I AM ACTIVELY THROTTLING YOU!!! WITH LOVE!!!!!!!
ahhhh you!!! i know we already spoke at length in dms,,, but i need to yell in public too!!! i'll get to my main question soon BUT some praise is in order first :3
as stated before, I LOVEEE ORPHIC MC!!! they are so blorbo. overthinking icon. i want to lay their head on my chest and coo at them for hours and bite their cheek and kabedon them while anaxa watches,,, i mean what. who said that. haha. ANYWAYS i love the growing path they've been on this whole story 🥹 genuinely makes me so emotional they can't see me but i am their biggest supporter!!! besides maybe kira HOWEVER whenever they are doing something important i am screaming and cheering and crying they have no idea how much i care them,,,,,!!
and now for my question: where did you come up with all these equations and ideas from⁉️⁉️⁉️ i know anaxa has had his own talks of souls and the like in game but i wanted to know if you came up with all these philosophical ideas yourself or if they already existed and you are simply flexing your Giant Smart Brain at us by explaining them in such a way i can grasp them super easily,,,
I'M CRYING AT THE FIRST SENTENCE 😭😭😭
please never let MC hear the part about wanting to kabedon them while anaxa watches because i genuinely think they'd just evaporate on the spot.
and thank you so much 😭🤍 i have such a soft spot for them. i know they spend most of the story overthinking absolutely everything, but i think that's exactly why i love writing them. they're someone who desperately wants to understand the world before acting in it, and unfortunately for them, they met the one person whose existence completely dismantles the framework they use to understand anything. so watching them slowly rebuild themselves has become one of my favourite parts of orphic!!!
as for your question!! it's honestly... a mix of everything.
none of the theories are copied from a single philosopher or paper. they're all original constructions, but they're built from ideas that already exist in philosophy, mathematics, computer science, neuroscience, systems theory and cognitive science. i spend an embarrassing amount of time reading things and then asking myself, "okay... what happens if i push this idea much, much further?"
so, for example, i'll borrow a concept like recursion from mathematics, information from computer science, emergence from systems theory, continuity from philosophy, then mash them together until they become something that can stand on its ow.
the equations work in a similar way. i don't start with the maths and then force a philosophy onto it. i usually start with a philosophical claim, like "your experiences change not just who you are, but how you'll change in the future"—and then ask myself, "if this were a formal system, what would it actually look like?" if i can't express it coherently, then i probably haven't understood the idea well enough yet.
which is also why the document for this fic is... horrifyingly large. 😭 there are pages and pages of theories, revisions, diagrams and equations that never even make it into the story because i need to know they hold together before i let a character argue for them.
and bruh. man. i don't think of myself as particularly smart 😭 if i find an idea interesting, i will happily spend weeks pulling it apart, looking for contradictions, rebuilding it, breaking it again and repeating the cycle until it finally feels internally consistent THAT IS ALL oh my god i am such a tryhard </3
that's actually where anaxagoras came from, in a way!! i needed someone who could ruthlessly expose every hidden assumption in another person's theory. unfortunately that means every time i think i've built something airtight, i have to sit there and ask, "okay... how would anaxa destroy this?"
so if anything, writing orphic has felt less like showing off and more like accidentally giving myself homework that never ends. (i dont complete my actual homework in uni but here i am giving mySELF homework-)
(and i'm so happy the explanations feel accessible 😭 that is genuinely one of the biggest compliments i could receive, because my goal has never been to make the theories sound impossibly clever, it was to make them feel like something anyone could follow if they were willing to think alongside the characters </3)
you have NO IDEA how delighted i was to receive a notif from you!! it’s been a while!! i actually haven’t read the newest chapter i just wanted to drop in first and tell you i was excited to hear from you again lol
- 🌻
SUNFLOWER. It has been ages since i last saw you. Im so happy to see you here!!
Did you read it yet !?!?! And the newest chapter too !! I am looking forward to hearing everything that went down w u in the time we havent spoken !! How have u been !!
just popping in to say hello 👋
-🍮
HAIIIIII PUDDINGGGG OH MY GOD !!!! How are uuuuu today :P
answering a couple more asks 2dayyy maybe in one-two hours!! i just read everything in my inbox (im in uni… balls of steel god forbid somebody saw my tumblr @ please protect me lord) i love you ALLLLL so much

Came across another post that talked about reader inserts needing to be a blank slate. So after blocking said user I have things to think about and say hmm.
It's mostly based on how, no matter what you try, you will inevitable never be able to make a reader insert who is a perfectly blank slate.
Most longer oneshots and chaptered fics will contain reader inserts with personalities. Most drabbles with dialogue will include reader inserts with personalities.
You can try stripping said reader insert down to the barest minimum, give them the vaguest traits but like...there's always going to be something. Something that will indicate a personality or a tell.
Even character pov posts with no descriptors of the reader save for a blank presence will indicate a personality. It's always going to be in the way the character interacts with you. It's how life works, the way people will hold back or show certain traits that you are wholly comfortable with, if they respect you enough. Some readers may not like being touched on the face or interacted with a certain way. You can't really escape that characterization hole unfortunately.
But I think, a lot of what is wiped clean, is an author's touch to it. Bits of their own experiences thrown into the reader. A cultural practice, a quirk, a manner of speaking, a passing experience, a want for something, a self indulgent fantasy, a need to tell a silly story. I don't think they are any less valid tbh.
The blank slate argument is a rather silly statement in the end to really decribe what abreader insert SHOULD be. The vaguer reader inserts are a valid part of the Fandom. But I don't think excluding ones with personalities should be disparged either. Otherwise the number of longer fics will be relegated to character x character spaces or character x oc spaces...genres, I think, that a lot of people may not be openly ready to read. So just tag what you can well and read what you enjoy!
Why does this argument keep coming up.
A perfectly blank reader insert sounds straightforward in theory, but the moment a character exists in a story, they begin accumulating meaning. A protagonist doesn't become characterized only when you give them a name, appearance, or tragic backstory. They become characterized the moment they make a choice, respond to someone, hesitate, laugh, stay silent, forgive, get annoyed, or simply tolerate something another person wouldn't. Even the absence of reaction communicates something.
The longer a story is, the more unavoidable this becomes. Narrative is built on causality. Why does the protagonist make this decision instead of another? Why do they stay? Why do they leave? Every answer, explicit or implicit, says something about who they are.
In that sense, I think the pursuit of a completely blank slate is trying to achieve something that storytelling itself resists. Stories are acts of creation, and creation inevitably produces something. The question isn't whether a reader insert has a personality, but how much personality they have and how much room remains for the reader to project themselves into it.
I think it's more useful to think of reader inserts as an interface that invites the reader to project themselves onto a fictional consciousness. Some authors leave that interface very open. Others characterize it more heavily while still writing in second person. Their humor, worldview, cultural assumptions, conversational rhythms, and emotional priorities inevitably seep into the narration because no writer creates from a vacuum. It exists on a spectrum. Some maximize projection, others maximize immersion. That's all there is to it.

It was, Anaxagoras had long since concluded, the least interesting part of any symposium.

So, he remained where he was.
The stone pillar at his side offered little comfort, but he had never understood why so many people insisted upon sitting through an entire day of presentations when standing afforded a clearer view of both the speaker and the audience. Today, however, he had observed very little.
His attention had remained fixed almost entirely upon the board.
It still was.

editing this is taking longer than expected. this chapter is a toughie 🥲🥲🥲
Also… before i go to bed… for the LADS girlies, valko release being cancelled is genuinely one of the worst decisions ive ever seen a company make and i dont take these things very lightly at all. and to be honest, more than worrying about the community being denied of a character, i feel sorry and so deeply disappointed for the developers who have poured their all for 2.5 years (or more) into making this character. as someone pursuing game design and animation myself, nothing pisses me off more than quite literally pouring somebody’s work down the drain. obviously irritated because of such a decision. i stopped playing and unfollowed their socmeds, i want no part of this game, but i still want to engage with the community!! i will be reposting valko artwork and fics with a PASSION when i find the time to 🥹
Current wc of the upcoming chapterrrr! Going to bed now and hoping i dream of anaxa because i NEED more anaxa inspo so bad ugh
i cannot believe its been over the year(?? not sure) with this fic and here i am, waiting for the new chapter as eagerly as for the first chapter after the announcement<3
“Well, if it was ending, you’d be the first person I’d call.” OH MY HEARTTT
I LOVE THEM SO SO MUCH
“…Glad I called the wrong number.” screaming again!
wow felt a panic myself to present. you always write in such a immersive way. makes it feel real.
okayyyy and i got literal chills over presentation. what a writer u are damnn.
insane chapter. so much work and dedication. i am really glad you are here and chose to write this for us
i am so tired u wont believe it but your energy is so fucking incredible and you are about to receive the WARMEST most PERSONAL reply of all time bestie.
bc oh my goodness 😭🤍
i genuinely can't believe it's been over a year either it somehow feels like both five minutes and a lifetime ago!! And thank you so much for sticking with orphic for this long. knowing there are still people who get just as excited for new chapters now as they did back then is honestly one of the biggest motivations i have to keep writing :”)
that chapter was probably one of the most challenging i've written because i wanted it to feel like you were both the reader, AND an attendee in that auditorium, equal parts fascinated, overwhelmed and just a little terrified.
reading comments like this honestly makes all the hours of outlining, rewriting and research feel worth it <3 so thank you!!!! i'm really glad you're here experiencing this story with me
I am #1 ilias fan. I love him he is everything to me. My baby my child hes the reason orphic is still ongoing idc idc hes so HES SO hes so
A question which came to mind after reading the latest 'orphic' chapter -- out of interest, what do you personally make of the reader's conclusions about identity? Like, clearly you've put tons of thought into articulating it, and has that influenced your own views about identity and its nature in any way? Does it reflect a pre-existing view you had which you've now articulated in the fic? Or are you purely entertaining the idea for the sake of the fic (which is honestly incredibly valid)? Or is it a bit of a mix?
Would love to hear your thoughts in any case! Once again bravo because your writing is genuinely causing me to undergo transformations as I read it which will no doubt affect the way I receive all future transformations (/hj)
this is such a lovely question. and it warrants a LONG answer. Bear with meeeeeeeeee
the honest answer is... probably somewhere in the middle.
i've always loved discussing philosophy, especially when two people can start from completely different assumptions and still arrive at coherent conclusions. i never really wanted orphic to have a single "correct" philosophy, it was much more interesting to me if every major character could genuinely defend their position. I was trying to build a world where intelligent people could disagree with one another without one side secretly being "the author's opinion." i wanted every major theory to be something i could argue for sincerely.
that said, i don't think you can spend this much time thinking about a question without it changing the way you see it! the reader's theory definitely isn't a one-to-one reflection of my own beliefs, but it's probably the one i've found myself sympathising with the most over time. not because i think it's correct (i don't think questions like these have neat answers), but because i find it captures something about lived experience that i struggle to explain otherwise. but i don't think experiences are the only thing that make up identity. my own views are a lot messier than that and are influenced by religion, upbringing, culture, literature, emotions and a lot of other factors (or personal beliefs) that are difficult to separate from one another, i suppose this is where i differ from mc :P
i've always been fascinated by the idea that we don't simply accumulate experiences, we're altered by them in ways that change how every future experience is interpreted. grief changes the way joy feels. love changes the way loneliness feels. failure changes the meaning of success. in that sense, you aren't just adding chapters to a book; the entire language the book is written in is quietly changing as you read it.
that's the intuition the reader starts from.
what surprised me most, though, was writing anaxagoras.
because i expected him to be the "opposing viewpoint," but somewhere along the way i realised that he asks questions i genuinely don't have satisfying answers to. if two people are behaviourally identical, remember the same things, make the same decisions and tell the same story about themselves... what exactly is missing? if i insist they're different, what am i actually pointing to?
i don't think he's right. but i also don't think he's easy to dismiss. a lot of the reader's later work exists because he exposes places where their original theory relied on intuition rather than arguments… and forcing myself to construct arguments that could dismantle the reader's worldview meant i had to interrogate my own assumptions too. there were so many moments where i'd think, "well obviously this is true," and then realise... i couldn't actually justify why.
so i suppose orphic has become less about proving a philosophy and more about stress-testing one. every time i think i've built an airtight idea, another character comes along and breaks it from an angle i hadn't considered. then i have to rebuild it. and then someone else breaks that. honestly, writing this fic has felt less like inventing a theory and more like accidentally enrolling myself in a philosophy degree LMAO
if there's one thing i have taken away personally, it's that i've become much more suspicious of simple definitions of identity. i don't think we're reducible to our memories, or our personalities, or our bodies, or our relationships alone. but i also don't think there's a tiny immutable "true self" hidden underneath everything else. whatever identity is, i suspect it's stranger, and much more dynamic, than we tend to imagine. i think every major theory in the fic has changed me a little simple because i had to inhabit it long enough to make it convincing.
and thank you so much for the kind words 😭 the fact that people are thinking this deeply about the ideas is honestly one of the most rewarding parts of writing the story. and if reading orphic has transformed the way you receive future transformations, then i suppose the recursion is working exactly as intended 🤍

eating dinner after parking in the stickiest spot with level 999 difficulty. thinking about how anaxa wouldve parked here… or maybe he would just tell you that a restaurant with no parking is a waste of your time and his money 😌
I’m not sure if you’re still active and/ or still working on ‘Orphic’ but I just needed to let you know that reading the first ten chapters has rewired my brain chemistry and that the way you write Anaxa is SO peak. Plus his dynamic with the reader. And the reader’s dynamic witn your OCs. And the writing style of the fic. And the amount of background work that’s gone into building legitimate foundations for the characters’ theories. And—
oh my god 😭
this genuinely made my day. thank you so, so much.
i'm absolutely still working on orphic!!! it's just one of those stories that's grown far larger than i ever expected, so a lot of the time i'm buried in research, theory documents, timelines, and revisions before i even get to writing the actual chapters.
hearing that you noticed the foundations behind the theories means more than i can really put into words. i spent an embarrassing amount of time making sure everyone wasn't just sounding intelligent, but that each character genuinely has a coherent philosophical framework they believe in. i wanted their debates to feel like real academic disagreements where nobody is obviously right, just operating from fundamentally different assumptions.
and i'm especially happy you mentioned anaxagoras. he's probably the most difficult character i've ever written because i wanted him to feel brilliant in a way that isn't just "he knows a lot of big words." he needs to be the kind of person who can completely change the way someone thinks simply by reframing the question.
the reader's relationships with everyone else are honestly my favourite part of the story. as much as orphic is about philosophy and metaphysics, it's also about watching those ideas become deeply, painfully personal and people changing one another, for better or worse. Tbh messages like this remind me why i keep coming back to this project, even when it feels impossibly ambitious. i'm really glad you've been enjoying it, and i hope the rest of the journey lives up to the first ten chapters
