and the food ran out, you gave him your share and told him youâd already eaten. Other children could be comforted by these lies, but not your brother. Even then, he looked at you with those clever eyes of his and chewed on black bread reluctantly, while you turned your face away.
Now heâs a completely different person, your Feofan. Mr. Veksel, a rising financier with a smile that unnerves the most. He disappears for days, sometimes weeks, swallowed by ledgers, negotiations, bank halls, and private meetings. Yet when he comes to your bedside, heâs still your little brother, who believes, with a childâs hope toward fate, that if he pays enough, something in the world must yield and allow you to step out of this house in a beautiful spring dress.
You hate to fail him every time.
