gith orthography is driving me insane, because why are there all these apostrophes. what do they do. they don't represent any specific sound. they don't delimit syllables (not used often enough and are sometimes even placed in the middle of one), words (they use spaces) or functional morphemes (appear in words consisting only of content morphemes). they're not used for compounds (appear in names and simple words). they don't separate diphthongs or consonant clusters (also appear between vowels and consonants). they don't demarcate stress (jhe'stil kith'rak has stress on the second and then first syllable respectively). there's two instances where they suddenly represent a glottal stop (when lae'zel says gh'ath, and when therezzyn says ch'r'ai), which happens nowhere else.

so in streets of minrathous, neve thwarts aelia's first attempt at destroying the city, but before their showdown, she describes aelia as wearing a "bronze mask". she discards it pretty early on, and it looked different than the one we see cyrian wearing, but imagine if that was an evanuris bond mask. that thing easily drove cyrian, one of the good guys, to literally kill his own people. now imagine what it would do to someone who was already a fanatic.

and given that she's insane about remaking tevinter in her image, which is right up elgar'nan's alley, it would probably have been him the mask was bonded to. would also explain why, of all places, you find her in sanctum lusacan in veilguard.

#for the record i don't think it actually is a bond mask but can you imagine #even if she discards it and breaks the connection the damage would already be done #i imagine having elgar'nan in your head for all of five minutes would drive even the most well-adjusted person mad #although i have no idea if the magic would even work with the evanuris still locked up #anyway the wording got me like “!” bronze mask you say #dragon age #dragon age veilguard #dragon age the veilguard #datv #neve #neve gallus #aelia #f: dragon age #c: neve gallus
