We were told that our upcoming dog-sport championship will include search areas in a fire station.
Baby Muppet has never been to a fire station. I imagine there may be all sorts of new smells and things to get excited about (and distracted by.)
If he was a horse, I'd take him to a schooling event as close to that environment as I could find. That way he can settle in and do what he does best, unbothered by the no-longer-novel environment, on the big day.
But he's not a horse and there are not "firehouse schooling days".... so I emailed the county fire & EMS department and asked if we could arrange to visit a fire station. That way he can walk around, sniff everything, and get used to the environment before we need to work in a fire station.
I am only reassured that I've not *completely* lost the plot because I fully grasp that this is a weird, abnormal thing to do and I don't expect anyone to think otherwise.
But still... crazy dog lady level up, for sure.
An update: someone from the fire department called today and we are currently playing phone tag!
Who has four paws and gets to visit the fire station any time he wants?
THIS guy! 🤣😂 We caught up with the nice fire department man and we can visit our local station whenever we like. They are excited to meet Baby Muppet and show him around. He will be delighted to meet them. ❤️
(I will try to remember to take photos!)
He was not in the mood to pose for a photo (of course… today of all days…) but we had a great sniff-around, met all the firefighters and took them cookies, answered questions, and learned all the smells of trucks and gear!
The only time that I've ever felt peace is with you near
The only place that I've ever felt home is with you here
So, if the sunny skies start turning grey
And the headlines say it's our last day
I'll take your hand and say
If the end of the, end of the world's tonight
Then I'll stay, then I'll stay if you want me to
If the end of the, end of the world's tonight
Then I'll stay, then I'll stay, then I'll stay with you

Our neighbors are having an addition built onto their home, and the chief of security is monitoring the situation closely.
One of the weird things I do with the dogs is that I never try teaching them not to bark at things outside the house, the doorbell, etc. It can be a scary world, and we are home alone quite a bit. If they see or scent something out of the ordinary, I am fine with them making a big noisy to-do about it. They are large, powerful dogs and they can look and sound pretty imposing when they choose to.
What I have taught them, though, is that after they carry out their alert, I will tell them they did a good job and say thank you. Once they hear praise, they stop barking and we all go get a cookie. I don’t yell or fuss at them to stop barking. If they want to go check the windows and doors during the alert phase, I let them. Once we can see the UPS truck or the pest control salesman or building contractor (or whatever caused them to alert), I praise them and tell them thank you, and we all proceed to the kitchen for a treat.
I don’t have a way to test it but my suspicion is that if I were not able to praise and thank them (or walk into the kitchen and hand them a cookie), they would continue making a tremendous racket. In the event of an actual emergency, that’s what I would want them to do.
In the end, rather than everyone being stressed out and frustrated every time the dogs bark at something, we all end up very well pleased with ourselves for carrying out our assigned roles in yet another intruder preparedness drill.
Isn’t dog “training” interesting?
Yet ANOTHER pest control salesman today. The Airedale Terrier alarm system worked beautifully. I opened the door, Baby Muppet’s collar in one hand, and the young man said, “oh, uh, sorry. Is he friendly?”
Bro, I do not know you. I am a fairly small middle aged lady who has just opened the door to a stranger. Even if he IS friendly, why would I tell you that?
I said, “well…. I wouldn’t come any closer…” and had the pleasure of watching the pest control salesman back up several steps and get a lot less interested in peddling pest control.
And then he left and we all came back inside for a cookie and a rousing round of “who’s a good dog?!?!”

Through an interesting series of events, we realized there was a leak in the fuel tank for our gas fireplace. It was a small leak but the gas company takes it pretty seriously. So today a nice man came and drained all the remaining fuel…. With this torch-y thing. In my backyard. During a thunderstorm.
It was all very interesting but tragically, I had no marshmallows, graham crackers, or Hershey bars.
It took hours. In the end no one got struck by lightning, the tank is empty and will be replaced later this week, and the power (which blinked a few times) is now back on. The dogs cannot believe I let a stranger start a huge fire in our backyard and are watching me more closely than ever.
Spent the evening on the couch with a sedated (but still unhappy) Baby Muppet while all our neighbors set off fireworks. Not sure why this situation prompted me to pick up the ol’ iPad and mess around in Procreate but here is the start of something that’s kinda nice.
(and will probably never be finished because I usually don’t have time to sit still. But kinda nice just the same.)

It’s too hot to even think about going outside, let alone grilling anything. I didn’t really want to turn the oven on, either… but it still seems like an occasion worthy of something tasty.
I used this recipe and instead of making the dressing (too much like real cooking)…. I just mixed it with premade avocado lime ranch dressing. Quick, easy, suuuuuuper good. It’s either a salad, a side dish, or a snack; whatever floats your boat.
Also caved on the oven thing (briefly) and made a panzanella recipe from elsewhere. Pic and review pending.
Stay cool out there, babes.

At least I’m consistent 🤷🏻♀️
Bestie and I went out to buy plants and do a few other dog-accessible errands this morning. At one garden center we met an older gentleman who said, “I grew up with a big Airedale named Paco!” and I said, “well this is a big Airedale named (Baby Muppet)!” And we had the nicest little chat. He was so excited to see an Airedale in the wild ❤️ He said he has a German Shorthair Pointer named Huck that he loves very much. I said GSPs are definitely on my ‘shortlist’ and I’d love to have one someday.
We talked about hunting and living with dogs for a few minutes. He said, “Huck isn’t really ‘a dog’, he’s just my best guy who happens to have four paws. It’s not an owner-dog thing, we’re just best friends.”
I said, “That’s how I feel, too. We are very best best friends.” ❤️
