lawrence’s warbler is not a species of its own, but a hybrid between the golden-winged warbler and the blue-winged warbler, who are 99.97% genetically alike; the species frequently hybridize where their ranges overlap, and it’s believed they have been doing so for thousands of years. these hybridizations result in brewster’s warblers, which are an expression of dominant traits, and lawrence’s warblers, which express recessive traits. while hybridization between species often results in infertile offspring, but both brewer’s & lawrence’s warblers are fertile. lawrence’s warblers are rarer, due to their appearance being a recessive outcome.
