saskia   had   sat   up   close.   being   all   the   way   in   the   front   pew,   dominic   could   see   her   face.   she   could   stare   towards   dominic,   and   distract.   he   stumbled   over   his   words   a   little   more,   when   she   was   this   close. 

she'd   noticed   that.   it   made   her   cheeks   redden   a   little   more.   and   when   she   smiled,   he   smiled   too.   like   there   wasn't   something   nefarious   going   on   as   the   reason   she   was   even   here.   they   were   starting   to   make   the   most   of   it.   she   could   forget   there   was   a   target   on   her.

everybody   else   could   see   the   back   of   her   head.   platinum   blonde   hair   cascading   perfectly   down   her   back,   a   gold   chain   around   her   neck,   the   cross   hanging   from   the   necklace   had   been   a   gift   from   the   handsome   priest.

to   keep   you   safe.

she   wondered   if   he   thought   prayers   were   not   enough.

for   her   head   offered   nice   and   pretty   on   silver   platter.   this   place   could   be   her   guillotine.

in   order   for   someone   to   fall   into   a   trap,   the   trap   must   be   set   for   the   killer   to   fall   into.   she   has   to   depart   before   the   sermon   finishes.

everyone   has   to   see   her   leave.   including   dominic.   if   his   words   falter   again,   she   wonders   if   it   has   to   do   with   turning   away   from   him.

it's   dark   out.   darkening. 

she's   scared.   but   she   feels   braver   as   she   approaches   dominic's   secret   garden.   it   would   be   nice   to   die   in   a   truly   beautiful   place.   would   the   killer   try   to   grab   her   here?   would   he   even   come?

when   she   hears   the   steps,   they're   not   slow.   they're   rushed.   she   turns   on   her   heel   out   of   fright,   but   her   features   scrunch   up   at   the   face   she   has   come   to   adore.

“dom,   what   are   you   doing   here?”   it's   not   accusatory   -   she   sounds   surprised.   like   they're   both   in   on   this   plan.   there's   only   one   way   to   make   it   work.   let   her   be   the   bait. 

again,   he   doesn't.

@indwellr   proclaims,   ❝   𝙞   𝙝𝙖𝙙   𝙩𝙤   𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙚.   𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩   𝙞𝙛   𝙞   𝙙𝙞𝙙𝙣'𝙩   𝙖𝙣𝙙   𝙨𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜   𝙗𝙖𝙙   𝙝𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙙   𝙩𝙤   𝙮𝙤𝙪?   ❞

something   bad's   already   happened.   something   bad's   been   chasing   her   ever   since   she   got   to   this   town.   something   bad,   something   bad.   yet   something   good   comes   storming   down   the   steps   insistent   that   he   save   her   himself.

she   thinks   he's   the   only   one   who   cares   what   happens   to   her.   it's   a   little   helpless,   this   feeling.   because   she's   luring   a   shark,   and   anything   could   happen,   right?   the   point   is   to   make   sure   nothing   does.

“you   shouldn't   have   followed   me,”   they   can't   be   made,   not   when   they're   this   close,   “what   if   he   saw   you?”   her   digits   brush   his   as   she   reaches   for   his   hand.   deeper   into   the   labyrinth   of   greenery,   she   takes   him.   deeper   into   the   belly   of   the   dark,   with   their   fingers   woven   together,   and   her   heart   racing   in   her   throat.

when   first   she   saw   the   cloth   around   his   collar,   she   thought   he   was   here   to   read   her   last   rites.   she   thought   rooms   filled   with   men   always   involved   some   sort   of   baptism.   infernal   flames   licking   at   her   feet. 

she's   in   an   interrogation   room.   even   though   she's   a   former   victim.   she's   a   key   witness.   what   questions   haven't   they   asked?   her   knee   hasn't   stopped   shaking   since   detectives   wickham   and   stauber   took   their   chairs   across   from   her,   to   cross-examine   and   scrutinize.   they   don't   offer   the   young   priest's   name   up,   though   her   eyes   do   flicker   to   his,   curious.

only   a   little   bit   uncomfortable   with   those   whose   names   she   does   know,   not   the   man   seated   in   the   shadows.

“do   you   want   this   to   happen   to   another   girl?”

of   course   not.   melancholia   etched   into   her   eyes,   her   cheeks,   the   frown   furrowing,   the   eyes   misting   with   tears   that   refuse   to   be   shed.   except   her   gaze   is   so   glossy   now   and   unfocused.   the   eyes   of   the   witness   drop   to   the   table,   to   the   pictures   that   are   hard   to   look   at,   of   the   bodies   that   came   before.

all   those   dead   girls.

but   you   don't   care   if   it   happens   to   me?

instead   she   agrees.

“two   girls   have   turned   up   missing   from   the   parish   of   father   reiss.   we   believe,   there   is   a   value   to   you   returning   to   the   fold."

she'd   never   been   part   of   this   flock.   she   was   an   escapee.   but   attention   had   diverted   somewhere   new.   they   believed   there   was   a   correlation.   and   so   a   name   finally   was   surmised   for   the   priest,   and   saskia   looks   towards   him   again.   it   feels   easier,   looking   towards   him.

“he   will   see   you,   and   he   will   engage.”   she   had   them   in   her   pocket,   a   wire.   a   microchip.   so   they   could   always   know   where   she   was. 

“and   what   do   i   do,”   her   voice   is   quiet,   “when   i   capture   his   attention?”

there's   uncertainty   in   the   room.   it's   a   question   that   should   remain   unasked.   she   supposes   she'll   know,   one   way   or   another,   and   if   it's   a   trap?   then   she's   set   it,   then   she's   part   of   it.

he's   part   of   it   too.

night   has   fallen   when   they   emerge   from   the   station   together.   they're   shoulder   to   shoulder   outside. 

@indwellr   murmured,   ❝   𝙮𝙤𝙪   𝙙𝙚𝙨𝙚𝙧𝙫𝙚   𝙗𝙚𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙧   𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙣   𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩.   ❞

she'd   been   staring   at   him   for   the   better   part   of   being   in   that   room.   now   she   looks   forward.   she's   trying   to   think   of   what   this   is   gonna   look   like.   what   this   is   gonna   do   to   her.   if   this   is   something   she   can   survive.

“why   should   i   get   to   live   and   those   girls   don't?”   that's   the   question   that   was   posed   in   the   room,   wasn't   it?   there's   a   chill   in   the   air.   she   wasn't   dressed   for   the   cold.   the   shivers   have   been   climbing   up   her   spine   and   they   haven't   stopped.   even   now   she   wants   to   check   over   her   shoulder,   but   the   only   thing   behind   her   is   the   station. 

“i   suppose   we   better   work   together   then,”   she   wishes   it   was   under   better   circumstances   they   met   -   there's   a   kindness   to   his   gaze   that   settles   her,   “you   just   might   be   my   one   chance   of   making   it   out   alive.”

it's   meant   to   be   a   joke.   but   why   does   it   hurt   to   say   it?   in   spite   of   her   smile?

she's   been   excited   to   make   this   place   home.   a   home   that   is   her   own,   all   her   own.   she   hasn't   been   here   long.   a   few   months.   she's   working   at   the   flower   shop   stringing   up   bouquets   and   delivering   them   on   holidays,   but   she   hasn't   had   the   luxury   of   receiving   an   arrangement   herself.

he   makes   the   most   beautiful   landscapes.   dreamy.   places   she   wants   to   go.   she   gets   one   every   week.   a   little   treat   to   herself,   when   she   can   scrounge   up   the   funds.   she   would   buy   one   every   single   day   if   she   could.   still   she   stops,   to   watch   him   paint.   smile   at   him   when   their   eyes   meet. 

she   might   even   make   a   fuss   about   one   of   the   paintings,   if   it   means   somebody   else   will   buy   it.   she   would   get   them   all   if   she   could.

she   can   only   ever   stay   for   a   little   while   before   she   has   to   depart   to   open   up   the   shop.   before   she   can   turn   away,   @indwellr   asks,   ❝   𝙬𝙝𝙮   𝙙𝙤   𝙮𝙤𝙪   𝙗𝙪𝙮   𝙢𝙮   𝙥𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙨?   ❞

makes   her   stop   in   her   tracks.

“your   paintings   are   my   favorite   paintings   in   the   world.”   her   brows   furrow   together,   “they   make   me   happy,”   her   lips   are   twitching   upward,   “they   give   me   hope.”   she   tilts   her   head   towards   him,   “i   have   them   all   hung   over   my   home,   you   know.”

did   he   want   to   see?

the   night's   coming   again.   looking   up,   it   feels   like   coming   home.   the   gravity   of   the   universe   keeps   her   grounded.   she   has   always   dreamt   about   what   it   would   be   like   to   be   amongst   everyone,   to   touch   people,   see   people,   feel   people.

they   were   always   so   far   away.

she,   the   winking   recluse.   maybe   she   fell   from   the   sky   because   she   wanted   to   come   a   little   closer. 

“keep   me?”   she's   nothing   like   a   person.   she's   everything   like   a   person.   human   to   a   fault.   she   loves   like   a   person.   she   loves   this   person.   dominic.

he's   the   only   one   that   can   drag   her   gaze   away   from   the   stars.

her   legs   are   tucked   under   her,   knees   turned   towards   him,   she's   partially   nestled   in   his   lap.   people   keep   one   another.   they   keep   promises,   they   keep   vows.   the   way   dominic   keeps   his   arm   around   her,   the   way   he   keeps   her   heart.

@indwellr   whispered,   ❝   𝙮𝙤𝙪'𝙧𝙚   𝙨𝙝𝙖𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜.   𝙞'𝙫𝙚   𝙜𝙤𝙩   𝙮𝙤𝙪.   ❞

her   skin   is   effervescent,   like   an   aurora   trapped   underneath   her   flesh.   she's   still   glowing,   the   very   air   around   her   ephemeral.   maybe   he's   trapped   under   her   spell,   enchanted   by   exposed   figure   still   shimmering.   a   star   still   twinkling   with   every   color   captured   from   the   universe.

the   embers   softening   now.   she's   starting   to   look   like   a   person.   though   the   glitter   sequins   beneath   his   touch   like   she   might   crystallize   in   his   hands.

he   wraps   her   up   in   his   jacket.   they're   not   so   far   from   his   ranch.   there   are   horses   near.   cows.   her   ankles   wobble   as   he   guides   her   to   her   feet.   it's   hard   to   walk.   so   he   doesn't   let   her   careen   like   baby   lamb. 

he   lifts   her   into   his   arms,   and   she   gazes   upon   him   like   he   is   something   alien,   not   she.   it's   freezing   here.   she's   still   shaking,   but   warmed   by   his   soothing   embrace.   she   doesn't   ask   him   if   he's   curious.   does   he   know   what   she   is?   does   he   wonder   often   about   angels?

or   does   he   think   she   is   something   bad?

the  line  had  been  blurring  between  them.  they'd  been  sending  each  other  voicenotes  and  demos  for  weeks,  practicing  harmonies  over  the  phone,  but  it  was  developing  to  much  needed  time  together,  in  person.  how  productive  they  were  when  they  were  together  was  telling  when  the  hour  got  late,  and  she  crawled  a  little  closer  to  lean  her  cheek  against  his  shoulder  so  she  could  watch  him  write  by  hand  when  her  own  wrist  got  tired  and  he  offered  to  take  over.

she  was  nestled  against  the  crook  of  his  neck,  his  arm  coiled  around  her,  hers  wrapped  around  his  waist,  their  ankles  entangled.  they'd  fallen  asleep  not  quite  like  this,  once  or  twice,  and  they'd  nuzzled  closer  and  closer.  maybe  she  didn't  mind  waking  up  in  his  arms.

but  the  nights  were  bleeding  later  and  later,  until  morning  was  stirring,  and  he  still  hadn't  gone  home.

it  was  difficult  to  practice  serenity  when  she  was  hyperaware  of  their  closeness,  and  how  it  was  starting  to  affect  her  breathing.  when  she  felt  his  fingers  splay  out  against  the  small  of  her  back,  stroking  softly.  where  his  penmanship  had  started  to  falter,  the  urge  to  write  fading  into  desire.

@indwellr  murmured,  ❝  𝙮𝙤𝙪  𝙢𝙖𝙠𝙚  𝙢𝙚  𝙖𝙘𝙝𝙚.  ❞‬

pretty  soon,  every  ballad  they  were  writing  was  about  each  other,  wasn't  it?  it  was  in  the  words,  it  was  in  everything.  it  was  in  the  way  she  shivered  when  he  gave  his  ache  a  name,  and  it  spelled  her.

her  palm  to  the  page,  it's  their  scripture,  the  book  they  write  of  their  wanting,  and  she  wants  to  fulfill  the  prophecy.  “let  me  soothe  your  ache.”

it's  like  falling  into  a  dream,  falling  into  him.  a  million  melodies  ricochet  inside  her  brain,  the  unfinished  ballads  develop  their  chorus,  their  verses,  and  she  shifts  so  her  knees  fall  on  either  side  of  him,  straddling  his  lap.  it's  a  long  kiss.  it's  a  love  song.  it's  an  answer  to  his  ache,  her  own  ache  mirrored,  set  loose,  and  splintered.

limerick  fest  hadn't  proven  to  be  a  total  failure.  it  was  where  she  had  met  dominic  reiss  while  promoting  celestial,  soft  launching  her  on  the  circuit  before  announcing  an  inevitable  tour.  but  the  sound  system  had  completely  fallen  apart  ahead  of  her  performance,  and  though  she  was  a  bundle  of  nerves  unspooling,  and  he  had  his  own  set  to  worry  about,  he  offered  to  play  along  for  her,  with  her.  she  had  all  her  sheets  and  he  could  sight  read.

she  thought  heaven  had  sent  her  an  angel.

the  connection  had  been  imminent.  a  sort  of  natural  chemistry  she  had  been  searching  for.  she  had  placed  so  much  faith  and  trust  in  him,  and  it  was  an  acoustic  set  accompanied  by  her  voice  and  his  steady  hand  and  backing  vocals.  his  voice  was  soothing,  and  beautiful.  she  didn't  look  towards  the  audience  once.

she  kept  her  eyes  on  him,  a  magnetism  tugging  her  gaze  towards  his.  when  at  last  the  serenade  came  to  an  end,  and  the  cheers  baptized  them,  the  curtains  fell  to  a  close,  she  could  feel  her  heart  still  racing  in  her  chest.  adrenaline  was  coursing  through  her  like  a  fever.  she  was  beaming  at  him  even  as  the  lights  faded.

@indwellr  confessed,  ❝ 𝙮𝙤𝙪'𝙧𝙚  𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙤𝙭𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜. ❞‬

while  they  sat  in  the  dark,  she  reached  for,  and  squeezed  his  hand,  and  impulse  guided  her  mouth  towards  his.  like  a  siren's  call  in  the  water,  desperate  to  hear  the  ache  on  his  tongue,  to  intoxicate,  to  cloud,  her  own  mind  busy  with  thoughts  of  him,  her  other  hand  still  holds  the  microphone,  free  hand  caressing  his  face. 

she  rips  a  piece  of  cotton  candy  from  the  bundle  they've  procured.  her  tongue's  turning  blue  from  the  sugar  rush.  it's  oversized,  and  underpriced,  yet  she  had  a  sweet  tooth  only  for  him.

she  smiles,  her  cheeks  are  glowing,  she's  blushing  viciously.  her  maw  parts  to  place  the  piece  between  her  teeth,  a  grin  splitting  wider  as  she  swallows  it,  nodding  her  head.

“really?”  her  voice  is  a  tease,  her  eyes  settling  on  him  with  a  sort  of  heaviness  that  makes  the  rest  of  the  world  fade  out.  ”that's  sweet."

neither  have  exactly  broached  the  topic  of  what  they  are,  or  what  this  is,  he'd  asked  her  to  come  to  the  fair  with  him  a  few  nights  ago,  she  asked  him  to  stay  in  town  just  to  see  the  lights  twinkle  in  his  eyes,  and  she  thinks  she's  never  seen  such  a  beautiful  shade  of  blue.  she  wants  him  to  make  this  place  his  home.

she  brushes  her  lips  against  his  cheek,  a  smile  following  in  the  wake  of  the  brevity  of  the  existence  of  that  kiss.  it's  a  hint.  it's  a  glimpse.
