More than 4,000 years ago in Egypt, dozens of men who died of terrible wounds were mummified and entombed together in the cliffs near Luxor.
Looks like Bolas forgot to bring (at least some of) his eternalised friends after all
MFW thereās Amonkhet eternals in WAR
Imagine Bolas doing all this scheming to obtain those lazotep dead, sending Tezzeret to Kaladesh to make sure someone somewhere does a technology real good and manages to once more break the Multiverse with portals, brings a Planeswalker-trapping disc to Ravnica and then just forgetting all his shiny blue troopers when he tries to invade
Look, all Iām saying is it would have had massive comedic value.
I would probably have perished from excessive mirth.
Bolas, cackling at the moment suprĆŖme, in the middle of his dramatic end-of-everyone-elseās-life speech, whirling around theatrically and gesturing at the planar bridge portal thingimabob that was supposed to spew forth countless eternalised warriors ready to fuck up all of Ravnicaās shit but which is currently conspicuously empty:
Look, I already love The Wanderer, Sara Winters didnāt need to go ahead and show her beheading that fucking demon sphinx but she still did and thatās amazing

A Big Vorthos Welcome
Yesterday on Twitter, Trick Jarret let us know that things are in the works to better introduce the MTG Community to Nic Kelman, who is now the person at @wizardsmagic primarily responsible for Magic narrative.Ā
But with emotions running among fans high after this weekās story, I worry that Nicās first impression of us is that weāre a bunch of rabid fans out for blood at the slightest mistake or story hiccup.Ā
And thatās not what we want!! We want a good, open relationship of communication and trust. So letās see if we can get things going with our best foot forward.Ā
Perhaps Nic will be more comfortable introducing himself to us, if we give him a chance to get to know us first. So I thought some introductions might be in order.Ā Ā
With that in mind, Iām asking my fellow Vorthos and MTG fans to reblog this post with an brief greetings and introduction (and be sure to tag @wizardsmagic so they can pass it along to Nic.)Ā
Since Iām writing this post, I suppose I should go firstā¦Ā
Hi Nic! Iām Dave.Ā
Iāve been playing Magic on and off since 1996, though I only became really active in the online MTG community around 2015 when I started this Tumblr blog.Ā
Some of the things I love about Magic stories are the wide range of interesting characters, the diversity of locations among the different planes in the Multiverse, and the bountiful opportunities for speculation, discussion, and collaboration among the community.Ā
I also appreciate Magic stories because even though Iām not a very skilled player, they allow me to still feel strongly connected to the game, and be part of the conversation when new sets and cards are revealed. It adds a dimension where I can still be relevant and valued in the community, even when I rarely win games.Ā
Some quick facts about me:Ā
First set - Ice AgeĀ
Favorite format - CommanderĀ
Favorite plane - LorwynĀ
Favorite card - VigorĀ
Favorite Planeswalker - Tamiyo (though Angrath is really close)Ā
Favorite story article - āReleaseā (Aether Revolt)Ā
Personal Color Identity - Bant (Green/White/Blue)Ā
@wizardsmagicĀ
OK, thatās me. Now who wants to go next?!Ā
(Please donāt leave me standing here awkwardly alone.)Ā
Hi!
Iām Sonja, mostly known as Rudjedet both here and on Twitter. This blog is actually a side blog, because @wizardsmagic finally gave me (us) my precious Egypt-based plane with the Amonkhet block and I wanted a place to nerd out withĀ abandon.Ā
Iāve been playing Magic since 2007; mostly casual, kitchen table stuff though Iāve visited a fair few (pre-)releases, FNMs and GPs. Iāll be honest and say Iāve always been critical of Magicās fiction, both the novels and the online Magic Fiction. Itās partly because Iām critical of every book I read, and partly because fantasy isnāt entirely my genre.Ā
So why am I still invested in the storyline? Because I enjoy seeing cards ācome to lifeā. I enjoy building flavour decks centered around a character, subtype or theme, and giving them stupid names to reflect their background. Some of my horrible brews includeĀ āSorinās Thirstyā,Ā āCurses, Foiled (Again)ā,Ā āBitch These Are Hagsā andĀ āWhat Are All These Sexy Vampires Doing On My Side of the Battlefield I Canāt Focus On Winning Nowā.Ā
I used to write humorous articles tangentially related to Magic, and dabbled a bit in cosplay. I had to give up both because of mental health and time constraints. At the moment, Iām desperately trying to hold on to the Amonkhetu days by working on three papers combining my profession (Egyptologist) with Magic.Ā
Iāll move on to the quick facts now, because I canāt trust myself to talk about Egypt/Amonkhet without going way overboard:
First set: Lorwyn
Favourite format: Casual constructed
Favourite plane: Amonkhet
Favourite plane that isnāt Amonkhet because of course itās Amonkhet: Innistrad
Favourite card: Master Transmuter / Stalking Vampire (I canāt choose donāt make me)
Favourite planeswalker: I have a soft spot for Tezzeret donāt judge me
Favourite story: The Writing on the Wall (Amonkhet)
Personal colour identity: Yore (WUBR)
Some very loose, very random Stick-Gods sketches~

having had the slicky ones slide everywhere when i tried to shuffle em, i do like the mattes more and pretty much use them exclusively now. you also have to be careful with double sleeving bc sometimes 100 cards double sleeved won't fit in the deckbox :|
Oh man, yeah I can see that might give you some trouble. Hapatra is brawl so 60 obv, but I did notice that it only just fit in my EDH deckbox, despite weighing them down with Gardinerās grammar (which is a huge ass & heavy book) both after putting them in the inner sleeves and after sleeving them with the mattes. Probably couldnāt fit this in a regular deckbox now.

I couldnāt not buy these sleeves for the Hapatra deck. Also because itās a scifi dragon and Iāll buy literally anything scifi especially if itās dragons.Ā
Anyway.Ā
These sleeves are a bloody nuisance. Double-sleeving is nigh impossible with the Dragon Shield matte sleeves because theyāre inexplicably tighter than the shiny sleeves. In return youāre supposed to get more bang for your buck as far as durability goes, and honestly? I can see it.Ā
Or rather, feel it. These sleeves have such well-sealed edges that itās like stabbing yourself with a knife if you hold the bottom corner against your skin. Pre-game prep is similarly annoying. Although the matte back is supposed to give you superior handling, what it also does is make shuffling a test of patience.
But you know⦠scifi dragon with Osiris in its name.Ā šš¼āāļø
Iāve built a Hapatra brawl deck.Ā
I have dubbed itĀ dSr.t n.t mwt, a deckĀ as messy as the Ptolemaeic line of succession. Similarly in keeping with Ptolemaeic family tradition, Iām trying very hard to kill off my own for my personal betterment.Ā
If any new followers are following me because of the Egypt-knowledge (and bad niche jokes) as promised by the Cleopatra-post, Iād suggest to follow my main account @rudjedetĀ instead. Over here I mostly talk about Egypt in relation to the Magic: the Gathering block Amonkhet!
sundayswiththeilluminatiĀ replied to your post:Ā āsoooo was it just me, or did you get Apep vibes from The Hand That...ā:
If we're talking about gods getting skewered, Samut & Hazoret did team up to off the Scorpion God by impaling it on an obelisk in Ep. 7 of HoD.
Sure. But the combination of Hazoretās spear and Seth being said to fend off Apep with a spear, and Hazoret tangentially reminding me of Seth in one or two aspects, just makes for a very nice mental image concerning Bolas Apep-like vibes.
soooo was it just me, or did you get Apep vibes from The Hand That Moves? Bolas as the embodiment of chaos?
I donāt think it was just you! The Apep vibes were very strong, but Iām finding it hard to say those are the only vibes Iām getting from Bolasā Amonkhetu characterisation/iconography within the Magic Story of Amonkhet. In all honesty, itās actually a bit of a clutter with at least three deities/traditions I can see having their influence on his depiction.
At first, there was the association with the sun god - the horns, the second sun, his position as god of gods, and his title of god-pharaoh.Then we got the whole god-murder thing as a way to usurp royal/divine power, which seemed to point to a Seth-like strain of influence (and someone on Twitter suggested Gideon would take on a Horus role to defeat Bolas).Ā But the snake devouring the world we see now is far more reminiscent of Apep than of Seth; even if Seth is also an embodiment of chaos.Ā
The latter makes little biased me hope we will see a Seth-like entity or deity to come kick Apepās ass, though the odds of that are slim. Weāre more likely to see either a Horus-role (and I hope to God it isnāt Gideon because thatād be an incredible shame on many levels, and also Gideon would have to be related to Bolas in some way), or an actual solar deity-like entity. Iām not willing to go out on a limb here, but if I was, I would probably suggest Oketra playing a role in this, since Apep was not only depicted as defeated by Seth, but also at times by Ra himself, with Ra having the form of a cat.Ā
Knowing a little bit about how creative minds work when it comes to working mythological inspiration into an original story, I consider it quite likely they mayāve gone that route, because thatās what I would have done had I a basic knowledge of Egypt and wanted to reference mythology in my fantasy story.
Rereading through this ask, and then remembering this stela,Ā and this other ask about Hazoret, my mind is now going in an entirely different direction - this direction being:
How cool would it be if,Ā ifĀ we go back to Amonkhet and if that return is the backdrop for Bolasā downfall, Hazoret would skewer that giant wurm with her spear much like Seth skewered Apep on that stela?

Hello! Someone on Reddit linked to an Amonkhet Invocation's Wrath of God apparently translated in ancient Egyptian. I found that super cool, but do you think you can tell us if this translation is correct? /r/magicTCG/comments/62q9sq/akhoc_wrath_of_god_invocation_in_ancient_middle/
For some reason I thought Iād posted this but itās been stuck in my drafts instead. Donāt ask me how but I guess my brain just hasnāt been functioning properly since forever.
Anyway, hereās a line by line transliteration/translation of the Wrath of God card, with commentary.
Dnd nTrWrath (of) God
Both accurate and inaccurate: Middle Egyptian has a direct genitive construction wherein two nouns (possessor and possessed) can be written side by side. However, the flagpole hieroglyph, nTr, should have been written at the start of the line because of honorific transposition. It doesnāt make a difference for the transliteration, since that would still be Dnd nTr, but it just looks weird. It also doesnāt need the seated god-determinative after it.Ā
ra.wy sn (assuming similar RL orientation as Dnd nTr)Two two suns
The mana cost only works if you take the ideogram ra (sun) as an ideogram for white mana, obviously. This is all very literal.Ā
HkAMagic, incantation
Could work asĀ āsorceryā, on a semantic level. HkA as a term isĀ not one-on-one translatable with the fantasy kind of magic. Also, the orientation of these signs has suddenly flipped from RL to LR. I can see why these hieroglyphs are oriented LR, but I fail to see why Dnd nTr and ra.wy sn are oriented RL.Ā
iw HDi Ha.w nb m priDestroy every body in (the) battlefield
Jesus, these hieroglyphs are a mess. The orientation changed again,Ā to RL. But the palm rib (the sign to the right of the arm-with-shield-and-club) is facing the wrong way. The word/sign groupings are also weird. m (the owl) and pri (the battlefield group) should not be mashed together like this. I also havenāt seen pri spelled like that before, but that could be me.Ā
As far as the grammar goes, Iām ridiculously out of practice with translating/parsing so while Iām not 100% certain this is correct I canāt pinpoint exactly why. Iām honestly no good when it comes to translating toĀ hieroglyphs, since that was never required of us in uni.
n rDi.n=s ts anx tw nhiwithout her(?) giving (?) life this escape
Another orientation change - LR again now. While hieroglyphs could change orientation within a text depending on the situation, thereās no reason for the constant change on this card. Itās just⦠wrong.Ā The word groupings are once again off. The r sign (mouth) should not be below the two arms (n), for example.Ā
Grammatically the first part seems okay because I want to read a negation of the circumstantial sDm.n=f (n rDi.n=s). The rest I canāt make any sense of. The suffix =s is odd. Iād prefer to read =sn (they/them/their), but =sn isnāt at all written like this. Another option could be n rDi n=s,Ā āwithout giving to herā.
I canāt find a word that corresponds to ts that would make sense in this context (the only ts isĀ ābreadā). Iām also not sure what to make of ālife this escapeā. I guess itās an attempt to communicate the meaning ofĀ āregenerateā, since Middle Egyptian isnāt known to have that word.
Hey all, Iāve made an archive of all Egyptological asks Iāve answered, both regular questions answered on the main blog, and Amonkhet-related ones Iāve answered here. As always, feel free to ask more!
