“Whenever I walk anywhere, I’m acutely aware that the dirt and gravel and asphalt that my feet press against is really the sediment of centuries and millennia of devastation. The bones and teeth and thoughts of people who once lived where I live all quietly support my weight as I walk through my neighborhood with tears in my eyes. They once said I’m sorry and I love you to their friends and were exploded by black powder and time. Their bones left to fuse with the dust in the dry heat and wind. Every cruelty and sadness turns solid and weary to support the next generation’s sadness and cruelty.”
