An electric vehicle runs on a 3 phase AC motor instead of an Internal Combustion engine. Now take a look at the types of Electric Vehicles.

There are basically three types of electric vehicles in the market right now. They are as follows:

Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV):

Battery Electric Vehicles or BEVs are cars that are powered only by an electric battery. As it doesn't use any bio-fuel, it doesn't emit any pollutants. The batteries are charged by an external power source. It can be a DC or AC charging system. The average charging time is about 8 hours and the EVs that support fast charging get fully charged under 1 hour.

In the current market, the BEVs are Tata Nexon EV, MG ZS EV, Hyundai Kona Electric, etc.

Plugin Hybrid Electric Vehicles(PHEV):

This is the type where we use both an electric battery and an IC engine. The electric battery can be charged by a power source where the IC engine produces torque by combusting the bio-fuel.

The current PHEVs are Mahindra e-Verito, BMW i8, Volvo XC90 T8.

Hybrid Electric Vehicles(HEV):

Hybrid Electric Vehicles also have both the IC engine and the Electric battery. The electric battery is charged by the torque produced by the IC engine. The electricity is also generated during the use of regenerative braking. Here the heat produced by the brakes converts into electrical energy.

The Electric vehicle uses a 3 phase induction motor whereas normal vehicles use internal combustion (IC) engines. EV uses electricity and regenerative braking for propulsion. It uses a large traction battery which stores charge and provides power to the motor to make it run.

Working Principle:

If we go deeper we can see that the motor consists of a stator and a rotor. Where the rotor is created with a collection of conductive rods and they are connected and short-circuited with end rings. When the electric power goes into the stator coil it creates a 4 polar magnetic field. This magnetic field induces an induction current in the rotor and that creates a torque to rotate the rotor. In this method, the drive wheel gets the power to rotate. We use high traction lithium-ion batteries which are connected in series and parallel combinations and are surrounded with glycol coolant. This coolant goes to the radiator and exchanges heat with the environment. We can get the highest efficiency at any RPM as it is not an IC engine. In comparison with the IC engine, it gives more power (90% efficiency).

Regenerative Braking:

Now come to the point of regenerative braking. When we stop pressing the accelerator of the car, then the momentum stored in the wheel starts rotating the drive wheel and creates an opposite magnetic field that creates a current of reverse direction and it gets stored in the batteries. This is how the friction loss gets saved. Here the inverter plays a major role as it controls the speed of the drive wheel and keeps it higher than the RMF. This is how the motor acts as a generator and generates current for storing in the battery.
