Life Is A Beautiful Attempt

I’ll say this, SydCarmy wise I think it was the best possible outcome given Christopher Storer and the continuous running away from the ship. Like, it could have been worse…. Waaay worse, marriage/reconciliation with Claire or straight up denial from something ever happening between Syd and Carmy… and we didn’t get that! So I count it as a win. It’s ambiguous enough that something might happen eventually and also it gave us sooooo many scenes between these two and their dynamic, that it can fuel my imagination for ages.

Now, regarding the season as a whole and the series. That’s where I’m still not fully convinced. I think this season had a bit more movement and growth and the seventh episode was really The Bear at its best. It was emotional, full of tension and focused on Carmy and Sydney without abandoning the other characters entirely. Truly the one episode I would rescue from the whole season of I had to choose one and the way I would have ended the series (plus the two star revelation and hug of course). In a high, cause don’t even ask me about the eight episode which the more I think about it the more I hate it.

The thing is I still stand by the fact season 3, 4 and 5 could have been one season. Even in this last season, there’s still so many scenes that are filler? I could have been fine without the whole Jimmy/Computer/Cheese subplot, a lot of those moments could have been an email… thankfully the Facs were significantly reduced… but could have been more reduced ngl. And the general idea of this season and the last two could have really been told in a solid one last season. Having said that, this last one was definitely better than the third and fourth, just because of Caramel.

This show is special to me, it has inspired me to create and, honestly, just because of that is wonderful that it exists. However, I think Storer (and all the writers from every season) was really good at sowing seeds of significant moments and character traits that could have been explored better. Is like he created amazing bases that make for a great structure but then didn’t know how to use them for greatness? Have the hamachi for example. All those links between Carmy and Syd, the way food brought them together… and then it gets resolved in a five second exchange where is not clear if she lied or if she changed it to suggest she got inspired by it or if it’s a continuity error… because neither of them mention it again and their reactions are quite short and subtle… which is crazy. Same with the sorry sign which had a lot of potential for greatness and just disappeared. And don’t get me started on how Caramel could have ended with what Carmy realized in that weird ass interview for the internship… because Phil from Groundhogs Day doesn’t realize he has to change after the loop is over he does so he can get out. So, he dropping this big monologue on an extra we have never seen and will never see again… is certainly a choice. It’s just insane because I know all these things Storer stablished had soooo much potential because I have used them in all of my fics but then it seems like he didn’t get a grasp for most of them. I do think the one character arc that I love all the way through is Richie’s, I think he completely got him right. For a second with that end it even felt he was more of a main character than Carmy lol.
