McCarthy’s book on stabilization theory (my favorite book about evolution, available for free on his site) finally has an honest-to-goodness academic citation (see here) in an article included in this Springer book about macroevolution.

These “gardens” that i sometimes draw (manually, still, although chaotic-renan has expressed some interest in helping me write code to generate them) are inspired by my thinking about the dS/CFT correspondence and conformal cyclic cosmology.
dS/CFT is a form of gauge/gravity duality introduced by Andrew Strominger. It’s quite different from the more-familiar AdS/CFT, which is amenable to string-theoretic methods, and involves a conformal field theory living on the timelike boundary of the hyperbolic Anti-de Sitter space solution to Einstein’s field equations. The boundary has one spatial dimension fewer than the bulk (interior spacetime), and translations in this radial direction come from renormalization group flow on the boundary. In particular, short-distance (high-momentum) physics in the bulk comes from long-distance (low-momentum) physics on the boundary, and vice versa.
On the other hand, dS/CFT is a gauge/gravity duality for the de Sitter space solution to the Einstein equations, which is resistant to string-theoretic methods (but seems to work well with Vasiliev gravity). In this positively-curved space, the conformal field theory has no timelike boundary to live on, and instead lives on the spacelike boundary at future infinity. Now it is the time evolution which emerges from (reverse) renormalization group flow on the boundary! In other words, the long-distance (low-resolution) features of the boundary at future infinity correspond to the bulk’s past, and vice versa. Strominger suggests that the distant past and future of our universe (which indeed appears to be asymptotically de Sitter in both time directions) correspond to conformal fixed points of the boundary renormalization group flow. This means that the future infinity boundary is scale-invariant (looks like a fractal) at very high and very low resolution.
Conformal cyclic cosmology, put forth by Roger Penrose and Vahe Gurzadyan, suggests that the future and past boundaries of FLRW spacetimes with positive cosmological constant (such as dS) should both be described by a conformally invariant theory, and that furthermore these two boundaries are conformally equivalent. As a result, the conformal future of one “aeon”, as they call the period between boundaries, can be sewn onto the conformal past (i.e. big bang) of the next: thus, history loops on a cosmological scale.
Combining these two concepts, i arrived at the idea of a toy model where (backwards) time evolution was given by a kind of coarse-graining, and which loops. For now, these “gardens”, as i have taken to calling them, are the only concrete embodiment of my thinking on this topic. Questions and criticism would be appreciated.
It becomes less surprising that area is quantized in loop quantum gravity (as opposed to length or volume) when your realize that, in general-relativistic units, area and action have the same units.

The canard about “It’s scientifically impossible for bumblebees to fly” is one I struggle to respond to. The person repeating it is communicating
“I like mystery”
“I like inspiration”
“scientists don’t know everything”
“I am going to work my ____ off today”
…and I don’t want to play the pedant. (Nor do I want to smile & nod.) I think my new response is going to be to ask them to bring up this ultra-slo HD video of bumblebees flying, bypass the arguing phase, and watch the awesomeness of this tiny beast.
Honeybees flap and rotate their wings 240 times a second and everyone can just have a great time marvelling at that.
It is interesting to note that Ising seriously believed in his conclusions and felt very frustrated that the model has no usefulness and gave up physics research! Being a Jew, he was prosecuted in Germany and was dismissed from his job in 1933. He managed to run away from Germany and lived in Luxemberg from 1939 to 1947. During all this time he had no contact with physics and lost track of future developments about the model. Only in 1947 when he went to U.S.A. to teach did he realize that his name has become immortal because of the work done by other people!

Edward Witten - What Every Physicist Should Know About String Theory
The first half of this lecture is a very nice and uncomplicated explanation of how quantum general relativity in 1 dimension (with some matter fields) is equivalent to a quantum field theory on a (possibly curved) manifold, whose dimension is equal to the number of matter fields. This is done in a Euclidean (rather than Lorentzian) signature to avoid technicalities.
Then he moves on to describing the generalization of the above to 2 dimensions, where he shows that requiring conformal invariance (in addition to diffeomorphism invariance) reduces the degrees of freedom in the metric to a finite number for any particular 2D Feynman diagram, gives a nice state-operator correspondence, prevents the appearance of ultraviolet divergences, and yields a theory of quantum gravity on a general manifold (not just a quantum field theory). This is the essence of 2-dimensional conformal field theory and thus string theory.

We can't have bulk observables in quantum gravity, because once the metric starts to fluctuate, the points move around, and we no longer know what we mean by the correlation function at two points. So that's why we're forced to talk about boundary observables.
