BASIL'S PLAYLIST
Human by Christina Perri
"I can hold my breath I can bite my tongue I can stay awake for days If that’s what you want Be your number one
But I’m only human And I bleed when I fall down I’m only human And I crash and I break down Your words in my head, knives in my heart You build me up and then I fall apart 'Cause I'm only human”
Basil is many things. A scientist, a detective, an actor…a machine. Often times he hides his emotions, preferring not to let them get in the way of his work. But sometimes, he falls apart, and sometimes, he isn’t a machine. He’s human, whether or not he wants to be.
The Trick to Life by The Hoosiers
"The trick to life is not to get too attached to it, The trick to life is not to get too attached to it, You’d kill for answers but learn to live with, Questions, Who what why how and if, I’ll sit back detached tear our your hair, Oh but on the contrary… ”
Friends, love, relationships. Things Basil actively avoids. Developing emotional attachments, in his esteemed opinion, only hinders his work. So he stays as far away from that sort of thing as he can manage. Its easier that way, or so he thinks.
Youth by Daughter
"And if you’re still breathing, you’re the lucky ones. 'Cause most of us are heaving through corrupted lungs. Setting fire to our insides for fun Collecting names of the lovers that went wrong The lovers that went wrong.”
Basil has always been different from others. In many ways, he believes himself to be superior to ‘normal people’, but while he masters most things quicker than others, there is one thing that has proven difficult for him— regular human emotions. Though part of it is at his own fault, he has never been able to feel emotions in the same way that others do, and though he tell himself that he doesn’t care, he does. And deep down, he’s jealous of those that can truly feel.
Cops and Robbers by The Hoosiers
"We’re at a revolution And we’re baying for your blood We’re laying down the law And your name’s mud You’d like to be a member of the human race You want to be a good boy But you couldn’t stand the taste”
There are few things Basil enjoys as much as a good case. He work as a self proclaimed ‘consulting detective’ solving cases privately presented to him by clients. The thrill of the chase is what Basil lives for, and going long periods of time without a case can often drive him near madness.
Constant Conversations by Passion Pit
"You can tell by look, by the slightest crook In the neck or the blink of an eye Well then we’ll see what they say and we’ll do what they do But that doesn’t mean a goddamn thing You can listen if you want, you can listen if you don’t Yeah they’ll talk, yeah they’ll even sing”
Many things change, but one thing that remains constant is noraml human behavior. It intrigues Basil is many ways, though he often finds ‘normal’ mannerisms rather annoying, and he spends a great deal of time studying people. The way they act, talk, move. Its a mystery to him, and one that he hopes to unravel.
Hurricane by MS MR
"Welcome to the inner workings of my mind So dark and foul I can’t disguise Can’t disguise Nights like this I become afraid Of the darkness in my heart Hurricane”
Basil is brilliant, and often leaves people in awe of his intellect. Many have praised him for his brilliance (though many have also been aggravated by it), and it is no secret that he is capable of great things. Basil fears very little, but one thing he has always feared, is his own mind. A powerful gift, or a terrible curse, he often wonders how much more people would despise him if they knew what went through his mind. If he wished to, he could easily be one of the greatest criminals of the century, and if that isn’t reason enough to fear your own mind, then pray tell, what is?
The Listening by Lights
"I never really ever know what to say When all of my emotions get in the way I’m just trying to get us on the same page (Wish I could explain)”
Basil is an expert at thinking up a witty or brilliant response to anything, no matter the situation. But the one thing that prohibits him from thinking clearly is the one thing he has never been able to understand; human emotion. When he finds himself confused by his own emotions, Basil fails to think straight, which both infuriates and confuses him.
Disarm by Ben Rector
"Well you disarm me oh I know Won’t you let me drop my guard And as hard as I may try You’re in my heart Whisper something warm and soft and sweet What your soul feels These words cannot complete But you fill spaces, hollow places Things you cannot mend So you let go”
In Basil’s lifetime thus far, there has only been one person that has managed to break down the walls he put up. Only one person that he truly cares about, to an extent that damn near terrifies him. An exception to every rule he had previously established. David Dawson. His dearest friend, and the cause of many infuriating and puzzling emotions that have plagued him for years. Unlike so many others, David matters to him, more than anything. And if he asked, Basil would give his life for the other man, without hesitation.
Human by Civil Twilight
"What is this I feel? Why is it so real? What am I to say? It’s only love, it’s only pain It’s only fear that runs through my veins It’s all the things you can’t explain That make us human”
Emotions make people human, and for that very reason, Basil avidly tries to avoid focusing on them. Because of this, he often appears cold and unfeeling, foreign to love and to pain. And he is, but only because he has decided to ignore it. Even so, it’s impossible to push away all emotion, so sometimes, no matter how hard he tries, he experiences emotions so strong and new that he wonders if he’ll crumble.
No Light, No Light by Florence and the Machine
"You are the night time fear You are the morning when it’s clear When it’s over you’re the start You’re my head, you’re my heart No light, no light in your bright blue eyes I never knew daylight could be so violent A revelation in the light of day You can’t choose what stays and what fades away”
David matters more than anything, or anyone, else to Basil. Sometimes, the intensity of how much the detective cares for the young doctor terrifies him, but he can’t tell anyone that. No, his own emotions are confusing and strange, and he’s put them to the side for now, waiting for the right time to look back and evaluate them.
I hardly thought it possible...
As Basil began to talk, David fell into step with his long stride and listened attentively. It was only years of practice that allowed him to keep up in the slightest but he hardly noticed now. Nodding once, he immediately started to evaluate what he was being told - and most likely what he wasn’t. Of course Basil would speak to the subjects; he would spend the entire time correcting David if David tried to do otherwise. It would save them both time if David pretended to agree now. At the patronizing comment he had to say something. “Is this really necessary? You tend to get rather…brusque with people even when you don’t intend to be rude and patronizing, the fact that you’re even bothering to warn me at the moment means that this could be reaching nearly unprecedented levels. How are you planning to get the other creatures to agree to…whatever this procedure is if you insult them from the start? I thought you said this had to do with a creature’s ability to heal.”
At his friends inquiries, a small smile tugs at the corner of his mouth, a mischievous glint in his eye. He didn't intend to answer any of the questions being directed at him, and he expected David knew as much. It never suited him to lay out all of his cards on the table. Keeping the majority of it to himself provided an element of mystery that he quite enjoyed watching people attempt to figure out. He told his friend more than most, but it was certainly more fun to keep a few things secret for a bit longer. "Well, you'll just have to trust me and my methods," he told him with a note of amusement in his voice, avoiding having to actually answer any questions. "Your only job," he continued, lowering his voice as they walked up to the edge of the lake. "Is to be you, doctor Dawson." With a wink, he turned away and scanned the water, immediately spotting what he was searching for. Mermaids, splashing about like the dull and self obsessed creatures they were.
In an instant, Basil shifted his demeanor, a bright and convincing smile on his face. "Afternoon!" he called to one of them, pouring every bit of cheeriness he could manage into his tone. "Might I have a word?" After hesitating, two of them swam over to the edge, and Basil crouched down to better talk to them. It took only a brief second to read them. Sibling hatred, perfect material to work with. "My...you are truly beautiful," he pretended to appear awestruck. "Far more so than any others. I suppose she is rather beautiful as well," he gestured to the mermaid he had deduced to be her sister, watching as her face began to contort into anger. "But not in comparison to you, my dear," he effectively finished, watching as she grinned. "Excuse me?" the other one interjected, and Basil glanced at her with a look of annoyance. "Please," he rolled his eyes. "You're an abomination. Its nearly painful to look at you, let alone listen to you. Its hardly a wonder you drive away everyone around you. Pitiful creature," he shook his head. "Nothing like your sister." She huffed and dove into the water, splashing him with a fair amount of water as she went, leaving him rather soaked. Sighing, he turned back to the other mermaid, who looked as if he had just given her all she had ever wanted. Time to put the next part of his plan into action. "Forgive me," he smiled apologetically. "I forgot to introduce myself. Call me Basil, and this," he gestured to Dawson. "Is my dear friend, David. We're doctors, and it would be a great honor if we might study a sample of blood belonging to someone as breathtakingly gorgeous as yourself," as expected, she nodded eagerly, prattling on about how flattered she was. "Splendid," he cut her off, reaching into his bag and pulling out a sterile needle. Nonchalantly, he held it out to David. "Care to do the honors, doctor?"

Basil: Not a corner of London's safe while Ratigan's at large. There's no evil scheme he wouldn't concoct! No depravity he wouldn't commit. Who knows what dastardly scheme that villain may be plotting even as we speak...
I hardly thought it possible...
Flaversham. Olivia Flaversham. Spoke the surname first, since a name like that is most often remembered. [raises a brow skeptically] Sure you do, that’s why you haven’t figured out why a school such as ours would want to put all of us in a place such as this. I did not say you should study, I gave ideas of what you could study and pretty darn good ones at that. If stunning is now your synonym for twenty-twenty, I suppose. But honestly, having eyes has nothing to do with thinking up those ideas. That took a mind. A creative and inquisitive one at that. [shakes her head] How macabre of you. Oh no. Yours were assumptions. Mine were deductions based on every word you said and the little furrow of your brow, the crinkle right between your eyes. And your gruffness now says that you are put off by me, which only makes me want to challenge you more, you see. No, you didn’t even see me until I brought myself forward, and the way I dress isn’t very common, so I would never say it was mundane, and I carry myself quite well, if I do say so myself. So no, no assumptions on my part. Now would you like to switch from assumptions to deduce whatever you will about me?
My...and people say i'm arrogant. Tell me, Miss Flamchester, what is it like in your boring little mind? [shakes his head] Your so called deductions could be made by an infant, my dear. If you were trying to impress me, i'm afraid you've only embarrassed yourself. You aren't a "challenge" for me, and I can't fathom why you might think that to be the case. I can think of a long list of things I would rather be doing right now, but if it might somehow shut you up, i'll play your ridiculous game. [already having observed her the moment they met, he sighs and examines the sleeves of his coat as he speaks] High level courses, robotics club, close with your father. He raised you on his own— a modest occupation, something having to do with children. Primary school teacher or toy maker. Growing up without a mother is something that still hurts you, and no doubt the reason you go to absurd lengths to prove yourself to others. And, [pauses to look at her, his expression perfectly unreadable] as you have kindly demonstrated during this conversation, you don't. know. when. to. stop. talking. Its hardly a surprise that you lack any close friends. Or any friends, for that matter.

I hardly thought it possible...
"I know you don’t consider it, that’s why I remind you. One of us has to be aware of it." He’d never exactly understood how Basil could ignore the issue so completely, but trying to get an explanation out of the other man was close to impossible on this sort of subject. At least he could keep an eye on the bigger transgressions to try and keep Basil out of trouble. David supposed that he should be grateful Basil had capitulated so easily on this issue, although it was starting to raise his suspicious for what exactly this experiment would entail. Still, before he could respond, David was staring at the back of the familiar coat and the quickly closing door. Rolling his eyes and suppressing a grin, he rushed to catch up before he lost sight of Basil completely.
Basil was already piecing together various attempts at gaining various creatures consent when he heard his friends familiar footsteps behind him once more. "Now," he began without looking at him, his attention focused on their surroundings. "The lake happens to be rather close, so we'll track down a few subjects in that general area," he explained, making his way down one of the forest trails in the direction of the lake. Gaining permission to run tests on certain subjects always proved to be a tedious task, but for Dawson's sake, he would do it. Basil rarely gave a thought to nuances that normal people bothered themselves with, but his friend seemed to be the only person that made him consider otherwise. It was a bit odd, not to mention slightly off putting, but he had more or less learned to accept it by now. "I do suppose I should explain the parameters for this experiment," he mused with a slight frown, before glancing over at his friend. "You are not to mention the purpose of this to any of the subjects— i'll be the one to discuss that. In addition, refrain from stopping me when I begin patronizing them. I have good reason for doing so this time around, I assure you."
