Maruma novels- Wolfram’s clothes
I like to draw so I can’t help but think about Wolfie’s clothes.
Here’s an analysis of his clothes in the novels.
For starters, as you know Temari-sensei wasn’t a professional when she started drawing for the maruma novels (in 2000), the manga only started in 2005, once the anime got big in 2004. I’m pretty sure she must have taken some drawing classes in 2004ish, which is when the style and clothes changed for the novels.
The point I’ll try to make here is that the only reason why the blue military outfit is Wolfram’s staple outfit is because of the anime. Originally, I think that the most common outfit he wore was a variation of the light blue outfit in the cover for the manga(2012), minus the cape:
Hear me out, I know that’s “manga Wolf”, but let me draw your attention to the first couple of times we saw Wolfram in novels 1 and 2 .
You can’t deny the similarity between outfits. A closed neck, no puffy white thingy, no black thingy on his shoulder. No thingy to carry his sword. This outfit looks a lot like that manga cover in my opinion.
However, when Wolf was alone with Yuuri he initially wore this shirt:
The first one is from when Jozak ‘caught’ Wolfram and Yuuri rolling on the couch, second one was from when Yuuri asked Wolf to take a bath with him .
So Wolf’s usual at home shirt was originally this fluffy pirate thing. The shirt eventually turned into the negligee from novel 4, here:
So what happened? How did Wolfram’s staple uniform come to be?
Well, we do see the uniform in Novel 1, chapter 4, during the ‘celebratory dinner’, when the brothers are in ‘full dress’
-> Since Conrad is wearing his, it must mean that full dress for those brothers is being in uniform. (部屋にいたのは長男と三男で、彼等は二人とも当たり前のように制服姿だった。コンラッドがそうなのだから、その兄弟だって正装といえば軍服だ。)
So wearing their military uniform was ‘formal wear’, not what they were wearing all the time. However, once the anime ran with it, and made Wolf wear it constantly, it ended up being incorporated to the novels as well.
Yes, Wolf still has different travelling outfits, but his usual wear became his ‘military uniform’, which was originally meant to be ‘special celebratory wear’
Starting with novel 10, in 2005, after the anime, you can see him wearing the uniform all the time, all the way to novel 17, the very last illustration of the novel is him wearing this again.
So while, yes, I know, it’s a character and they make him wear this in manga and anime to simplify the process, it kinda bugs me a little bit that according to the original this was supposed to be his (and Gwen’s and Conrad’s) formal wear, not everyday wear.
If you look at the initial illustrations for Wolf and Conrad you can see they both had this ‘detached’ sleeve thing in their normal wear outfits.
It makes sense that Wolfram wouldn’t be having his puffy white thing whatever it is around his neck all the time, since it looks so annoying and overly luxurious. You’d think a soldier would wear something a little more comfortable and not something that looks like he has to be fixing constantly so it doesn’t get undone.
And that’s my analysis for today.
For those who asked me before ‘why did you stop’ XD , it’s because I have to work tomorrow, friends. XDD If I don’t stop myself I’ll ruin my own health talking about the novels.
