When it comes to consent in fiction there are two parties: the author and the reader. If you choose to read something and you know what might be contained within the fanfiction, then you are consenting to anything that occurs in the fic regardless of your expectations of how things might be carried out. You can revoke that consent at any time, which consists of immediately ceasing any further attempts to read it. Since there is no direct communication between the author and the reader while it's being read, there is only one way to indicate consent in that scenario and that's by whether or not you read it.

AO3 specifies that certain tag fields are mandatory for a work to be posted, and these include the Rating and any Archive Warnings. If something is tagged using a non-specific tag, meaning either with "Choose not to use archive warnings" or has the rating "Not rated" then the fic could potentially contain any adult or triggering topics and should be treated with caution by the reader.

If a fic is poorly rated, i.e. it has adult content and is rated General Audiences or Teen, or contains content surrounding one of the warnings and is tagged as not containing it, the fic violates the AO3 TOS and should be reported to be dealt with by AO3 admins. This would be an example where consent to read a specific topic was not given by the reader since they did not have any knowledge of it before reading.

However, if you know about a warning or a tag going into a fic and you continue to read it despite knowing about it, then you have given consent to the scenario and are not allowed to harass the author over a decision you made! Even if you don't like the content or the fic triggers you. You're allowed to feel bad or even feel disgusted at the content, and you're allowed to regret having read the fic, but you cannot complain to the author. They gave you an adequate warning that you either ignored or purposefully put yourself through, and the blame in that situation lies solely on you.
