Google Books cycles out whatever they have available so sometimes I'll check again for mentions of Dean.
Some tidbits:
(from a book about werewolf movies): Donald Sutherland, George Hamilton and Gene Wilder were all considered for the lead in Werewolf of Washington. Sutherland was interested, but his girlfriend at the time, Jane Fonda, saw the director's previous movie (Coming Apart) being screened for him, and was like, "This is sexist. You can't do this movie." So he turned it down. The review in this book also calls out Dean for acting too much like a dog in the movie. I figured Dean took inspiration from the dog he owned at the time anyway.
(from ArtNews) 2006 review of Dean's exhibit at the Gerald Peters gallery. Sassies has another article about it, but I'll have to see if I can find this somewhere else. The snippet I can get reads, "Dean Stockwell's approach to photo-montage proved uneven. The 28 collages dating from the past four years demonstrated the ease with which artists working in this medium can slip from powerful communication into heavy-handedness."
Excerpt from Paul Ruscha's Full Moon- he talks about his brother bringing him to Topanga Canyon and meeting Dean, Russ and Dennis. I wanted to read what he had to say about Dean (he was intimidated by Dennis) but this book isn't online anywhere (except here which is weird) or easily available in libraries. I did find George Herms' Prometheus Archives though.
Went ahead and got Full Moon. Paul Ruscha talks about the different artwork he has in his collection and his connection with the artists.
For George Herms' artwork, he talks about Dennis Hopper, Dean Stockwell and Russ Tamblyn first, which seems unusual compared to most of the other entries. He usually talks about meeting the artist and his experiences with them, so it's interesting he also included Herms' friends in this. About Dean, Ruscha said he was a "quiet, smart and interesting man." He also went on a tangent about how people assume an actor's personality by the roles they take, how that's bullshit and how he shouldn't be curious about their private lives.
Ruscha met Herms a few times- in Topanga Canyon, at Herms' wedding and at one of Herms' various raffles.
Raffles? Well, I also got Herms' book The Prometheus Archives from the library, and in the chronology, it mentions he'd do raffles of his artwork once in a while to raise money. One in particular was called a "Roofle," and it was to raise money to fix his roof. The one Ruscha attended was to help them cover moving costs after dealing with rent increases.
Reading this chronology, Herms strikes me as someone who faced two paths at one point in time- one where he was a successful engineer and leader in his community and another where he solely focused on artwork. He took the latter path, but bits of the former path still show up in his life, like his listing PTA president on his chronology for example.
Some of his artwork is pictured in the book, including a zodiac series, and figures, Dean owned the Pisces one from this series. Dean lent his Herms artwork to this exhibit, but wouldn't allow any photographs of it into the book. This fits with his philosophy towards art- he thought people should only see art in person and not in books.

Dean Stockwell in The Careless Years, 1957 Director: Arthur Hiller
Was looking up Toni Basil and found more pictures of them, at two different events in 1975 and 1976 (one for a Eugene O'Neill tribute).
Toni must've used that dress a lot for events, there's another picture of her and Dean where she's wearing that dress. Also that's a very Al look on Dean in the second one.

How did that marriage function. sorry honey I have to go merge neurons and mesons with the freaky guy I met beating up the vending machine?? yeah he's my guardian angel?? what??
Dean Stockwell collage from the estate of David Lynch
Why Al alwwww be leanin into Sam after a punchline he like "My joke was so funny haha Sam doesn't it just make you want to kiss me on the lips?"
one of the funniest things about quantum leap is that on their super secret high tech experimental government time travel project al is allowed to smoke wherever he wants. just in the imaging chamber 8-16 hours a day no ashtray no nothing just sucking on that cigar. i guess you can do whatever you want when your brain waves are synced to the guy lost in time and your dna is in the computer that runs the whole joint

Found that Al Hirschfeld's estate has a bunch of his work online. They don't have everything, since I couldn't find the one from Compulsion I remember seeing when I was doing newspaper research. Tried finding it again on my Tumblr and nada :( But yeah if Hirschfeld made a caricature of you back in the day, you'd made it. Didn't realize he made that poster for Mighty McGurk too!
Top: Kim Middle: "They Who Get Slapped" (men who get slapped by women or a man hitting a woman in various plays, including: Look Back in Anger, Compulsion, Fair Game, Look Homeward Angel, and Rope Dancers.) This is most likely for Dean's role in Compulsion, meaning that's Ina Balin with him. Interesting he seems to be drawn differently here than in the other caricature I saw, though. He was drawn more like Lurch in the other one.
Also, even in caricature, Harry looks like Dean's father:
(from "Marinka," 1945 play he was in)
Something on my mind lately: Dean at political events.
Top row: Dean at fundraiser for Lisa Specht, put on by Don Henley (founded the band Eagles). Oh look there's yet another musician connection. Then Dean with Joy at a rally for Bill Clinton in '92.
Bottom row: Dean wearing a Dukakis button plus him at a Dukakis event. Dukakis was the Democratic opponent to George H. W. Bush.
In his poem, Jack Hirschman said Dean was so angry about Reagan. I doubt Dean liked any successors to Reagan either.
I’m still dying at how gay Camikazi Kid is.
To recap:
• a bunch of guys strip down a guy, who isn’t wearing underwear, and then throw him into a dumpster. Except for the dumpster, this sounds like the beginning of a gay orgy porno.
• Al walks in while Sam is getting stripped down and watched him get thrown into the dumpster.
• Al also watches Sam, who at this point is naked except for socks, get dressed again.
• At the end, Sam and Al sing along to a romantic song on the radio, the same one that’s playing when Sam kisses Jill.
• Sam has to look to Al for permission- twice -to kiss the girl.
And Al is plenty bisexual in this episode too, with his commenting on lingerie and the hot girl to go with his hot rod.
And on top of that, this was in the script:
Categories of Quantum Leap episodes:
Well-intentioned social commentary that (usually) hits the mark
Sam having the worst day of his life
Another piece of Al's backstory is revealed; makes him sadder
The writers remembered that Scott Bakula can sing and dance
Sam suddenly finds himself in the midst of a family drama
Random historical figure appearance
Sam is dropped into the most second-hand embarrassment producing situation you've ever seen
I hope this doesn't awaken anything in me (Scott Bakula in drag episodes)
The Spooky Episode (one per season)
Most ace person on the planet Sam Beckett forced to have romantic tension with someone he initially despises
TW: smoking
Some gifs from Checkmate episode S01E03 "The Cyanide Touch". Dean Stockwell plays an extremely intelligent but cocky college student determined to get to the bottom of a classmate's death. His 'the end justifies the means' attitude has Don, Jed, and Dr. Hyatt concerned he'll take things too far.

I guess that's why Al is always called The Observer in scripts...
Rewatching I-Man as part of a project to rewatch all of the DVDs I own, and yeah, I can easily see why this wasn't picked up for a series. The writing is just bad (and so is the acting but that's more fixable), and a superhero whose only power is being able to regenerate doesn't seem that appealing. Unless they planned to put him in more of a spy role?
But yeah, his body absorbing things instead of rejecting them seems like it would've made an interesting episode further down the road. Too bad.
