I’m posting these out of order because they follow a vague chronological path in my brain but I hope you enjoy
Hanzo shivered slightly as a cold march breeze blew past his hotel balcony. He watched the crowded, narrow french streets as the sky glowed blue and gold. He leaned against the railing and examined the streets below him. He didn't believe Reaper would just happen to show up at the hotel, no matter how many Overwatch agents stayed at it or how many nearby sightings there had been. But he was bored and the sunset was beautiful. He might as well enjoy the sunset before he had to patrol.
As the sun continued setting, the streets became quieter until they were almost barren. The sky faded to lavender and a deep, dusky blue and the gothic style hard-light lamps flickered on. Hanzo stood, ready to find something else to do for a few more hours, when a flash of movement caught his eye. He watched a hunched figure dart between buildings, head swiveling with paranoid watchfulness. He watched out of sheer boredom for a moment, then tense when the figure turned toward him, revealing golden eyes and blue skin. If she was in the same area Reaper had been reported in, something was definitely up. He took a few steps back into his hotel room and grabbed his bow from behind the dresser and his comm from on top.
"I just saw Widowmaker outside, on Rue Gallieni," He said to his team.
"Shit, really? I thought we'd just be dealing with Reaper." Lucio replied.
"So did I. You sure it was her?" McCree asked.
"Positive," Hanzo replied, biting back a sarcastic comment. "She was heading east. What do we do?"
"Keep track of her, but don't get close. Don't take any risks, she could be trying to lead you to an ambush. Genji, Lucio, and I will follow you and help you take her down and Zarya and Mei will stay behind unless we need reinforcements.”
"Understood," Hanzo said. He stepped on the balcony railing and climbed up to the roof, keeping away from the lit windows. He ran eastward, simultaneously analyzing the safest and most discreet route and scanning the area for another glimpse of Widowmaker. He caught sight of her as she darted down a narrow alleyway. He followed suit, jumping down to a lower roof as he examined the alley.
"We're about to head out," Genji said softly over the comm. "Do you have Widowmaker's location?"
"She ran into an alley by Defleur Boulevard. I'm going to get closer to her now." He said.
"Be careful," Genji warned. "We will be there soon." Hanzo nodded, mostly to himself, as the comm went quiet and continued looking at the alley.
The alley led to a maze of other alleys and sidestreets. Some of the buildings were crammed so close together Hanzo couldn't get a good look into them. He dropped lightly from the roof and pulled a sonic arrow from his quiver and fired it at the ground in front of him. He listened as a chime echoed against the nearby walls and eventually Widowmaker herself. Hanzo nocked an arrow and crept toward her, bow half drawn.
He swung around the corner and pointed his bow at her. At the same time, she pointed her assault rifle at him. They froze together, staring at each other, just a twitch away from death.
Widowmaker looked vastly different from the last time Hanzo had seen her. Then, she had been perfectly composed, her eyes cold, and a smug smirk on her face. Now, her eyes burned with fear and anger, her thick black hair was pulled into a bun with wispy strands falling out on all sides, and even the baggy sweatshirt and ragged jeans couldn't hide how much thinner she looked. She and Hanzo stared at each other for a few more moments before Hanzo felt the barrel of a gun press against his head. Hanzo glanced slowly to the side and saw Reaper's clawed hand holding the shotgun firmly to his head. His masked face slowly turned toward Hanzo.
"I'll drop mine if you drop yours," He rasped. Hanzo's eyes flickered between the two of them, trying to decipher what they were planning. He complied and dropped his bow slowly on the ground. Reaper nodded and he and Widowmaker both dropped their weapons. Widowmaker crouched at the end of the dead end, looking guarded. Reaper stood in front of Hanzo, arms crossed, silently until Hanzo broke the silence.
"Why what?" Reaper replied.
"Why did you bother luring me into an ambush if you weren't going to kill me?" He continued. Reaper and Widowmaker shared an unreadable look before looking back at him.
"Because I need your help," Widowmaker replied. Hanzo looked at her, confused and surprised. "I need to get away from Talon. I thought Overwatch would be my best chance."
"Why Overwatch? You don't exactly have a good relationship with them, what makes you think they're any safer?" Hanzo pressed. Widowmaker looked him straight in the eye, her golden eyes full of desperation.
"Overwatch may punish me for what I've done, but Talon has done much worse to me. If I stay, I will definitely die." She said.
"I don't like it," Reaper spat. "But Overwatch is the only real chance she has. Anyone else would kill her, no questions asked, if they didn't experiment on her first."
"Hanzo!" Genji called softly over the comm. " Where are you? Are you okay?" Hanzo glanced at Reaper, who only nodded. He reached for his comm slowly and answered.
"I'm in an alleyway off of Rue de L'Ailes," There was a faint triumphant sound that was quickly hushed by someone else. "I have Widowmaker with me."
"You caught her? By yourself?" Lucio exclaimed.
"I distinctly remember saying not to take any risks." McCree said. "Have you seen Reaper?”
"Good. We'll be there in three minutes. Hang tight." McCree replied before the comm went silent. Reaper nodded and began to walk past Hanzo. He stopped for a moment and laid a hand on his shoulder.
"Don't let Ziegler do anything screwy to her," He said before he disipated into a plume of smoke and drifted away. After he disappeared, Hanzo slowly picked his bow back up and slung his quiver on his back. He glanced at Widowmaker, who was still crouched at the end of the alleyway.
"Why come to me?" He asked. She smiled.
"Because I know you're easy to bait." She said.
Less than a minute later, Hanzo heard the sound of footsteps hurrying down the street. McCree peered around the corner, pistol at the ready. Genji stood beside him, shuriken in hand and Lucio stood behind the two of them, relaxing music emanating from him. They lowered their weapons when they saw she was unarmed, but remained wary.
"I found her here," Hanzo told them. "She said she has defected from Talon and needs help." McCree tilted his head and looked at her, as if trying to determine the truthfulness of her statement. Lucio looked from Widowmaker to McCree, disbelievingly.
"You don't seriously believe her, do you?" He asked.
"Not necessarily, but everyone deserves a second chance. Even so, I'm afraid I'll have to restrain you. You understand." He said as he pulled a rope from his belt.
"Do you carry that around all the time?" Genji asked.
"It's useful and fun to play with, of course I do." McCree said as he checked the ropes and began to lead her back to the hotel. Genji called Zarya and Mei to let them know the situation and tell them to contact Winston to retrieve them. Hanzo couldn't help but notice how Widowmaker seemed to relax as soon as she was surrounded by the other Overwatch agents, like she had suddenly found somewhere safe.
