DN Fic Rec: The Body
Author: louderandlouder Pairing: L/OC Status: Complete [ao3] summary: A post-series L story which follows his life and development over twenty years of post-Kira fallout, intercontinental crimefighting, prickly OC romance, illness, Russia, America, and eventually karaoke. The setting involves several resurrections. It is otherwise not an AU, or only a very slight one. Light shows up several chapters after you give up on him; B soon after.
RECOMMENDED FOR: Quality writing, depth, subtlety, length, realism.
Something of note: the author is writing original novels. (I don't know about you, but I find it heartening when a fanfic writer goes/tries to go pro.)
As a general rule, I avoid works with OC pairings. Ninety-nine per cent of them are self-indulgent and written lazily. This is fortunately a rare example of an original character pulled off well.Â
I've yet to read a fic that conveys the deterioration of aging as effectively as The Body. It's certainly not something fandom ever examines. We're a springtime culture. Our protagonists are young and radiant and invincible. Death Note is a shounen series, and Shounen Jump's adage of friendship, effort, and victory hinges on the fiery pluck of not knowing the world's grind. There's no accounting for burn out because to be old is to be busted, and to be busted is to be dull. Mundane has become a cuss.
The Body is wonderful at being slow. It's harder than it looks, but you're carefully drawn into a world where the great L is alive, yes, but his resurrection is not met with shouts of joy from the world. From L, there is no steely resolve to be personified Justice. He does what he knows, and what he knows is casework.Â
From there the story goes off, following L over the decades. There's the aches of getting older.  Russia crumbles. Yuriy is the youngest of an aged family. L has diabetes. He gets sick. His back hurts. They watch old TV shows and don't find the Mighty Boosh funny at all. L loses touch with Watari. No bond is eternal in The Body. Everything fades, and everyone is fallible.Â
There's no great sweeping statement of adoration between Yuriy and L. They even get separated over the course of years, with Yuriy working under Near. They are in love but there is none of the swamping of declarations of undying devotion we've come to expect from fics (and mainstream romances in general), of being "soul mates" or perfect for each other. (L comes across as asexual, while Yuriy isn't.) It's refreshing. They are dear to each other, not infatuated.
The effects of trauma are also explored well. Too often do characters spring right back from devastation, but here, we see characters not really ever going to be over their trauma. They're just trying to manage. L wants nothing to do with anything Kira-related, and later sells the SPK building. He doesn't visit Light in prison or ask after him, as we might think he would. He is affected by his touch with death.Â
Light, the ruthless mass murderer we know, is an egoless void of a man. I found his dealings with solitary imprisonment to be very realistic. There is great comfort in rituals. His numbness throughout is a nice change of pace from the megalomania we expect.Â
And B! Oh B. From his unlikely friendship with Watari to his snappy exchanges with L, this B is someone wholly unwhole. I'd rather not spoil his fate, but he's one of fandom's better representations of B.Â
Above all The Body is not a work seeking to impress, if that makes sense. There is no pandering to certain, tried-and-true conventions. The writing is concise. No excessive exposition. It stands on its own merits as a story of life's bleakness and coping, which may be a problem for some, who look for the bombastic and forceful. For me, I found this story wasn't the type to be plowed through, devoured in one sitting. There is a patience required in reading The Body. If you're willing to meander through a fic more thoughtful than the usual fare, please give it a read.Â
I'm going to be using this side-blog for a long ass Death Note fic rec list. I am thorough and critical in what I review, so fair warning before I start. Once every 1-3 days I will post a recommendation; sometimes I will post a recommendation multiple times, in order to analyse it on different levels/chapters/arcs, make a list of my favourite quotes from it, or just generally gush about how great it is.Â
Please send me a private message if there are any stories you are fond of. Writing, above all, will be what I look for. However, I do appreciate well-executed stories that, while formulaic, do satisfy X pairing or Y AU.Â

A Batman Comic Masterpost
Batman is a superhero created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger, debuting in Detective Comics #27 in 1939. The character has gained worldwide recognition and has become an icon of not only DC comics but comic books as a whole. After the death of his parents, Bruce Wayne makes an oath to fight crime in Gotham. He is confronted with a rogue gallery of complex villains, including the psychotic Joker. Gaining the assistance of the Gotham Police Department, Batman fights the faces of crime in the city, gaining and loosing allies through the process.
Note: This masterpost only includes the main Batman centric storylines. These titles are just pulled from my own personal collection, so some story arcs may not be included. I know a lot of people are interested in Batman because of other forms of media (TV shows, movies, etc.) however get intimidated by the sheer volume of storylines. I tried to list the comics in the best canonical order instead of publishing order. If thereâs any errors or broken links feel free to message me. To read .cbr and .cbz files youâll need a program such as Comical, CDisplay, or ComicRack. Support the industry; please buy the currently ongoing titles if youâre interested in the series.
