Paaerduag-The Symbiotic Duo

Paaerduags are an odd species rarely documented throughout STAR WARS. The creature consists of two conjoined bodies: a large, mottled brown body who controls movement, and a smaller, green body in charge of communicating with other species. Hailing from the planet Storjus (as it is called in Galactic Basic), the creature’s real name and origin cannot be pronounced, or even heard, by most other lifeforms. This is because it takes two mouths to pronounce it’s name, and two ears to hear it. This is why it is only the green body that speaks to others, as the frequency in which the brown body speaks cannot be heard by most other lifeforms. The two sentient components are actually born separately, merging and becoming one being as it matures.

There have only been three documented appearances of Paaerduag throughout the STAR WARS saga.

The first of these is in the 2003 video game STAR WARS: Knights of the Old Republic. The player can find a displeased Paaerduag in Javya’s cantina who goes by the name of Ja’Gatcha. Stranded on the planet Taris due to a Sith quarantine, Ja’Gatcha had grown tired of the constant mocking he received from other lifeforms, a problem made much worse by the planet’s anti-alien stigma. A second Paaerduag, Mic'Tunan'Jus Orgu, could be found in Anchorhead, Tattooine. Unlike Ja’Gatcha, Mic'Tunan'Jus Orgu was no homesick, stranded traveller, but rather a merchant. Paaerduags were also mentioned in the game’s sequel, STAR WARS: The Old Republic (2011), but never made a physical appearance.

A New Hope: Special Edition Concept Sketches by Claudia Mullaly

When Lucasfilm began work on 1997′s infamous A New Hope special edition, Lucas wanted to bring back a scene that was shot for the original but never perfected in post-production. This was the shot of Jabba confronting Han Solo outside the Millennium Falcon. There were discussions of how such a weighty creature would move & so artist Claudia Mullaly drew the above concept sketches of Jabba using hover crafts for transportation, the third of which being heavily inspired by Jabba’s sail barge. 

The idea was obviously axed in the end, in favour of Jabba merely slithering along the ground, though this is certainly something I would like to see revisited with other Hutts in some form of STAR WARS media.
