‘Follow the yellow brick road,’ we used to sing, as we skipped through this concrete landscape, Barbican-bound. These were the (slightly altered) instructions given by our dad to help us find our way from the station to the Barbican Centre, where he worked at the time. The yellow brick road in question, was a painted yellow line that weaves its way through the Brutalist and futuristic/ visionary architecture of the Barbican Estate. Trips to London were always magical, but these adventures in this surreal landscape - which was unlike anything we saw regularly in our seaside home town of Brighton - were always a little like being swept up by a tornado and dumped unceremoniously in a faraway land, on a mission to find (in our case, unlike Dorothy’s) fun. Even now, when I visit, I think of this mantra on these funny little day trips that have been scored into my memory... Although I don’t slide down the brass banisters inside the Barbican Centre any more, visits here are still always an adventure.
