I have been hyper-aware of how much fandoms (especially surface level/mainstream fandom) has changed over my life. I graduated high school right about 2000 but didn't really get into "nerdy" genre stuff till later on in that decade. I look back then, then look at NOW and it's almost painful. For so long fandom was about what you LOVED about something, but now its so hard to find spaces where it doesn't feel like fandom is mostly about what you HATE.
Some of it is clearly "bigger than fandom" cultural issues, but I think a lot of it is what social media and algorithmic web based worlds has made things. Rage and hate gets clicks. And ten, twenty plus years ago nerdy stuff had so little, ESPECIALLY in video format. If you liked any kind of sci-fi or fantasy stuff you had to cling joyfully to the little you had.
Now there's so much... I think that makes being critical easier. And that can be good thing! Art can always be better, and genres can and should grow and evolve. But media criticism so easily turns into petty bitching and hate when culture at large has stopped being about what we love.
I am trying to be more aware of it. To not engage in hating of stuff, especially stuff I love and even more for stuff that just isn't for me. I want to engage with media and genres I adore in better ways, I want to celebrate what I LOVE about them and to to think/talk less about what I hate.
I try to use every bit of the comics I make my stuff with, and even save all the otherwise useless scraps to cobble together mini bookmarks that double as business cards. One of my favorite little side projects :)
