I just can't over the fact that someone probably went to Walmart, asked where the party aisle was-- looked past the leis and hula skirts...collected all the tiki torches they could find, then went to the check-out. Cashier was probably like "Oooh fun, are you having a Luau?" Because OF COURSE white folk can't even protest POC without needing and benefiting from cultural contributions from the very POC they hate. THE IRON KNEE.

My brother turned 11 on Monday, and its been giving me anxiety for weeks. He's twice exceptional, meaning he is highly intelligent but also has certain social disabilities. Being Black in America, means I am SCARED for my brother to age, because with each passing year, he is less little and cute; and more at risk of being seen as some kind of threat. He is too young and green to understand the magnitude of the lessons I give him on following directions, not running in public places, not being too animated or excited. Being Black in America, means you have to be perfect. You're not allowed to be scared. You are not allowed to stutter, or look at anyone the wrong way. You can't navigate the world without being cautious or aware of your surroundings. You can't walk through certain neighborhoods without garnering attention. You can't play music too loud, or drive too fast. You can't hesitate. You can't run. You can't run away. You can't walk. You can't talk. You can't breath. Do all of this right, and manage to be as perfect as possible, and there is still no gurentee that you can keep your life. Keep your life, and what kind of life is it--when you are consistently aware of how easy it might be to lose it.

White privilege highlight of the day : Kendall Jenner being called a "child" at age 21 and somehow being rendered incapable of being responsible for her poor decision making skills. Pepsi actually apologized to HER! Like her people didn't read the treatment, and she wasn't present on set during the shoot. I wonder why nobody thought Trayvon Martin was just a child, or Tamir Rice, or Michael Brown despite their being murdered at age 18 and under. People don't understand, its never about the subject. It's not just about Pepsi ads or hairstyles, or word choice. Its the whole conversation that surrounds it, the pervasiveness of white supremacy, and the reckless inequality marginalized communities face without recourse.

Do Hollywood studios REALLY not understand that if the source material is good (story, adaptation, remake etc) nobody cares if the lead actor is a big name, or sex symbol. This isn't 1920, or even 2005. We are actually disinterested in seeing the same tired white actors and Will Smith playing every character under the sun. Give us a "no name" with strong acting chops...we will watch. Give us an Asian actor when the script specifies, and even when it doesn't, give us a lead Asian actor anyway. People binge watch Netflix like its crack and we can't even name the lead British/Brazilian actor who is blowing our minds for 12hrs straight. #getittogether or stay losing coins.
