“In the depths of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer.” -Albert Camus . Applying Camus’s idea, the beginning of a new year ceases to be an exceptional threshold and becomes a simple temporal convention. One more year is merely a number, an arbitrary measure that guarantees no change at all. What is decisive is not the calendar, but the inner disposition with which we move through time. When the world enters, year after year, into winters of the human spirit, Camus’s lesson remains fully valid: to remember that within us there exists an “invincible summer.” Perhaps the best wish for the first day of the year is not the promise of something new, but that we do not lack the strength, nor the lucidity, to continue seeking it. To persist in that search implies sustaining a personal ethic, a silent fidelity to what is most decent and noble in our human condition, even when circumstances seem to deny it.

Upcoming exhibition: A Reality

Michael Hoppen Gallery is proud to present Albarrán Cabrera: A Reality, a new exhibition by the gallery’s celebrated artists. Bringing together 30 works, the exhibition explores their distinctive approach and refined technique in print making. For our second exhibition with the artists, we will present newly created large format works.

The exhibition title reflects the artists’ philosophical approach: a photograph is not reality itself, but a highly subjective and personal representation:

"Using photography we might not be able to answer the big questions about time, reality or space, but we are interested in exploring how a photographic image can make people think about their reality. Being aware is not just an important part of life, it is life as we know it. Using photography, we want the viewers to increase empathy and arouse interest towards their reality."

Through evocative imagery, predominantly focused on the natural world, Albarrán Cabrera offers a powerful sense of escapism, inviting the viewer into a realm of memory and contemplation.

Their distinctive vision is achieved using intricate printing methods on fine materials, executed by hand. These include processes such as Platinum/Palladium and pigment prints on Japanese paper, often made with thin layers of gold leaf.
