normalize my 12th grade English teacher, who admitted that his favorite TV show was Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and when a male student suggested that it was because Buffy/Sarah Michelle Gellar was hot, wrinkled his face like he’d bitten into something rotten and dead, and said, “At my age (he was 53), there is nothing less sexy than a teenager. You’re all disgusting messes.” It was 1999, I was 17, and I’d grown up in conservative Christian schools and churches. In my life I’d heard heard dozens of sermons from male preachers and teachers and even some older students, whining about how hard it was to be a dude and not commit the sin of thinking sexual thoughts, and how they needed women to wear long skirts and cover their bodies to not objectify them
and my bitter, misanthropic, atheist Brit Lit teacher, who hated my class because he was obsessed with teaching Tom Sawyer but got stuck with Shakespeare and Jane Austen, was the first, and this day the last man I have ever heard articulate a rebuttal from the depths of his soul to the idea that it was normal for teenage girls to be desirable to middle aged men
RIP Henry Dickerson, who passed away last night. I tried explaining to him once that he was a tumblr legend, but I’m not sure it took.
For Mr. Dickerson, the Tumblr legend
i think having the name dickerson also solidifies behind a tumblr legend
My favorite thing to add to my text post is Dick remembering everything that's retconned. So
Jason: sometimes I wish Bruce never adopted me
Dick: I almost adopted you
Jason:... What?
Dick: back when you were a blonde acrobat, you had the same trauma as me, I wanted to adopt you.
Jason: when I was WHAT?
Dick: yeah, you were menace back then too-
Jason: BRUCE DICK IS ACTING WEIRD! HE'S SAYING I USED TO BE BLONDE AND AN ACROBAT!
Bruce: he does that sometimes
Dick: Bruce remember when Alfred didn't exist yet and it was just you and me?
Bruce: sure chum *pats head*
Dick: what is Julie doing now?
Bruce: *whispering above Dicks head* I have no idea who that is.
Bruce: No idea why don't you go look her up?
Dick: ok *leaves*
Jason: what the hell?
There's plenty of fics like this, but what do you think of the trope of Deathstroke going after the Titans in his rage over Grant's death, only to get faced with the fact he's about to kill a teenager, a bunch of teenagers, when he actually has Robin at his mercy?
He's not a good man. He definitely wasn't a good father. But some sliver of those things make him back down when he's forcibly reminded that he's facing the Teen Titans.
I love when Slade is a straight up sack of shit, but giving him a way to be even slightly redeemable is also fun.
I especially like the idea of them just referring to themselves as the Titans. They’ve always just been the Titans, everyone refers to them as just the Titans. Slade goes after these Titans as revenge for his son.
Only to finally get Robin cornered, the others all knocked out behind them, and he literally backs Robin into a corner. Robin is beaten, bruised, bleeding. He’s breathing heavy, labored. He’s not backing down.
But Slade can see the slightest shiver of fear coarse through him, maybe as he rips off Robin’s mask.
And suddenly these big blue eyes are looking at him, and all Slade sees is a scared kid. A boy younger than his own sons.
And he remembers that this is Robin. He’s Batman’s kid sidekick. The others are just his little teenage friends. And they’re all goody goody hero-types.
There’s no way they killed his son. They wouldn’t have killed his son.
“Tell me,” he says slowly, leaning down in Robin’s face, “who killed my son.”
“Your son?”
“Grant,” Slade barks in his face. “Ravager.”
“Ravager,” Robin says, his voice cracking. Slade hates that he can tell this kid feels guilty for Grant’s death. “HIVE. We think it had to do with HIVE. We tried to save him, I swear we did–”
“Get your team back home, kid,” Slade tells him, and he shoves Robin back into the wall before leaving.
Dick is frozen there as Slade leaves, watching him stomp away out of the building.
He has no idea what just happened.
Reverse Robins makes everything surrounding Mirage so painful.
So you’re Dick, and everything involving Mirage just went down. Your teammates begin to gossip about you cheating, when that isn’t what happened, and like with all other gossip, it makes its way up into the Justice League.
Now you’re Tim and Jason. For almost a decade, you’ve had to deal with this perfect golden child doing everything you’ve ever done but better. He’s a natural born acrobat; Bruce can’t stop bragging about how skilled he is at such a young age. He’s a natural charmer, never struggling to connect with the heroic world in the same way they did. He’s happy. You’ve never had the privilege.
And then you hear that your perfect sibling “cheated” somewhere along the grape vine. That perfect facade seemingly comes crumbling down. You run with it.
Suddenly, every opportunity you get, you bring it up to take Dick down a peg. It’s payback for every time you’ve felt lessened. There’s a primal hurt beyond hurt in the back of Dick’s eyes, but you do your best to shake off the guilt because it’s finally his turn.
Now you’re Dick again, and every time you think you’ve started to recover from flinching at every touch and second-guessing every person who ever approaches you, your two older brothers torment you again.
Can we make it a little more fucked up and heartbreaking?
Dick is barely 18.
He’s barely 18 and he thinks his girlfriend wants to sleep with him for the first time.
He’s barely 18 and he’s just lost his virginity with his first serious girlfriend.
He’s barely 18 and he finds out it was all a lie, all a ruse.
He’s barely 18 and now all his friends are calling him a cheater. None of them are taking a moment to even listen to him. He gets told that he’s an idiot for not recognizing that an imposter wasn’t his girlfriend.
He’s barely 18 and now his older brothers have heard about it and won’t stop bringing it up, won’t stop rubbing it in his face. He has no idea why they even care, it’s not like they’ve bothered with the Titans before, it’s not like they’ve ever shown any interest in Dick’s life at all.
He can’t live in Titans Tower because all of his friends have turned on him. He can’t live in the manor because Tim and Jason harass him every chance they get. He can’t live with Damian in the penthouse because he’s on a long term mission in space and won’t be back for another couple months.
He’s barely 18 and he’s relocated to Blüdhaven, of all places. He has a crappy apartment and a crappy job, but at least it’s away from everyone else. But still, every time he has to go to the batcave, every time he has to interact with anyone in the hero community, he’s reminded of what happened. He can’t escape it.
He barely eats. He barely sleeps. He barely speaks.
He goes out at night beating up would-be muggers and other common goons. He makes enemies in BlĂĽdhaven as Nightwing. But Dick Grayson stays firmly under the radar. Dick Grayson hardly leaves his apartment.
When Damian and the others from his mission get back, Damian hears Tim and Jason snickering about something related to Dick. They insinuate that Damian is going to be disappointed in him.
“Highly unlikely,” he tells them, not bothering to stick around to find out what they’re talking about. He’d rather hear about it from Dick.
Except he can’t find Dick anywhere. And none of his littlest brother’s friends will give him any answers as to where he might be.
He hates to use it, but he eventually checks the data he knows Bruce keeps on them from the trackers in their arms he thinks they don’t know about. And when he finds his baby brother has been spending majority of his time in Blüdhaven, he’s shocked.
He grows concerned when he enters the apartment only to find Dick heaving over the toilet. He tries to ask what’s wrong, tries to help, reminded of the days when Dick was his Robin and he was Dick’s Batman, but Dick just keeps shaking his head and pushing him away.
When he finally manages to get Dick to tell him what’s wrong, Damian feels like the entire world just tilted.
He feels like a failure. Like he failed the most important job he had. He feels like he should have been there to stop it, instead of being in space.
Because what’s the point of being a hero if he couldn’t save his baby brother – the boy who’s practically his son – from something like this.
“You did nothing wrong,” he tells Dick, holding him tight.
“Yes I did,” Dick insists, his voice small, cracking.
“No, you did not.”
“Then why does everyone keep saying I did?”
Damian’s heart shatters into smaller and smaller pieces with each sob Dick lets out.
“Because they are all morons,” he tells Dick. “You. Did nothing. Wrong.”
Dick is breaking down in Damian’s arms, muttering, “It was supposed to be special.” He presses himself closer to Damian, as if he could disappear inside his arms if he tried hard enough.
“I know,” Damian tells him with a sigh. “I know.”
Tonight, Damian will make sure Dick is alright. Tomorrow, he’ll bring him home with him so he doesn’t have to live in the cesspit that is Blüdhaven.
And then the day after-
The day after, he’s going to make everyone who hurt his baby brother regret they were ever even born.
Does everything surrounding Blockbuster happen somewhere between Dick’s departure and Damian’s return, or is this all still Mirage?
Because, if you wanna do another angst multiplier, that’s the way to do it.
Blockbuster burns down Haly’s. He thinks it’s another thing — another failure — he’ll be tormented about. Another way his older brothers can knock him down a peg. Dick doesn’t return home.
His apartment, the only one in Blüdhaven he could afford with his job, blows up. All the savings and small trinkets he’d brought in his quick escape from Gotham burn with it. He’s on the street now. A warm meal from Alfred is a few hours away, but so are the questions and judgmental stares that would follow such an abrupt entrance. Dick doesn’t return home.
Tarantula happens. Dick has already been crucified for something like this by his family before. Why would this time be any different? They’d probably assume he was asking for it, just like they did with Mirage. Was he?
Dick doesn’t return home.
Ngl the whole tarantula situation makes me so so sad in general so I was thinking more along the lines of “If Damian finds out about Mirage and puts a stop to the way everyone is blaming Dick, maybe Tarantula never happens bc he keeps a closer eye on the people his baby brother works with and clocks her as a creep from the get go”
But that’s not to say that if the tarantula situation DOES get added into the mix while Damian is still in space, I think it would do irreparable damage. In several different ways.
And I don’t think Dick would ever trust Tim and Jason again, because while he was being constantly hurt and blamed for it, they never once tried to help him. They never tried to find out what was going on with him. They never even asked him. They just blamed, blamed, blamed, just like everyone else.
But then Damian comes home and immediately figures out something is wrong? Immediately helps him? Immediately realizes that everyone else left him to slip between the cracks?
Why couldn’t his other big brothers do that? Why couldn’t they just ask him what happened? Why did they let him work with Tarantula?
Why why why why why?
Dick is 18, and he feels like in the span of a single year, his entire life has been destroyed. He doesn’t know what to do. He doesn’t know why no one else in his family wants to help him. It’s clearly all his fault, there’s something wrong with him. Maybe he’s just unlovable. Maybe he’s tainted. Maybe he’s poison.
But then Damian comes home and immediately does everything he can to prove that Dick isn’t the problem. Dick isn’t the one who was wrong. Dick isn’t tainted. Dick isn’t poison.
Dick is loved, loved, loved and Damian will do anything he can to make sure Dick never forgets that again.

i cannot get the idea of dick going back in time out of my head i love those AUs so much but instead of killing the joker or anything i think it would be funny if he just snatched jason and damian and took them to like france or ireland or something and just raised them for a few months. it completely fucks the timeline but they’re all having the time of their lives. dick is like physically 16 or something and he SHOULD be an incompetent guardian/babysitter to them, but spiritually he’s 28 and he’s dealt with them at their brattiest so he’s not even fazed by any of it. bruce and talia finally find them and barge in all panicked expecting to see them all kidnapped and tied to chairs or some shit, but dick is riding a unicycle upside down (peddling with his hands) while damian stands on top of his feet and jason throws objects at them to try to get them to fall over. it’s insanity and dick has never been happier.
Trying to picture the unicycle thing made me dizzy omg lmao
Love the idea of him just fucking off to France with the kiddies tho. “Actually I’m their dad now, u had ur chance and u blew it sorry”
Meanwhile Bruce is so confused bc “I only had Jason for a DAY–” followed by a long pause before, “Dick where the hell did you get a baby”
And that’s when Talia enters like “haaaaaa about that”
wait ok i just saw that you reblogged this post:
https://www.tumblr.com/batsandbirdbrains/805060252954460160/reverse-robins-makes-everything-surrounding-mirage
and omfg it’s so angsty and sad dude BUT imagine how much worse it would be if add the Liu situation into the mix. like maybe in this AU Damian was away on a long-term mission, Tim and Jason have fucked off to god knows where, and so it’s just Dick and Bruce alone for the first time in a long time. And Dick is barely 16, and he’s in the midst of puberty, he’s hormonal and angsty and he misses Damian and people are starting to look at him more and more, making creepy comments about him and it makes him so uncomfortable and Bruce notices and he gets more controlling as a result because he’s trying to protect Dick. But this just causes more strife between them so Dick runs away after a bad fight between them and ends up with Liu and Eddie, who groom him. Liu is his first girlfriend and he doesn’t really know that much about relationships so Liu is the one who teaches him everything. He thinks that he’s just being a good boyfriend. Then he finds out she was just using him the whole time, and it crushes him. By the time he goes back to Bruce, both Tim and Jason are there and they tease him about throwing a fit and being too gullible, and they ridicule him for being “dumb enough” to trust Eddie and Liu. They don’t know what went down between Dick and Liu, but their constant bullying is what causes Dick to swear to himself that he won’t tell anyone about it, because he’s worried they’ll just make fun of him for being too stupid to realize what was happening. Dick decides to forget about it and push it to the back of his mind. He stops considering Liu his first girlfriend, stops thinking about her altogether. He gets with Kory, and he’s so happy with her. She never pushes or pressures him to do anything with her, and he knows that he’s in love with her. Then Mirage happens, and it all comes rushing back. He feels so stupid for not noticing again. He feels the weight of Jason and Tim’s words all the time. By the time Blockbuster and Catalina happen, he’s barely hanging on by a thread. Damian helps him pick up the pieces, and helps heal a bit, but it’s hard when he’s still constantly getting slut shamed and blamed by everyone around him. So one day he just snaps at them and tells them what really happened, and by the time he’s finished he’s panting and crying and both of them look a mix between horrified and constipated. He runs off, and can distantly hear the sounds of Damian starting in on them as well when they try to follow him.
I always forget about the Liu situation and it always makes me So So Sad.
Damian would never forgive the others for not realizing what was happening with Dick, and for actively making the whole situation worse.
I saw a proposal of a Dr Damien in House MD but I raise that as Dr Damien being the House MD of the Superhero community.
No nonsense. Can sus a lie a mile away. Sharp tongue. Will roast you for your stupidity but will also protect your secrets as long as you're not hurting anyone else.
The idea of Flamebird becoming Dr Flamebird for the JL is actually so funny.
Then after he adopts Dick, he’s just even more ruthless.
“My eight year old is more apt at describing his injuries than you are,” kinda insults.
“You called me in for this? What do you want me to do, put a bandaid on it? I have Superman bandaids for my third grader, would you like one of those?”
“It’s not broken. It’s not even sprained,” Damian huffs, snapping off his gloves and getting up to leave. “If it hurts, ice it. And maybe next time, don’t jump off a building.”
When he sits across from a sniffly, coughing adult hero, he lets out the most frustrated sigh. “I’m a surgeon,” he says. “Are you actively bleeding? Do you have a knife embedded in your abdomen? Is a bone sticking out of your body? No? Then don’t call me for the sniffles. Go pick up some Theraflu.”
I think when the fab five first move into Titans Tower as teenagers during their teenage rebellion phase, the others absolutely make fun of Dick for having a million stupid expensive hair care products.
Meanwhile Dick just scoffs at them like, “uh yeah DUH my dad is Bruce Wayne, of course I’m going to have fancy shampoo and hair gel.”
Then they all steal from him because they realize the stuff he uses is expensive for a reason; it smells good and it works well and half his absurd collection goes missing within a week.
And that’s how Bruce Wayne starts funding the fab five’s grooming products without even knowing about it. Dick just orders it all on one of the credit cards he gave him “for emergencies.”
The fab five, ages approximately 12-15, discussing a way to get back at their mentors for smth stupid:
“I propose a hunger strike!” Dick suggests.
“I can’t do hunger strikes,” Wally says immediately. “I get really hungry around 4 o’clock if I don’t have a snack.”

i love making the age gaps between the batkids ridiculously small bc it’s kinda funny.
like imagine dick being 16 when a 13 year old jason comes around, and then when dick is 18 jason dies, only to be replaced by a 14 year old tim (who’s one year younger than jason) then when dick is like 20 damian shows up, and then when dick is finally old enough to drink legally, bruce dies and makes him a father/mentor to the 10 year old gremlin he left behind. imagine a 21 year old dick trying to manage the insurmountable beef between a 10 year old damian and 17 year old tim and trying to be batman and run a company that he has no idea how to run. dick has been doing this shit for 13 years but he suddenly feels both too old and too young for all of this shit. it’s even funnier if bruce is only in his mid-to-late 30s cuz imagine being stuck in the timestream and when you get back, your son, who’s in his early 20s, just immediately fucking launches himself at you to hug you for not dying and to beat the shit out of you for leaving him alone to deal with all your shit.
Freshly turned 21 year old Dick just wants to party with the Titans and drink white claws and get shitfaced off strawberry lemonade svedka, and instead he’s forced to take care of all his dad’s gremlin kids and run his stupid company.
“I was supposed to be a party boy!!!” he yell/cries as he hugs/strangles newly-returned Bruce. “And you made me be a TEEN DAD!!!!”
“You’re 22, Dick,” Bruce chokes out.
“AND YOU LEFT ME WITH YOUR HOARD OF KIDS AND A WHOLE ASS COMPANY!!!” Dick shouts, strangling Bruce Homer Simpson style. “I WAS SUPPOSED TO SPEND MY 21ST YEAR BEING DAY DRUNK BY A POOL!”
After the rest of their tearful reunion that’s full of hugs and apologies, Dick takes a drag of a cigarette that Roy hands him as he lounges by the pool at Titans Tower.
“Roy,” he says, really dragging it out, “be a lamb and get me a vodka cranberry.”
“That’s kind of a girly drink, don’t ya think–”
“GET ME A VODKA CRANBERRY, ROY!”
“Jeez, jeez, fine!” Roy huffs.
“Make that two!” Donna calls after him as she flips over on her lounger next to Dick’s.
“This is the life,” Dick says, choking back tears. He’s so damn glad Bruce is back.
I think toddler Damian joining the family way early could be hilarious if Dick is just immediately all for it, he’s super duper happy, gives Bruce absolutely no issues with suddenly having a toddler in the house and no longer being an only child.
And it’s bc Dick sees Bruce fussing over this 3 year old new little brother of his and immediately thinks, “Excellent, excellent. I can now be a teenage dirtbag and Bruce will be too busy with the baby to give me shit for it.”
Like don’t get me wrong, Dick would still adore Damian. They’re pals. Dick takes to hang out with his friends and to the toy store and the park and plays with him, but he also takes full advantage of Bruce now being distracted by a baby. Damian is 3. Dick is 13ish. Dick now has So Much Freedom.
AND Bruce has given him a credit card “for emergencies” that he will absolutely never look at the bill for, which means Dick can now buy an absurd amount of large Zesti Colas from BatBurger whenever he wants.
And thus the Titans are born. Damian is their mascot the first couple years.
Imagine a dimension hopping scenario tho where normal Batfam ends up in this universe, and maybe they somehow wind up in the manor while Dick is babysitting Damian. They’re still 13 and 3. The others assume this must be a universe where Bruce gets all the kids way earlier than normal.
And Dick, staring at all of them while activating an emergency beacon that’s connected to both Bruce and Clark’s communicators, slowly pushes Damian behind him.
“So who are you guys?” Dick asks slowly, keeping his voice pleasant as he looks at these costumed strangers.
“What, you don’t recognize your own brother?” Jason teases him.
Dick stares at him. Slowly pulls Damian back around in front of him. Holds him up by his armpits so he can look at Damian’s pouting face and compare it to the Red Hood helmet. He slowly pulls Damian to his chest, keeping a tight grip on him.
Then he asks in the most concerned tone he can muster, “Are you on crack?”
Jason sputters while the others try not to outright laugh.
And then Dick uses their distraction to run to Bruce’s office and hide in the Batcave with Damian.
He was not expecting the others to be able open the clock to follow them down, and now he’s standing in front of Damian and holding up his birdarangs as threateningly as possible, his utility belt clipped across his torso, all while he tells Damian as gently but as firmly as possible, “Stay behind brother.”
“Where are the others?” Tim asks.
“What others?” Dick asks, starting to sound frazzled.
Then the others look around the Batcave, and they realize there’s no signs of any other kids. And they realize they’re essentially terrifying a little teenage version of their oldest brother who’s trying very hard to stay calm for a toddler version of Damian.
Some cute father-son ideas I think about a lot for Bruce and Dick
Bruce styles Dick’s hair every single morning before school. It started when he first adopted Dick and Dick was nervous to go to a real school for the first time since he’d been homeschooled when he lived in the circus, so Bruce combed his hair just like his to help him feel better. It worked, and Bruce continued doing it every day after that. It was just a normal part of their morning routine
Bruce also always ties Dick’s ties, even when he becomes an adult. It was usually just for his school uniform, but then occasionally if he needed to dress nice for an event. If they’re getting ready together for an event where Dick needs to wear a tie, Bruce ties it. But he can only tie ties from the perspective of doing it for himself, so he would always just grabs Dick’s shoulders, turn him around and pull Dick’s back to his chest, and rest his chin on Dick’s head so he could tie his tie for him. This became slightly more difficult when Dick got taller, but Bruce persists bc that’s his little boy and he will tie his tie for him.
Dick maybe had some separation anxiety when he first was adopted, and it manifested in the absolute need to sleep in Bruce’s bed. There was never any other option. Dick has a bedroom with all his toys and things and a very nice bed that always has clean sheets, but he never sleeps in it. This continues until Dick is maybe 12/13ish. After that, he might occasionally sleep in Bruce’s bed if he’s feeling particularly clingy, or he might convince Bruce to stay in Dick’s room for the night. This mostly happens if he’s really sick or injured. It once happened when Dick got super drunk shortly after his 21st birthday and Bruce was worried about him (he was fine, he just had too many shots).
Bruce always packed Dick’s school lunch. Alfred might cook their main meals, but Bruce loved packing school lunches. He was a little sad when Dick stopped using a themed lunchbox in 7th grade and started using a brown paper bag instead, but then was so happy when Dick decided to use a lunchbox again his senior year that he conveniently ignored that it was Superman themed.
They like watching corny d-rated sci-fi films. It’s their thing. Movies like Sharktopus vs Pteracuda, Megashark vs Crocosaurus, and 2-Headed Shark Attack (they really like the bad Shark movies specifically bc they’re always ridiculous). When The Meg came out in theaters, they were first in line with big buckets of popcorn. It was so bad it was good. Once the others join the family, none of them understand the fascination with the bad shark movies.
Dick adores whenever Bruce calls him chum. It’s his special nickname, Bruce doesn’t use it for anyone else. When he’d first adopted Dick, he’d told him one night when Dick was very upset and missing his parents how his dad used to call him chum, and now Dick was his chum, and it’s something Dick has never forgotten. If anyone ever tries to make fun of Bruce calling him chum, Dick gets very overprotective about the nickname and tears whoever tried to make fun of him a new one.
Dick sometimes would call Bruce chum right back. Usually when it was something a little silly, like Bruce apologizing for something with “I’m sorry, chum,” and Dick would say right back, “That’s alright, chum,” because it would always make Bruce smile.
Dick played pretend a lot when Bruce first adopted him, and Bruce bought all sorts of play sets and toys for him. And Bruce got so into, and the two of them would play silly make believe games together.
They had a system when Dick was still young where if one of them wanted to leave a charity event or smth early, Dick would pretend to fall asleep. Usually on Bruce’s shoulder. And then Bruce would apologize profusely about needing to get his sweet little baby home to bed, it’s so late, he really must be going, and then Alfred would drive them home while they giggle in the back seat about deceiving everyone, and they’d eat ice cream when they got home while watching a bad shark movie.
Idk I’m sure there are more but this is what I’m thinking abt tonight at least. I love them your honor
Once when Dick is like 25, he whines and complains while everyone is getting ready for a Martha Wayne Foundation gala for Bruce to tie his tie for him. And Bruce, a little frazzled from trying to corral all his kids, just takes the tie from Dick and puts it around his own neck to tie it, then loosens it and hands it back to Dick.
And Dick stares at him, totally flabbergasted. Because Bruce has never once done that ever. He always ties it while it’s already around Dick’s neck. And when Bruce notices the crestfallen look on Dick’s face, he gets so worried but confused and is just like, “What? Is that not the kind of knot you wanted?”
Dick blinks once. Twice. Then whines dramatically, “You didn’t tie it while I was wearing it!”
The others all think Dick is being melodramatic, or that he’s just trying to irritate Bruce, but Bruce sees the way his lips pout just slightly, and he knows Dick is actually upset.
So he takes the tie back, unties it, then pulls Dick to his chest so he can look over Dick’s shoulder as he re-ties it.
Dick gets such a smug look on his face the entire time, and none of the others know what the fuck is happening.
“There you go, chum,” Bruce says once he’s done, and he turns Dick back around to straighten the knot.
“Thanks, chum!”
Bruce can’t stop the big stupid smile that spreads across his face, because he’s instantly reminded of the little eight year old who used to say exactly that every time Bruce tied his tie for him. Then he gets so nostalgic, because he used to make Dick stand on the bed or sit on the bathroom counter so he could tie his tie, so he wouldn’t have to bend down so far because Dick had been so teeny tiny, and now he’s so big and grown up.
So anyway I think Bruce tying Dick’s tie is their weird love language and they both take it very seriously.
au where Dick secretly just pulls a legally blonde and becomes a lawyer for no real reason, except no one even knew he finished college, let alone got accepted to and graduated from law school (he went to Harvard after applying for shits and giggles – Alfred was so proud of him at his graduation).
Then somehow it comes up years later when he’s working with several other JL heroes on a joint case, and he uses either some lawyer connection or just his general knowledge as a lawyer to help them crack the case.
And when everyone looks at him like he’s grown a second head, he gets so confused.
“Did you guys not know I was a lawyer?” he asks, tilting his head.
“You’re a what?”
“A lawyer,” he repeats. “I work in-house for the Gotham Knights, actually.”
He was so excited when his favorite baseball team hired him. He may not be able to go pro in any of his favorite sports for vigilante reasons, but being one of the lawyers for his favorite team is a nice consolation prize. He may have thrown Bruce’s name around a bit to get the interview in the first place, but it’s worked well for him.
“You have a real job?” someone asks. “I thought you were a professional trust fund baby.”
“Why does everyone always think that,” he mutters under his breath.
“Wait, wait,” one of his siblings asks. “Since when are you a lawyer?”
“Since I passed the bar exam.”
“When did you pass the bar exam?”
“After I graduated law school.”
“Your answers are not answering anything, dickhead!”
Meanwhile, Bruce is just in the corner so upset. He’s nearly pouting. How did he not know Dick went to law school? Or became a lawyer? A dad should know these things, why didn’t he know these things!
Dick is a little bummed he can’t keep this secret anymore. He’s even more bummed when Bruce realizes where Dick’s season tickets for the Gotham Knights came from. Bruce thought Dick had been using one of his credit cards to pay for them, and now he’s insisting that he needs to find a way to compensate Dick for all the games they’ve gone to together the last few years.
Bad grandpa Alfred au, With how petty Dick is he makes sure that the cake flavor that he gets is something that Alfred despises and will never bother trying to taste.
Maybe from that first birthday in the manor, Bruce has taken Dick to that same bakery so they can eat the cake together there. It’s their little tradition. Even when the others joined the family, it was always just Dick and Bruce. Maybe the others never even realize it’s Dick’s birthday.
Then the year everyone thinks Bruce is dead, Dick takes Damian with him and tells him how it was his special tradition with Bruce. Dick then does the same with Damian on Damian’s birthday, and he tells Bruce about it when he gets back so Bruce can continue it (except Damian wants Dick to come with them as well, so then Damian always joins for Dick’s birthday too).
Then one year, the other siblings realize they never celebrate Dick’s birthday, and they insist on having a family party at the manor. Someone, Jason perhaps, insists that Alfred will make the best birthday cake for Dick.
Dick damn near snorts, but he keeps himself under control.
So Dick orders himself his usual cake just like he always does, and he picks it up before the scheduled party at the manor. Maybe Alfred is just weird and has a superiority complex so he doesn’t eat things like that if someone has purchased them, he only eats homemade cake. Something stupid like that, so Dick knows Alfred won’t even want to touch it.
So when everyone is getting ready to sing happy birthday and they start realizing there’s no cake and Alfred isn’t moving to bring one, Dick gets a very “I told you so” look on his face. He absolutely knew this was going to happen. Meanwhile, Bruce is panicking just like he did on Dick’s first birthday with him when he realized there was no cake. Bruce is about to grab his car keys and drive Dick to the bakery for their usual tradition when Dick gets up, goes to one of their extra refrigerators that’s usually just for drinks, and pulls out the bakery box.
“You bought your own birthday cake?” Bruce asks, his voice so sad as he starts putting the candles in it. “Chum, I would’ve gone and gotten it for you.”
“Well I knew Alfred wouldn’t make me one,” Dick says offhandedly, and Alfred’s lips thin out as he glares at Dick. “So I just came prepared. But I like our usual tradition better, B.”
Bruce is so confused, as are his siblings.
“What do you mean you knew Alfred wouldn’t make you one?” Bruce asks, because maybe things are starting to click into place.
And Dick wants to tell Bruce. He wants to make him realize just how awful Alfred has been to him the last however-many years. But he sees the gutted look on Bruce’s face and realizes this isn’t the time or the place to do that.
“Can you just sing me happy birthday so we can eat it like we normally do?” he asks quietly. He pulls out a bag of little plastic forks he grabbed from the bakery, and Bruce laughs, even if it’s a little weak
“Of course, chum,” Bruce says softly, pushing back Dick’s hair and giving him a little kiss on the head.
And when they’re done singing happy birthday, Bruce swipes a finger along the frosting and taps it on the end of Dick’s nose, just like he’s always done since Dick’s first birthday with him. And he laughs as Dick’s face scrunches up, as Dick starts laughing along with him, and they eat from the cake with the little plastic forks without cutting any slices, just like they always do.
His siblings (aside from Damian) are all a little confused and maybe even a little annoyed, but they take a bite before insisting on presents.
Maybe Bruce has hushed words with Alfred when he realizes Alfred didn’t get Dick a gift, when he realizes Alfred didn’t help with any of Dick’s birthday plans at all, that he never has.
Maybe Dick tells Bruce the extent of Alfred’s treatment towards him later that night, and Bruce has never felt more guilty in his entire life.

Was watching Keeping Up Appearances and this line is cracking me up and I need everyone to just imagine Dick saying it at a gala in front of a bunch of socialites:
“How awful to lose one’s daddy just before a cheese and wine,” Dick says dramatically, using a little toothpick to pickup a square of cheese while he sways his wine glass in the other hand.
Bruce left earlier that afternoon to go to a meeting in London for WE. Dick is just being dramatic because he’s now forced to be the oldest Wayne at this annoying Gotham gala.
All the other Batkids in attendance are giggling, but mainly because Dick has now made all the socialites think Bruce died.
They all send Bruce news articles about his supposed death the next morning. Bruce is not amused.
grandpa bruce is very near and dear to my heart. he needs to make his kids suffer by spoiling the grandkids rotten. tim is calling bruce like "i hate you so much why would you give my kid a DRUM SET!?!?!?". Jason is livid that his child comes home from Pop Pop's demanding to watch more cocomelon. Dick is exhausted from spending all night chasing around his toddler who is hopped up on sugar and an unauthorized midday nap. Bruce sleeps like a baby tho, knowing he finally has revenge for all the gray hairs those kids have given him.
Grandpa Bruce spoiling the absolute shit out of all his grandkids, sending them all home sugared up and with the most obnoxious toys known to man, then sleeping like a baby with a proud smile on his face is cracking me up.
The others are all screaming or swearing or muttering under the breath, but then Dick just stands there watching his little pride and joy be a spoiled rotten little brat with a nostalgic look on his face.
“Oh, I suppose Bruce did spoil me as a kid, didn’t he?” he says to himself. Because this is exactly the sort of shit Bruce used to do with him. Poor Alfred, having to put up with the both of them all those years. They were menaces together.
“Oh, my little Robin!” Dick calls out to his child. “Should we go to Uncle Jason’s house and bring all our loud toys to show your cousin? We can have a sleepover!”
Bruce had fun sugaring them up and sending them home, but Dick will have fun riling them all up even more with his own kid as an instigator for even more chaos. He’s sure to spread the love around all his siblings and nieces and nephews; tonight is Jason’s turn.
