amy pond: on beauty, ageing and birth ( part two here )

The gist of the matter is: The show did not do right by Amy Pond. What we started with was, like any other companion, a girl who was stuck, wedged into a place and a time that didn’t suit her. A girl who desired more, who had the potential to be more; a girl who would eventually find a home and a purpose among the stars and through that experience, find herself. Because that is the most basic skeleton of a companion’s arc: the ordinary ascending into the extraordinary and telling us that we are all capable of greatness and that no matter where we come from or what we believe about ourselves, there is something distinctly special and worthwhile within all of us. My purpose in writing this, is that this concept was skewed in Amy’s writing and overshadowed by turning my beloved Pond into a plot device and giving her no room for further growth beyond what she achieved throughout s5. There was a fullstop on Amy’s character, her arc was hindered by Moffat’s shitty sexist writing and the overwrought drama that stripped her completely of agency.

well first of all he’s just generally annoying to me so that isn’t a good start

and (since rory’s character is basically centered around amy i have to bring this up as a second point) i never really bought rory/amy? like one minute he’s the guy that’s sort-of-her-boyfriend and next they’re getting married and then all of the sudden they have a strong and universe-shattering romance and i’m just like “……….. but why”

he only tags along (on time traveling) for amy and then he complains about it

jesus if i was supposed to like rory post-aotd i think i might have missed that memo

oh boy………………………i doubt i have a single hot take about amy y’all haven’t heard already, but she’s a lesbian and rory is comphet. he is literally a walking obligation in S5 and a vehicle for causing amy guilt resulting in emotional self-harm and self-sabotage from S6-S7…amy only ever loved eleven, and that love was so much more nuanced…unhealthy and soul-crushing and revitalizing and world-upending, but not romantic…the idea of exclusively being attracted to men you idolize and view as untouchable is so…oh god, i can’t even talk about it, and that coupled with what i talked about the other day…amy’s compulsive need to diminish and trivialize arguably the most meaningful relationship in her life by writing it off as a passing fancy, silly flirtatious amy…”you are sweet, doctor but i really wasn’t suggesting anything quite so long-term” like she hasn’t been dreaming of this chance her entire life, yearning every second of every day to be literally anywhere but leadworth, like she doesn’t feel like she’s losing her mind every time he goes away again and leaves her tied down by real-world obligations to a life from which she derives no joy whatsoever, a life that doesn’t allow her to explore or discover or learn and certainly doesn’t allow her to be free….

the hot take is that amy’s arc eventually became “your real life can be extraordinary, too” and that’s bullshit because it never proved amy’s life could be that for her! we never see her relationship with her parents develop once they’re returned to her, we’ve never seen much of her relationship with her aunt sharon either and what we do see doesn’t inspire confidence…rory is emblematic of everything amy has been running away from her whole life, and it’s not immature, to realize your life isn’t what you want it to be! it’s not immature to make a change, to follow your dreams and do what you love! if this is a fairytale, let her live that! let her be extraordinary, let her travel in the tardis…let her live stories too instead of just telling them
