As the Blue Moon Reaches Its Apex...
Yearning beguiles in quiet places Sweet memory, the heart embraces Desire — lo, you incense bewitched; a flame that consumes to the wick!
WHAT'S HAPPENING?
Small stone statues have been spotted in liminal areas, secluded ruins, and overgrown wilds, each bearing an ornate lantern with a candle inside.
Meanwhile, the portal-like rifts that appear over Traverse Trove warp and writhe above the skies of the Merchant District. Multi-dimensional objects spew from the rifts in greater abundance than ever before! Before, suddenly, each and every rift blinks out of sight.
The rifts are not gone, however. Within days, hours, even minutes, the rifts appear again, but this time, they are no longer bound to the confines of the Trove. The rifts are far, far larger than before, each one appearing around the stone statues whose candle has been lit.
Through these rifts, fragments of the worlds beyond the Aevum Isles fall through, spilling out otherworldly threats, plants, animals, and even warping the areas around the rift to mirror the land it expels.
THE WICKIDS.
The Wickids are short statues that are said to bring good fortune and grant the innermost desires of anyone who lights the lantern in its hands.
When an Echo does so, a manifestation of their deepest desires, nostalgia, and homesickness become reality, often pulled through space-time by the Aether as a response to strong emotion, and each linked directly to a Wickid Rift. As more of the statues' lanterns are lit, the rifts grow larger and the effect grows stronger, allowing for the Echoes to regain pieces of their homeworlds that were otherwise lost to them.
WICKID APPEARANCES.
Wickids are a statue no larger than 3ft tall. The appear as simple carvings of a child-like figure wearing a large, witch hat. It sits with its knees drawn to its chest, holding a lantern in its hands.
Initially, the lantern’s door is held open. When approached, the candle inside of the lantern will light when approached within 5ft.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN A LANTERN IS LIT?
When the candle is lit, the lantern’s door swings shut and a Rift tears open around the immediate area of the Wickid and whomever activated it. (See "The (Wickid) Rifts" below for more information.)
Once the Wickid's candle is lit, the lantern can no longer be opened except by the complete destruction of the Wickid. (See "Destroying A Wickid", below.)
THE (WICKID) RIFTS.
In appearance, the Wickid Rifts are identical to the rifts that open over the Traverse Trove. Unlike normal Rifts, the Wickid Rifts remain open indefinitely, causing the Aether in its vicinity (up to a mile in radius) to warp and conform to the world it is connected to.
Each Rift is directly connected to a WICKID (see "The Wickids", above), which is hidden somewhere central to the dimension area the Rift has opened.
The Rifts will grow in size depending on two factors: the strength of the desire keeping the lantern lit, and whether or not the Wickid is intact or destroyed.
If the Wickid incurs damage, the Rift will convulse and become increasingly unstable. It will attempt anything within the realm of the Echo’s home world rules to protect itself and the Wickid that has spawned it. This includes but is not limited to:
Manifesting dangerous creatures native to an Echo’s homeworld (monsters, animals, or other creatures that would not be applied by a current or future member may consider.)
Manifesting dangerous terrain, complete with all hazards native to the Echo’s homeworld.
Turning the desire fueling the lantern against the Echo who is attempting to put out the lantern, regardless of this desire’s previous alignment, if the desire was sentient. (See “What Counts As A Desire”, below.)
When the Wickid is destroyed, the portal will grow unstable and collapse, causing a visible scarring in the part of Arcanus Isle where the Rift had manifested.
EXAMPLES: completely damaged or deceased plants and fauna native to Arcanus Isle, mutations of native flora and fauna to echo the homeworld’s flora and fauna, and/or pristine buildings turned into dilapidated ruins or ruins becoming pristine.
WHAT ARE THE RIFTS?
The Rifts are tears in space-time, and are direct mirrors of the Echoes' deepest desires. If the desire is strong enough, the Rift can even create a fragment of the Echo's homeworld — exactly the way the Echo remembers (or desires) it to have been.
WHAT COUNTS AS "DESIRE"?
An Echo's "desire" is up to interpretation! But for some places to start, we recommend some of the following ideas:
Consider your muse’s heart’s desire. How would that manifest in the physical world?
A memory that your muse treasures most. The Rift could recreate this memory, allowing the Echo (and any visitors) to "walk through memory lane".
A physical place that was often frequented by your muse. The Rift can cause the Aether to recreate the area (up to a mile in radius), as if it has been transported directly from the Echo's homeworld and ripped out of any point in time that the Echo most favors. [1]
An object or distorted fragments of a significant person or thing that your Echo would like to interact with in some capacity. [2]
[1] If the Desire is a physical place, the area in Arcanus Isle that the space takes up is distorted and "overwritten" by the Echoes' homeworld. This will cause unstable Aether in this area, and destroy everything and everyone native to Arcanus Isle within its radius, although this may not be immediately discernible. These areas can be places in any pre-established areas on the map EXCEPT FOR THE CENTRAL DISTRICT. Take your pick!
[2] If the desire is an object, then the object manifests within the Rift, although it cannot be removed from the Rift's vicinity. If the desire is a person, then this "person" is considered a RIFT FRAGMENT (Shortened to "Fragment", see "Rift Fragments", below.)
RIFT FRAGMENTS:
Echoes may spot fragments of a desired person as their heart's desire. They are created out of Ebenos and Ivurie, and are reflections of an Echo's heart's desire. They are not real, and may act as "in character" or "out of character" as an Echo's will may impose.
These Fragments can appear as many times as desired, but may only have an extremely limited ability to interact with the Echoes who encounter them. This ability will deteriorate over time.
A deteriorating Fragment may:
Begin to stutter or “glitch out” as it tries to communicate.
Phase out of existence.
Speak in riddles or other such gibberish.
Or be spotted repeating actions and conversations as if in a time loop within the radius of the Rift.
The Fragment may grow more stable the closer it and the Echo are to finding the Wickid that has spawned the Rift.
Fragments may try to assist or oppose an Echo’s pursuit of a Wickid (or avoidance of it!) at the leisure of each member.
The only way for the Fragment to fully stabilize is to keep the Wickid in pristine condition, which includes keeping the Rift stable.
AS A GENERAL RULE OF THUMB: Fragments may not be a character already established in Aevum Isles unless this has been pre-plotted between yourself and the respective character's Mun. Please note if you have had this permission on the first post of any threads, and any other relevant starters or drabbles. If a character that you are using as a Fragment gets applied, the Fragment will distort and disappear. (Meaning you will have to get permission from the applying mun to continue using the Fragment.) The Fragments are not the real character, and so will not share any memories, experiences, or other development native to the applicant character.
FINDING A WICKID.
As a rule of thumb, Wickids can be found by braving the Rifts that they create based off of an Echo’s deepest desires.
To find a Wickid, all participating characters must complete the following event tasks:
Scope out the Rift
Track the oddities in the Aether towards the center of the Rifts
Find the Wickid within the Rift.
All participants must complete these tasks in the order stated above: Scope → Track → Find. (See "Roll Results" for more direction on how to 'complete a task'.)
Once a task is complete, move on to the next task until all three tasks until all three have been accomplished.
The directions for the results for these rolls are described below, but exactly how your character succeeds or fails this result, as well as what setbacks they encounter, is up to writer interpretation.
ROLL RESULTS:
The die you will be rolling for each task is a 1d6, or a standard, six-sided die.
Your goal is to complete each task.
1-2 : The character who made this check gets lost, distracted, or otherwise comes across a major setback, roadblock or other difficulty that makes things harder for all thread participants. REMAIN ON YOUR CURRENT TASK and roll for this same task again for every 1-2 result. 3-4 : The character who made this check encounters a minor setback, roadblock or other such difficulty that threatens the forward progress towards finding the Wickid. Take your following replies to work together to overcome this difficulty (the progress of this is up to writer interpretation). Once this setback is resolved, all thread participants complete their current task. 5-6 : The character who made this check is able to make forward progress by working together and/or using the powers and other resources available to them. This series of events occurs with little to no difficulty. All thread participants complete their current task.
Each participant in a thread takes a turn following their partner. The order of this is up to writer agreement, but Staff recommends whoever INITIATES the thread takes the SECOND turn.
The writer who made the roll attempting to complete a task must post their roll result number at the TOP or BOTTOM of their reply, OR within their tags.
This result must be visible for your partner and Aevum moderators to view on-site. These results may NOT be privately rolled in discord or tumblr private messages.
Staff recommends using Roll A Die for your rolls. (You can roll real dice if you have them.)
DESTROYING A WICKID.
Destroying a Wickid can be done, but only with immense effort on the part of the Echoes. The endurance of the Wickid’s stone body will scale to the relative strength of any Echo who attempts to damage it.
To successfully destroy a Wickid, the participating characters will need to PASS a succession of AT LEAST FIVE ROLLS, the results for these rolls are described below.
1-2 : The character who made this check gets seriously injured by a Fragment or the surrounding unstable Aether. Roll again for every 1-2 result. 3-4 : The character who made this check gets blasted back by the sheer force of the surrounding, unstable Aether. They get hurt, but this is a minor injury. They also manage to do some damage to the Wickid, and/or make the lantern holding the burning candle unstable. 5-6 : The character who made this check successfully damaged the Wickid and its lantern. If the cumulative results are a 5-6 THREE TIMES in a row, the Wickid is destroyed in a total of those three successful rolls instead of the minimum of five.
The die you will be rolling for each task is a 1d6, or a standard, six-sided die.
Your goal is to get at least 5 successful results throughout the thread.
A success CAN be done by either thread participant in any combination, so long as the total of successes in the thread is equal to FIVE. (The only exception being 3 critical successes (5-6) in a row.)
Successes DO NOT have to be consecutive.
Staff recommends using Roll A Die for your rolls. (You can roll real dice if you have them.)
DO ALL MUSES HAVE TO PARTICIPATE?
It is recommended that you do! However, should your choose not to participate, your may start your threads taking place in-universe before the Blue Moon's arrival (During the month of July).
WHAT’S THE PARTICIPATION BONUS?
Aevum Isles awards 500 Emblems for participation in Blue Moon Events.
WILL THERE BE AN ACT II?
No, but keep your eyes peeled for @aevumdaily Blue Moon news reports, Hums from Arcanus natives, and event polls scheduled by Staff that will go live from 08/17/2026 - 08/31/2026!
