This is a rough-faced congregation, rugged-browed, boney-snouted, jagged as pinecones at the base of the skull. When they gather, craggy scales and scutes rubbing like chapped lip kisses, they honk and murmur, preen and snort, longing for warmth and communion in numbers. They have names—unshared—sounds each has designated as meaning his or her self. They stole these from the breeze and the creek and the flit of a pterosaur’s wing, sounds they cannot pronounce, but keep in their heads as evidence of existence: Fulth, Hesk, Loro, Ala, Minth, Jore, and Tulsk.
