âMoving, movingâŚâ Sighed Wheatley, exiting the room and holding the door open for his companion.
âBut youâre the one whoâs deluding themselves, luv. Iâm completely mechanical. Wires and circuitboards and things. I mean, itâs brilliant you think Iâm so realistic, but I am not like you.â He said, looking around to get his bearings again. The injury had thrown off his sense of direction momentarily.Â
She trudged through the door with an annoyed groan crossed with a growl, fists balled tightly at her sides. âYouâre not a damned machine! Machines canât walk and talk and have opinions on things! I canât be the only living thing here.âÂ
couldgetabittechnical:
Wheatley held his hand in the air for an uncomfortably long time before taking the hint, and casually moved it to smooth back his hair.
âLike I said, dissassembly, reassembly, repair tube, er, thingie.â He knocked on it a couple times. âBrilliant, eh? Iâm brilliant! Fit as a fiddlestick and all that! Being, yâknow⌠Like I said, Iâm mechanical⌠The bullets mostly ah⌠Messed up a bit of my circuitry⌠Couldâve gone a little⌠Wooooâ he twirled his finger up by the side of his head. âthere, but thatâs all fixed now!
Er⌠You werenât hit, were you? Afraid they didnât em⌠Have quite as much on repairing humans here⌠Not quite as big an investment as machines, seeâŚâÂ
That... That could be useful. If either of them got hurt, reassembly machines would put them back together. While she hated the idea of relying on technology for repair, even worse was the thought of dying in this place.Â
âYouâre not a damn machine, Wheatley,â he hissed, âStop deluding yourself. Now letâs go. Lead the way.âÂ
The floor dilated open at his feet, and the android dropped like a floppy capsule in a pneumatic pipe, dropping, quite fortunately, out of sight as automated machinery gripped him for repair.
Quite unfortunately, he was still near enough to be heard. Ominous whirring and sparking, and one voice yelping, taking the situation as far more intense than it really was. Then again, metal claws were partially taking him apart, but it was something that should be typical to the life of an Aperture machine.Â
It was less than a minute later that Wheatley popped back up into sight, stepping out of the tube casually, eyes bright and wearing a chipper grin as he brushed at the arms of his new jumpsuit. It was the same as the old, standard issue, but with blue accentuation.
âThere! That should be eh, everything back in order.â He tapped his fingertips together, making sure he had the same amount of control as previously. âGlad that thing was still working.â He jerked his thumb back at the repair station , which dimmed as it shut down. âHah! Weâd be in a right mess if it wasnât⌠I mean, it was possible. Whole facilityâs dying. But not us!â He put a hand up, hoping the odd girl knew what a high five was, at least.
Cade regretted her decision the moment any pained sounds were involved, Wheatleyâs yelps under the mechanical tune of machines ripping something to pieces. Maybe she should just run. Right now. Pack her metaphorical bags and skip her way out of this place. Clearly, Wheatley was dead--Â
Or standing right in front of her. Okay. That works, too.Â
Though she knew Wheatley wouldnât and couldnât hurt her, Cade instinctively took a leap back when his hand raised. She was familiar with high-fives but refused to return his.Â
Her confusion and disorientation masked itself as anger. âWhat the HELL was that!? Youâre okay!?âÂ
âIf thatâs what⌠Erf⌠F-floats your boatâŚâ Wheatley gave up on trying to convince her he was an android, for the moment.Â
He leaned his head up to see the ransacked room. Oh, for crying out loudâŚ
âGot it under control, thanksâŚâ He rolled himself off the table with a whump, and started scooting himself towards a nearby disassembly shaft. This proved tricky, so he simply continued to roll. The core scrunched himself into the narrow tube, the walls being quite helpful in keeping him upright. He gave a thumbs-up and a slightly twitchy grin, before nodding to a nearby red button.
âThis sh-sh⌠Shh⌠Shhhhhhh⌠ShhhhoushhshhâŚâ He shook his head, the word was quite stuck, it seemed. âCan fi-fix everythingâŚâ
How crazy was this guy that he thought a tube would be the answer to their current problems? And how crazy was this building that he might actually be correct about that?Â
She followed his gesture to the button, staring at it for a while before getting any closer.Â
âIf this thing kills you,â she growled, âYou canât blame me for it.âÂ
With no other options, she slammed her fist down on the red button.Â

âI know how you feel, lady. Out and about, looking for a purpose⌠Youâve come to the right place by running out into the woods.â She nodded. âIâve seen a thousand deer, even pet âem when Crookâs too asleep to kill them. Pet foxes, too. Even a wolf once.âÂ
-Youâve pet a wolf? Whatâs that like?-
âLike a dog with more fleas.â She grinned and splashed Chell with a kick at the river. âBet you canât catch one of these fish with your bare hand!âÂ
chell-master-of-the-portal-gun:
-I reguret leaving. Theyâre still there. Doing well the last time I saw them.-Â
-it just wasnât the right place. Sure it was niceâŚbut she held no purpose.-
-I havenât. Have you?-
âI know how you feel, lady. Out and about, looking for a purpose... Youâve come to the right place by running out into the woods.â She nodded. âIâve seen a thousand deer, even pet âem when Crookâs too asleep to kill them. Pet foxes, too. Even a wolf once.âÂ
âLucky stallions, if the only mare was a clydesdale.â She snickered. âGood to hear it was family and not some stupid slave-driving racetrack breeder farm or something.âÂ
-Yes. They loved their horses. They werenât just property to them.- a small sigh. She drew a quick, simple sketch of one of the horses. Long flowing mane, well brushed and bright, happy eyes. -I miss them.-
âWhat happened to âem? Or dâyou just regret leaving?â She scooted a bit closer to make reading the notes easier as well as to keep a better eye on Crook, who was scouring treetops for birdsâ nests. âPretty mare. Youâll like it better out here, though. Ever seen a deer up close?âÂ
ââScute. What kinds of horses? Did they breed something specific or they were just a family ranch?âÂ
-Family ranch. Mostly stallions. Had a clydsdale, too.-
âLucky stallions, if the only mare was a clydesdale.â She snickered. âGood to hear it was family and not some stupid slave-driving racetrack breeder farm or something.âÂ
âMe, too. You take care of horses often? Or perhaps giant carnivorous reptiles?âÂ
-Horses. Lived on a ranch for a few months once. It was nice. I liked the different animals, except maybe for the sheepdog. Not one for dogs. The horses were my favorite though.-

âCrookâs always hungry and she wants to eat just about everything, you included. Last time I saw her so calm, though, weâd both been up for two days. This isnât right.âÂ
-Strange. Hope sheâs okay.-
âMe, too. You take care of horses often? Or perhaps giant carnivorous reptiles?âÂ
âYeah, probably somewhere, but sheâs such a rare animal I have no idea what to give her. Were she human or a dog or something I could help no problem, butâŚa goddamn lizard-horse?âÂ
-True.- ah. So Crook wasnât a common animal, even here? -Maybe sheâs hungry? She was looking at the birds like she wanted them.-
âCrookâs always hungry and she wants to eat just about everything, you included. Last time I saw her so calm, though, weâd both been up for two days. This isnât right.âÂ
-I hope she's okay. Is there any medicine we could give her?-
âYeah, probably somewhere, but sheâs such a rare animal I have no idea what to give her. Were she human or a dog or something I could help no problem, but...a goddamn lizard-horse?âÂ
She grabbed the reins again and took charge of their destination, leading the group towards the closest river, pulling Crook to a halt the moment they arrived.Â
Shimmering silver water, clear blue skies above, fish visible underneath. Cade had to keep her mare from eating a family of swans.Â
Chell watched them, fragile, fleeting life just under the surface. Fish. And birds, tiny chicks that in all likelihood wouldnât survive until adulthood. Even if they did, they held no purpose but to lend their genetic code to their young. A code that would slowly degrade until there was nothing left of what it once was. And that was just here. One world out of countless others. -Its beautiful here.-
âIsnât it? Donât get your paper wet.âÂ
Cade stayed on Crookâs back, a tight grip on the reins holding her back from killing the birds.Â
âYou can hop off if you want. Take off your boots and such. I gotta stay up here and make sure Crook doesnât do anything stupid.âÂ
-Okay. Thank you.-Â
She hopped back off, as if she hadnât seen such things before. The boots came off without the slightest hassle, and though the wave of dizziness was nauseating, she walked fine without them. She left them by a tree and knelt by the water, watching the fish without getting too close. Her notepad clutched tightly to her chest, keeping it out of harms way. She liked fish. They lived in a world she couldnât survive in. Despite her apparent distraction, she was listening intently, paying keen attention to the horse. A finger brushed lightly against the black band around her wrist, a part of her waiting to be attacked, though she was hoping it wouldnât come to that.Â
The swan family realized that the steed staring them down was no ordinary equine and swam away, further down the riverbank. Crook knew well that she couldnât swim if her life depended on it and gave up going after them. She sat down, giving Cade no option but to slide off and land on her ass.Â
Cade stood and watched her beast with concern, how motionless and obedient she was being. She raised an eyebrow, received a glare, and left to sit next to Chell. âThink she might be getting sick... Remind me to check for a fever later.âÂ

Cade misunderstood the gesture. âWoah, donât sleep yet, itâs hardly afternoon!âÂ
She opened her eyes again, gaze unfocused, distant. After a moment, she straightened up and watched the trees pass by, anything to apease her current partner.

âCade.â She patted her steedâs neck. âThis is Crook.âÂ
-Itâs nice to meet you both.- She closed her eyes and leaned against Cades back, not a sign of physical exhaustion, but an emotional one.
