i love percy & annabeth’s relationship because it exemplifies the principle of agency in human relations so well. they weren’t meant to be soulmates (they literally weren’t) but they grew to basically be soulmates through trials and conflict and sheer staying power and i think that’s way more compelling than a convenient “(not gonna explain how or why but) they were always meant to be” narrative. they had to build their friendship from scratch and that’s why it’s so robust. they aren’t bound together by some invisible, inaccessible divine force that does all the work for them; they’re bonded by years of shared experiences, fallouts, woes and joys that they have had to work through together without the top-down mechanics of teleological predetermination. predestination removes skin in the game, and percy and annabeth are all about skin in the game
