The Jewel Box Cluster NGC 4755

Over 6,440 light years from Earth in the Southern constellation of Crux, this open cluster is visible to the naked eye as a smudge and contains over 100 actual stars.

With binoculars and small telescopes, the smudge can be seen to be numerous stars in different stages of their evolution, but owing to it’s young age (thought to be just 13 million years old) it contains many of the large B type blue giant stars, and a few that have already depleted their hydrogen main sequence burn, and have moved to helium and swollen to super red giants (such as Betelgeuse) .
