Last week I said I had been putting all my efforts into climbing Snowdon at the weekend and we did it!
I have never hiked before, I have never climbed a mountain before and man it was tough. I learned so many things along route that I wanted to share in case any of you guys are hiking in the near future.
The summit of Snowdon lost in the clouds
1. Get a really good song in your head before you start. I failed to do thisĀ and for the whole 6 hours had āThe bear went over the mountainā going round and round and round and round. Annoying was only the half of it.
2. Your hands and fingers swell at high altitude so make sure you take your rings off before you go.
3. It is a very long time so take a really good buddy with you who you love to chat to.
4. It is a long tired way down too, so the buddy you gleefully chatted all the way up to, you will not want to speak to all the way down.
5. Sugar is essential for higher altitude pick me ups so pack a big bag of haribo & also take lots of water.
6. You can FaceTime at the summit so do this it will be a once in a lifetime FaceTime :)
7. There are no loos so be prepared to jungle wee where all can seeā¦gulp!
Myself and Rose set off about 10.30 and the car park was full so we parked about another mile lower down the mountain and walked up. We were happy, buzzing and full of excitement.
The weather was changeable so we had to pack layers and waterproofs, food, drink, hats and scarves. I will put up a video next week highlighting the essentials you need to take.
We decided to head up the Miners TrackĀ and we were so glad we did. It eased you into it and then when you got to the top, took all you had left. The decent was a mixture of elation, exhaustion and pain.
Ā I had bought new boots about a month ago and had definitely not worn them in enough and I could feel a blister appearing when I was on the ascent so was dreading taking my boots off at the bottom. It took 2 days for me to be able to fitĀ my trainers back on :(
We were lucky enough to avoid any rain and the hike itself was great, it was hard work but not too technical yet offered something extra than your average hike. Plus the view when you get to the top is just epic!
The last 45 mins of the hike to the top was such a struggle. I am not sure if it was a mixture of tiredness and altitude but it was such hard work. The air itself was getting colder and everything seemed closer and tighter but together we made it and you can see from our faces how happy we were.
The final few steps to the summit were amazing and reaching the top I couldnāt resist the opportunity to take an Oscar selfie with everyone else who was there.
Also after having no mobile signal all day I looked at my phone to see I had full bar and 3g so couldnāt resist taking the opportunity to FaceTime my mum & Mike from the top. The sense of achievement up there is immenseĀ and everyone chats to each other and shares their stories of the struggle of the climb. I just thought to myself that is one off the bucket list. Next stop Ben Nevisā¦
