Probably the biggest inspiration for this piece was "The Wanderer Above the Sea Fog" by Caspar David Friedrich, and I'm sure it's influence is evident in my art piece. Unlike the pieces I studied for "Oasis", the contrast present in this piece does the inverse of the others. The lighter colors and monochromatic blues really bring the silhouette into focus, drawing our attention from the sky down to the center of the piece. And unlike the other pieces, the motion of this piece doesn't move in a spiral. Instead, it flows inwards toward the horizon line and vanishing point. I also spent a great deal of time examining the brush stroke direction and character to learn about how the painter successfully created depth in this piece. Though the piece I created has a very different landscape, I tried to emulate those elements in the sky and in the brick.

The other piece that I studied for this was "The Nightmare" by Henry Fuseli. And in particular, I focused on the subject matter of the piece, the light sources, and how the many different elements interact with that subject. While this piece is horizonal, there was much that I learned from the direction of the composition, as well as the light and how it impacted the mood of the piece. The choice, again, to focus the subject in white as a contrast to the dark blacks of the imp and the horse were elements I attempted to reflect in Silver and Malleus.

Unlike "Oasis", I actually didn't utilize the thumbnails I originally drew for this piece, as after I studied "The Wanderer", I felt like I had a very solid idea of how to compose the piece. And... I just went for it.
