You know, I think Valancy's look is very fitting for the 1920s as well! She has a rather boyish figure, a small mouth, a small nose, and slanted eyes. Olive is much more of a Gibson girl, which based on when this is set (I believe is late 1910s/early 1920s?) Valancy's appearance will become the trend while Olive will be seen as old-fashioned soon enough.

It’s a nice bit of irony that the Stirlings want to force Valancy to conform to these old-fashioned ways, and then judge her for not being attractive according to that standard, when actually Valancy will be on-trend for the 20s. The same way they think she’s a failure for not being married when actually maybe a woman’s value isn’t determined by having a husband. The Stirlings only think there’s something wrong with Valancy because they’re dicks.

okay picture this; i go back in time and find a victorian orphan child. do i blow his mind? do i break his brain?
