I forgot to announce this, but I re-opened sales of “This Is Our Time” a few months ago! All proceeds in 2022 will go to OutRight International's Ukraine Emergency Fund, a nonprofit fund that assists LGBTQIA+ Ukrainians in need of assistance. We’ve had one sale, totaling $5, in 2022 so far. I chose to add 50 cents to the donation to cover processing costs.

“Says who? My dad?”

“Yes, along with the rest of us. Look, I know you’re tired of taking your father’s orders, but it’s for the best. He’s right this time.”

Desmond stopped his escape from the hideout and exasperatedly rubbed his face with his hands. “Run the plan by me one more time, will you?”

Shaun relaxed his shoulders and sat on the crates resting outside their hideout. He was glad he had managed to catch up to Desmond before he disappeared. The assassin was trained by history’s best; they would have had a hard time catching him before it was too late.

“We need to rescue our newest recruit from Abstergo before they can throw her into the Animus. William wants me and Becca to find her in some not-so-subtle ways, draw out Abstergo’s goons, and have you swoop in to save the day. We can achieve two goals this way, save her and take out men Abstergo can’t afford to lose. Pretty simple, I'd say.”

Desmond scoffed. “So I’m, what, supposed to be okay with this? With putting you two in the line of fire as bait? I can do it by myself.”

Who, though?

“Lucky thing they let you in, looking like that,” he comments as he takes the empty seat next to Desmond. Smelling like that, too, he might add, now that he is close enough; not the sharp drowned in a bottle stench he had expected, but sweat and grime and something else that tickles his nose in all the worst ways.

Desmond’s shoulders tense up, for all he tries to hide it under turning in his stool. “Hello to you, too,” he grumbles, dropping his hand to send him a glare.

Anger, hot and potent, curls into her toes, her chest, and her mouth is opening before she can stop herself.

“If you hadn’t fucked around for ten years in New York, we wouldn’t be in this position!”

Silence. Suffocating and cold surrounds her, swallows the light from the room and forces her to watch Desmond straighten. She’s expecting him to yell back, to bite and spit and do what she feels he does best.

She can only shiver when he smiles, an odd chuckle leaving him that carries no humor and all teeth.

“You got me there, Luce.”

She tries to apologize that night after they grant him an extra run. He passes her without a word, and she can’t help but feel like something had just fractured in front of her.
