Nice was not a word Ai’d ever been called, and she was curious what about her gave off the impression, not that she was offended by the word.
It was strange, the way people here gave others things like flowers, but Ai at least understood the intended kindness behind it and accepted, taking the rose from the girl. And truly, it was pleasant to look at. Ai twirled it in her hand, feeling the softness of the petals.
“Thank you.” She said, letting her hands fall to her sides but still holding the flower. “Are you always out here…doing magic?” The demon couldn’t recall having seen her before, though it wasn’t impossible.
“Aw, ye don’ need te thank me, miss. Just statin’ t’truth s’all.” Phoebe replied rather cheerfully. At the question, Phoebe blinked once. “Well, I guess that depends on yer definition o’ ‘ere. I usually go aroun’ the isle an’ perform aroun’ t’place. S’ow I generally make money. Enough te pay t’bills at least.”
Phoebe waved an arm, gesturing around them. She had chosen a spot this time that would garner a bit more traffic flow, especially during lunch time. Even after the performance, there were still enough people going about their business that if she wanted to, she could probably try and do another quick show.
“S’not glamorous, I s’pose, but I like it!” Phoebe tilted her head towards the other. “What about ye, miss? I don’ think I’ve seen ye before.”
“I see.” Ai nodded, before adding, “You’re very good. Like someone in a circus.”
She noticed the people still walking by as well, and wondered if the girl was missing out on an opportunity to make more money by speaking with her. She hoped she hadn’t interrupted.
“I’ve been around as well. I don’t talk with very many people.” Ai said softly and lifted her shoulders in a small shrug. “My name is Ai.”

There was magic in the air. Or magic on the street really, being done by a girl with red hair. Ai assumed it was for money, and though it did feel like stealing watching such a performance for free, she had nothing on her. She rarely spent money when she went to this world, as she needed so little here. So she hid in the shadow of a building, watching carefully. The tricks were delightful, she supposed. The girl was very good, and Ai saw a few people give her money, which did make her glad.
Ai had been doing this during most of her time here, fascinated by the residents of this place. There was no shortage of pain here, but she’d not been focused on her work as much. No one had summoned her, and she felt no true calling to go to anyone yet. So she observed, and took note of the people.
Even if she had gotten a real job, she couldn’t deny the delight she felt each time she performed. That, and the smile on people’s faces reminded her of home. There wasn’t the blinding lights, the humming in the air, the suspense fueled on by drums, but it was good enough.
As people slowly trickled away after her small performance ended, Phoebe stretched. She scooped up her headdress which had been used to collect the crowd’s money. Or, at least, the money of those that were willing to give it. With a content hum, she lifted her head and peered in the direction of the building whose shade did its best to hide the onlooker.
“You could have gotten closer, you know! I don’t bite!”
Phoebe offered a friendly, and hopefully inviting, smile in the girl’s direction. She had noticed her not too long after she had arrived, between the cards jumping in the air and the one-handed handstand upon the top of a chair. It certainly wasn’t unusual for there to be those too nervous to join the crowd.
Ai hadn’t meant to grab the girl’s attention. The demon had grown accustom to observing from afar, and had intended to disperse when the rest of the crowd did, probably to find something else interesting to watch for the night. She stepped back a little, reflexively trying to blend into the dark, before reconsidering it and walking forward, with a nod of acknowledgement at the performer.
She stood a few feet in front of her, before deciding to say something. “...your tricks were nice.”
