it's not lady; it's doctor

                 he didn’t even try not to grin. gutsy – not everyone would happily mess with a cop. he liked her. lifting his eyebrows inquisitively, he turned back to the vending machine and considered her question.    “  well, i mean the selection’s overwhelming. a guy could spend all day deciding, y’know?  ”    he said dryly.    “  i mean, we’ve got ham & cheese, egg salad, turkey… how about this –  ”    he crossed his arms over his chest, and shot her a teasing look. he was having too much fun avoiding what he was supposed to be doing.    “  you tell me – in your professional opinion – which one’s not gonna kill me and i’ll go with that.  ”

        Leave it to Charlie to sense that something wasn’t quite right. She’d been more than a little frantic when she’d finally spotted him, so much so that the fact that he was wearing scrubs and surgical gear didn’t even register. Fortunately, the sound of his voice brought her back to her senses a little bit, though her heart was still racing. “ Yeah, ”  she responded quickly, allowing herself a deep breath. When she spoke again, her voice was a little stronger. “ Yeah. I just... Someone said there’d been a car accident and, practically in the same breath, that you were in the O.R. and I just... ”  Alex let out a shaky laugh, reaching up to rub her forehead. “ I panicked. ”  And now she was feeling ridiculous.

        “ Ah... well that would explain all of the smoke, ”  she quipped in return. She even contemplated a dramatic cough, but figured it’d probably be a little too dorky of her. The dorky thing was more Charlie’s angle than hers. “ What can I say, Officer?  The stomach wants what the stomach wants. ”  Even as she said it, her nose scrunched a little; it wasn’t the most nutritious or delicious lunch, but desperate times called for desperate measures. She was due in surgery in about half an hour, and it was better to eat something out of the machine than to have nothing at all. “ Alright, ”  she said after a moment, crossing her arms and peering thoughtfully into the machine. “ What are your options?  I’ll try to give you my professional opinion. ”

The Lynx.

The Lynx is an animal familiar with incredibly sharp senses, observing the environment carefully and knowing the perfect time to pounce on prey. In the same way, you too are very observant of the world around you, and don't let anything slip past you. Even if you aren't exactly a human lie-detector (or maybe you are), you put trust in your intuition and instincts. If you have that feeling that something seems seriously off in an environment, you always prepare yourself in case danger does arise. A Lynx familiar protects their master by discerning liars, sharpening their senses, and detecting danger in the area.

        Her mind was full as she stepped into her apartment, setting her things off to the side. Normally, she would have had a glass of wine to take the edge off of a stressful situation, but that wasn’t an option now. Fortunately, there was something else to distract her from her worries. Alex nearly jumped out of her skin as she caught movement out of the corner of her eye, first thinking that Maggie had managed to sneak up on her, only to find out that her company was someone much different.

        “ Luke. ”  Her tone held a great deal of surprise, but happiness and maybe even a hint of relief as well. “ What are you doing here? Did Maggie let you in? ”  She hoped so; otherwise, she’d have some serious security issues to take care of before the baby arrived. But despite her confusion, Alex flashed a smile at her brother, stepping forward and wrapping her arms around him. “ But what  ---  are you okay? Did something happen? Don’t tell me you need more money. ”

        If anyone had asked him, he wouldn’t have been able to say how long he’d been sitting there. Time had pretty much come to a screeching halt from the second it happened. Well, not entirely. There had been those hours together in… wherever the hell it was spirits existed. Smiling. Talking about the future. And it was closer than they’d been in months –  in the middle of that heart-stopping panic, they’d had each other. And now… Now she just had to wake up. Wake up and come back to him. 

        At the sound of his name, his head shot up and for a second, he could barely believe what he was hearing.  “ Alex? ”  Sure enough – there she was. Eyes open. Looking at him. Alive and smiling. He let out a shaky breath and soon a smile of his own was splitting his face so much it hurt.  “ Hey… ”  he said softly. He knew he had to look like a total disaster. But that didn’t matter now. Scooting closer to her bed, he reached for her hand. For a moment, all he could do was look at her.  “ You disappeared for a second there… ”

        It felt a bit like she was moving and thinking in slow motion, but even in her haze, Alex could see that this ordeal had taken a toll on him. He looked exhausted, eyes red and perhaps a little swollen, circles underneath. She recalled a time when the roles had been reversed, when she had been the distraught one waiting around for good news. Things were different now, though. They were no longer engaged, no longer even together. And yet... he’d stayed with her.

        Her gaze wandered from his face to her hand in his. She had to admit that the gesture brought some much needed comfort to her, even if it was a simple one. “ Yeah... but I came back, ”  she responded quietly, traces of a smile tugging at one corner of her lips. Slowly, Alex tried to sit up ( just laying there made her feel strange, almost useless ), but the pain that shot through her chest warned her not to push her limits. Features scrunched, she reluctantly settled back into her original position.
