Facebook PSA
Hey all, a little Social Media PSA if you have the Facebook App on your phone.Β
With the last update, Facebook began tracking something called βoff-Facebook Activityβ which keeps up with all apps and browsing you do off of Facebook and collects that information with the purpose of targeting adsβ¦ which means theyβre selling it to ad agencies. This includes access to any banking apps on your phone and your spending habits.Β
Β Not only is this a major breech of privacy that Facebook didnβt have to tell us about when they updated the app, itβs, of course, automatically turned on.Β
To turn it off, go into your Facebook app, pull up the menu from the main screen [the button with the three horizontal lines] scroll down to security and privacy, find βOff-Facebook Activityβ and hit the button that lets you manage your history to see all the apps itβs been collecting from. From there, you can clear the information itβs already collected, and there will be a button regarding βFuture activityβ where you can turn the βfeatureβ off, at which point Facebook with give you an βARE YOU SURE YOU DONβT WANT US COLLECTING YOUR INFORMATION TO SELL YOU THINGS???β screen. Yes, yes you are sure. Because this is disgusting.Β
Facebook made this super hard to find, so Iβve written up instructions for how I got through it (on my app - I donβt know if there are other versions where itβs different):
From Facebook, go to the Menu by clicking on the three horizontal lines on the top right of the screen.
Scroll down to the bottom and select the Settings & Privacy drop-down menu.
Then select Settings (the first option under the drop-down).
This will take you to a screen showing multiple headers with lists of links under them
Scroll down to Your Facebook Information and select Off-Facebook Activity.
The next page has a short explanation of Off-Facebook Activity. Click Manage Your Off-Facebook Activity after the What You Can Do header.
This will take you to a screen with an option to Clear History (which I recommend). To actually turn off this feature, you will have to click the three dots at the top right of the screen and select the Manage Future Activity option that pops up.
This will take you to a page explaining in more detail what theyβre doing. Select the Manage Future Activity at the bottom of the page.
THEN you can finally select the toggle to turn off Future Off-Facebook Activity.Β
If itβs glowing blue with the circle on the right side, itβs active, and if itβs gray with the circle on the left side, itβs off.

Most corporate social media accounts use memes to try and appear hip with the kids so theyβll buy their product but the Sparknotes twitter account is clearly just run by a literature geek who was told they could make memes about old books and is having the time of their life doing just that
People always gloss over how mentally damaging it can be to work in retail. I fucking hate that whenever I say βI could never work in retail againβ someone has to reply βYou snowflake millennials canβt take a starter job because you have to INTERACT with other peopleβ No. Fuck you. Iβve worked as a planetarium host. Iβve worked as a public speaker. Iβve worked as a tutor and as a student teacher. I can work with people. I can work with crowds. Retail was fucking different. Retail was being treated as a subhuman. Retail was being treated so poorly that you have anxiety attacks before work. Having to work retail was a factor in my last suicide attempt. If I hear you say one fucking word about retail workers playing the victim I will personally break every bone in your body. Fuck You.
The holidays are coming up. Retail workers are going to be spiraling into a nightmare beyond human comprehension. If youβve worked retail, you know this. If you havenβt, be aware of it. Please be kind to every retail worker you come across. Please be patient and understanding. It is misery out there.

I wish more people...cis and trans...understood that transitioning and passing is just not possible for a lot of us and never will be. Iβm so tired of the trans narrative being focused on this supposedly universal experience.
Iβm extremely disabled. I will probably never be able to transition in any capacity. I am dependent on my bigoted family and on a bigoted medical system to survive. HRT could hurt my body very badly and I cannot bind because of chronic chest pain. I cannot have top surgery for those same reasons.
Thereβs so much more to being a man, woman, non-binary than how you can present yourself. And a lot of us are trying desperately to come to terms with that. With the idea of being closeted forever or just straight up trying to navigate our own identies among other trans people more privileged than us.

Itβs so fucking frustrating. And frankly Iβm getting pissed off because tucking and binding are dangerous! I get so worried, especially with trans youth who could really hurt themselves π° being told you HAVE to conform to this presentation or you arenβt trans, pushing it as the ONLY way to feel better if you're dysphoric is not safe! Itβs not helpful!
