you are a cornucopia of resilience.

your basket weaved in all black

mourning the taste of rain,

refusing to bend to 100 degree heat.

you are the fire that tries to destroy you;

winged black eyeliner sleek like slick oil;

vengeful wishes planted in your salted soil.

you steal all the luck from your desert’s horseshoe.

you are the solitary mountain lion;

the coyote running wild in suburbia;

a jack rabbit sprinting across invasive lawns;

the bat flying through the night.

you know what stars look like;

the milky way your compass;

beyond your city walls;

beyond the desert void.

desert emo girl, you’ve grown up,

your roots molten lava.

at the edges of joshua tree spikes,

you know what rains taste like.

you are a brave one,

strong and sturdy,

like a gentle poppy,

that blooms in spring.

flourish in your well-deserved green.
