We believe that fans of One Direction deserve to be portrayed as the intelligent, thoughtful and diverse group they are. Too often, the media portray so called “Directioners” as hysterical and naive. When One Direction are next on your show, please consider featuring fans who have made a difference in the fandom and beyond. 1D Fans Give was started in October 2013 by Amy Flanagan, with a goal of raising $22,222 to honor Louis Tomlinson on his 22nd birthday; a goal that was surpassed with a final total of over $23,000 raised. As interest grew, the group quickly grew as well with additional volunteers and charity drives for each member of One Direction. To date, 1D Fans Give has raised more than $138,000 for charities to honor the members of One Direction. In addition to a number of media articles, they were featured on MTV’s Snapchat story. The group raises money through regular donations and individual donations of sales of arts and crafts. There are also auctions, raffles, matching donors, plus merchandise such as mugs, t-shirts and bracelets. Another popular fundraiser is an amazing 92 page full color fan art book, one of which Liam was delighted to receive from Amy when she attended the Baltimore show. One of the rainbow bracelets designed for Harry’s charity drive was worn by him on stage during a concert, in a wonderful show of support. Some of the charities helped have included: The British Asian Trust, Switchboard LGBT, Eden Dora Trust, Doctors Without Borders, and Autism Assistance Dogs Ireland.  Website: 1dfansgive.com

Take Me Home From Narnia was founded in April 2013 as a platform of action against LGBTQ+phobia and related bullying in the One Direction fandom. In February 2014 they launched the Rainbow Direction campaign. They encouraged fans of all sexual orientations and gender identifications, and supporters, to show rainbows at concerts and on their social media profiles, to create visibility and safe spaces. With close to 4300 participants during the Where We Are and On the Road Again tours, and more than 23000 people joining online, they got the attention of publications like MTV, Attitude, Advocate, and others. Fans dressed in rainbows, crafted rainbow and other pride items to hand out and educate others at concerts, rallied together to sell rainbow gear for charity, organized meetups and formed new friendships providing comfort, safety and hope to LGBTQ+ young people. They have been particularly grateful for the support all members of One Direction have shown to LGBTQ+ rights and to Rainbow Direction participants – who frequently get thumbs up by the band, and whose flags, on occasion, get waved around on stage. Goal #1: No Poverty Homeless: Ed Sheeran

“It’s not a homeless life for me.” We want the whole world singing this Ed Sheeran song. In the past 15 years, we’ve halved extreme poverty globally. In the next 15 years we can make poverty a thing of the past. And mark our words, that’s something people can sing about.

Goal #2: No Hunger Listen: Beyoncé

“Listen. We are at a crossroads.” After you finish having goosebumps from Beyoncé’s lyrical gem, think about the crossroads the world is at today. When they write the history of global hunger, 2015 can be known as the year where we took a stand and decided to end it. Full stop.

Goal #3: Good Health Viva La Vida: Coldplay

Live the life. If it were only that easy for some. But there’s hope: we have the recipe. Reduce maternal mortality, separate the word ‘epidemic’ from AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria, and end preventable deaths for children under five. It’s not a pipedream. It’s Global Goal #3.

Goal #4: Quality Education 1+1: Beyoncé

1+1 might be simple maths, but sadly the number of children that go without a quality education adds up to a whole lot more. With Global Goal 4, we’ll make sure children around the world get the education they need and deserve, so that they can make the best start in life.

Goal #5: Gender Equality Run the World (Girls): Beyoncé

“Who run the world?” You know. But truthfully, women leaders are slowly rising in numbers around the world. To go along with Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, 23 other women are leading nations around the world. Sadly, this is far from a universal story. Women and girls face discrimination, are forced into marriage, and face a lack of access to contraception. We have 15 years to change that. Equality. For everyone.

Goal #6: Clean water and sanitation Even flow: Pearl Jam

Wouldn’t it be nice if there was an “Even Flow” of safe drinking water in communities around the world? Right now 1.1 BILLION people don’t have that. That’s why the UK joined 192 other countries to agree on Goal 6. Oh, and don’t forget about sanitation. That could use some even flowing too!

Goal #7: Affordable and clean energy Just breathe: Pearl Jam

In the words of Pearl Jam, “let’s just breathe.” Clean air makes that much easier. If we want to keep up this whole respiration trend going (and we do), we’re going to need clean energy. And everyone needs it, so let’s make it affordable too.

Goal #8: Decent Work and economic growth Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town: Pearl Jam

An Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town might be a familiar sight. Life might not be perfect, but she has a job. She can provide for her family. Her children can go to school. In the words of UK Development Secretary Justine Greening, “the dignity of work is something that all young people should have a right to expect.”

Goal #9: Industry, innovation, and infrastructue The Scientist: Coldplay

“Come up to meet you, tell you I’m sorry.” But don’t be sorry for being a scientist. You sent us to the moon, you’re curing diseases and you’re going to help us deliver the Global Goals. We’re going to have to inspire a generation of those if we want to achieve Global Goal 9 by 2030.

Goal #10: Reduced inequalities If I Were a Boy: Beyoncé

Let’s face it, in too many places in the world, boys have it easier. When they grow up, they probably won’t be asked to stay at home and look after the children. And when boys and girls dream of being the president or the prime minister, the reality is one has a much better shot. Global Goal number 10 is about changing that reality. Instead of girls singing this Beyoncé tune (and meaning it), we collectively need to change the narrative.

Goal #11: Sustainable Cities and communities The City: Ed Sheeran

Wherever Ed wrote this, we think it’s safe to say it was in a city that “doesn’t sleep.” That doesn’t sound very sustainable to us. But the good news is the UK along with the rest of the world is working on it. Goal 11 challenges the world to upgrade slums, adopt sustainable transport, and get cities clean. We’re up for that challenge.

Goal #12: Responsible production and consumption Paradise: Coldplay

Responsible production and consumption. Translation for those sitting on the Grand Lawn in Central Park singing along to this belter from Coldplay: Paradise.

Goal #13: Climate action Fix You: Coldplay

2015 is a watershed moment for climate action. “When you try your best and you don’t succeed” isn’t an option. The planet depends on it. More and more governments are stepping up action to fight against climate change. We will succeed.

Goal #14: Life below water Tenerife Sea: Ed Sheeran

So, Tenerife Sea isn’t just a lyric from British crooner Ed Sheeran.  It’s an actual place and it’s home to loads of sea life that’s you’d expect from pristine water off the coast of West Africa. It’s a good reminder that we need to protect life under sea. Otherwise known as Goal 14.

Goal #15: Life on land Where we land: Ed Sheeran

In 2030, the world will see where we land on Goal 15. It’s a big one. Preserving ecosystems, taking action against poaching, and preserving a world where you can have a love story for old Ed to sing about.

Goal #16: Peace and Justice. Strong institutions. Lost+: Coldplay with Jay-Z

Coldplay’s Chris Martin: I’m just waiting til the firing’s stopped United Kingdom: We are too. We’re committed to helping find a more peaceful world.

Goal #17: Partnerships for the Goals I Was Here: Beyoncé

In order to make the Goals a reality, we’ll need to use every tool at our disposal. That starts and ends with partnerships. Whether it’s with other governments, Project Everyone’s Richard Curtis, the next Secretary General, or Beyoncé herself, we’re poised to change the world for the better. One that the billions around the globe will be proud to recall when they say: “I was here.”

London, August 10, 2015 - Liam Payne’s exclusive interview for Attitude was just released and Rainbow Direction, a campaign by and for LGBTQ+ fans and allies, feels the need to explain what their action is really about.

Liam told Attitude:  “when the law changed in the US there were loads of rainbow flags flying at our shows, but I think that was mainly because people think of the Louis and Harry thing (that they’re secret lovers) which is absolutely nuts and drives me insane.” Since a large part of the rainbows present at each show are brought by Rainbow Direction participants, we want to remind Liam, and Attitude Magazine - which previously reported on the campaign - of their actual purpose.

Based on the observation that the One Direction fandom can be a dark and scary place for the LGBTQ+ public, Rainbow Direction decided to encourage people to make their support for fellow fans of all sexualities and gender identities visible by bringing rainbows in all forms to the shows. The aim is to show fans of all sexualities and gender identities that the 1D community welcomes them.

As stated on the official website, Rainbow Direction’s actions aren’t directed to any band member, but to fellow fans. To understand what the campaign is about, the organisation released this video report of the Where We Are Tour. The video is also available on Vimeo. Through the testimonies of 7 participants, you can experience what Rainbow Direction really means for its participants.  Worldwide, over 3,200 participants have already confirmed their commitment to attend a One Direction OTRA show with Rainbow Direction to make the band’s shows a safe and welcoming place of all, and more are joining every day.

The United Nations is launching a global campaign with a media blitz and an array of stars from Beyonce to Usain Bolt to spread news to everyone in the world about its new goals to eradicate poverty, fight inequality and combat climate change.

The campaign is scheduled to begin on Sept. 25 when world leaders are expected to adopt the 17 goals at a U.N. General Assembly summit.

Film writer and director Richard Curtis, who is leading the campaign, told a news conference Thursday that he wants to make these new goals “much more famous and much more well-known” than the eight U.N. Millennium Development Goals adopted at a summit in 2000 which they will succeed.

To reach the world in a week, Curtis said the campaign is engaging every pillar of modern communications from schools to churches to radio, television, film and all online formats - and it is partnering with sports clubs, public figures, global brands, cinema advertisers, artists and grassroots organizations to get the message out by Oct. 2.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in his final report that the MDGs helped lift more than one billion people out of extreme poverty over the last 15 years, enabled more girls to go to school than ever before, and brought unprecedented results in fighting diseases such as HIV/AIDS. But he stressed that inequality remains, with 80 percent of the people still living on less than $1.25 a day located in southern Asia and sub-Saharan Africa.

The new goals, which have 169 specific targets, range from ending poverty “in all its forms everywhere” to ensuring quality education and affordable and reliable energy, and protecting the environment. They are and will remain officially called the Sustainable Development Goals, or SDGs, which one journalist at the press conference called an “ugly and horrible name.”

But Curtis, the co-founder of Comic Relief who is responsible for movies including “Four Weddings and a Funeral” and “Bridget Jones’ Diary,” has rebranded the name for the campaign, calling them Global Goals, with the words “for Sustainable Development” in small print.

“I think for younger people the Global Goals will be easier,” he said, but adding in sustainable development means “we have our cake and eat it too.”

Curtis said the campaign - with the motto Tell Everyone - tries to make the complicated new goals “fun, bright, entertaining, interesting” to get the world’s attention.

Among the highlights are the first-ever global cinema ad, narrated by actor Liam Neeson; a seven-day pop-up global radio station on the goals streaming online, with an original soundtrack composition by Peter Gabriel; 101,000 billboards from New York’s Times Square to Piccadilly Circus in London and The Tower in Kuala Lumpur; and a song to inspire African youth by the continent’s top artists.

Curtis said the world’s top digital giants including Google, YouTube, Wikipedia, Yahoo and Tumblr will be pushing the goals online. A festival in New York’s Central Park on Sept. 26 to promote the goals will be headlined by Ed Sheeran,Beyonce, Coldplay and Pearl Jam. And people can join sports stars like Gareth Bale and Gary Linekar in a game called Dizzy Goal and add their voice to Bill and Melinda Gates, Meryl Streep, One Direction and many others, all online to support Global Goals.

Today, 09/02, the Daily Mail posted an article with a collection of comments from internet users criticizing One Direction for action/1D. Of course the campaign has had good echos and drew support from political figures and important NGOs actors. However, the criticism that could be read in the article only shows people’s misunderstanding of what the campaign is about…

Some people are telling One Direction to “put their money where their mouths are”, literally asking them to donate all their fortune. Others are mocking the “naive” aspect of the film’s message…

Here’s our answer:

Firstly, as fans and unlike people who don’t know the band closely, we are aware of One Direction’s members many generous donations to several organisations. Over the last few years, they have been listed multiple times among the world’s most charitable celebrities. Some commentators brought up and criticized campaigns where celebrities ask their fans to donate money to charity, and yes, One Direction has been involved in many of those. But how is this wrong as long as they give too? If everyone gives proportionally to what they own, where is the harm? An example of that is when One Direction’s member Louis Tomlinson recently started a campaign with Trekstock calling on people to donate to “Believe in Magic”. It raised around £300k, but he also hosted a ball for the terminally ill children the charity helps, donated £2M according to BiM Liverpool’s twitter account and him and band mate Liam Payne were the biggest bidders at the auction organised for the event. This example makes a clear and important statement.

Secondly, the action/1D campaign doesn’t ask for any donations. It’s part of action/2015, a movement that unites over 1600 organisations and actors from all over the world to try and influence the new UN development agenda which is going to be adopted this year after the Millennium goal agenda came to an end. This movement involves people of all ages and backgrounds, One Direction have decided to involve their fans: a young and dynamic platform. They simply called on them to think about issues that matter and speak about them. If the final message itself can be seen as quite naive, One Direction’s purpose has never been to release a guide to solving all the world’s problems, but simply to send the youth’s message and make sure it’s heard, while also raising awareness and encouraging more involvement in political and social action. This is an effort that can only be praised and we, as fans, are very happy to share its beautiful result, the “Dear world leaders” film, with the rest of the world.

Lastly and as One Direction have millions of very passionate fans from all over the world, their influence and notoriety are highly valuable and far more important than if they were to donate everything they own, and we definitely hope they keep using it the way they did with action/1D.

We as a fandom made up primarily of women and young ladies must empower each other. We must protect each other. We can stand together and help make a difference for so many people whose lives have been turned upside down by domestic abuse. We know that it isn’t a pleasant or fun topic of conversation, but it’s reality.

According to Women’s Aid “the vast majority of the victims of domestic violence are women and children, and women are also considerably more likely to experience repeated and severe forms of violence, and sexual abuse. Women may experience domestic violence regardless of ethnicity, religion, class, age, sexuality, disability or lifestyle. Domestic abuse can also occur in a range of relationships including heterosexual, gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender relationships, and extended families”.

Daily many people are turned away because of lack of space and a lack of funding. This week we will be raising awareness and hopefully adding to Women’s Aid Donations.
