i've been trying so hard to figure out where my story should start and setting the tone and i can't get it right, so i'll just write the scenes that keep playing around in my head instead and figure it out later
I reached 22,000 words today because I literally couldnāt stop.
things Iām struggling with:
-the concept of chapter length
-Not Enough Vibes
-Pacing probably
-the overuse of starting a sentence with a pronoun
I hate the idea of proofreading and editing but Iām also massively looking forward to it so that things flow together better.
Non-writing activities that actually help your writing
To get better at writing, you have to write. Yes⦠But what about the times when you genuinely donāt feel like it?
First of all, itās alright! Itās not the end of the world! Youāre not a failed writer if you have a down day. But if you really feel like doing something that pushes your writing along, but isnāt actually writing, here are some things you can do! ā
š Planning out your next chapter When in doubt, plot it out. Sometimes you might simply be stuck because you donāt have a clear path forward. A simple outline of all the major beats in your next chapter can really put things into perspective.
š Writing an impromptu scene Every writer goes off and fantasizes about a scene in their novel that isnāt actually part of the plan. Treat it as if it was a fanfic of your own novel and give it a shot! Writing it as fanfiction takes the pressure off, and might just get your creative juices flowing again.
šReading a similar book for research This is aĀ super helpful and fun way of doing research for your book. Dig out similar books in the genre and get reading. A great way to get book recommendations is to speak to some bookish people and tell them a little bit about the story youāre writing. Often, they can have great recommendations of a similar book vibe that could help you along.
š Actually research For whatever type of book youāre writing, youāre going to have to do some research. Whether itās describing architecture in a fantasy world, or making sure your facts are correct in a historical setting, research is a crucial part of writing. Perhaps if your creative side of the brain isnāt feeling up to it right now, your logical one might be of us and help you gather some facts to make your writing more authentic.
š Edit or rewrite previous chapters If you have the need to work on your project, but can't bring yourself to write some more, work with whatās already there. Itās inevitable that some of the chapters you wrote, you arenāt entirely happy with. This might be the time to try something new - open that chapter side by side with a fresh document and rewrite it by changing one integral part of it.
š Think on it Yes, we all fantasize about our projects and our characters. But how often do you actually stop and truly think about your story as a whole? How often do you try to figure out that plothole before saying youāll leave it for later? It might help to meditate for a bit, clear your head of distracting thoughts and focus on the problem in your writing that you need to solve.

Book:Ā Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas Start Date: 2017? Finish Date: July, 2018 Rating: *** // *****
Iāve started and stopped this book so so so many times. I checked it out from my library (no lie) five times before I ended up buying it because this book constantly has a hold wait. This is one of the most popular, widely talked about book series Iāve seen on social media and I really really wanted to find out why.Ā
I did read and finish Maasā other series, A Court of Thorns and Roses, and managed to get through that within a couple of months. What was it about this book that made me struggle for so long? Was it just me?Ā
To start, this book is clearly Maasā early writing. It was published in 2012, and definitely reads like a poorly written fanfic. There are quotes from characters and descriptions that made me really question what was going on. The story lagged several times, and I feel like several villains could have been fleshed out so much better.Ā
Celaena Sardothien is also a strange character. Criticisms Iāve seen of her are that sheās whiney and, in typical YA Heroine, is Too Good At Everything. However, in this book, you rarely get her side of being an assassin. Her inner monologue was heavy in the I want to kill you realm, but the lack of backstory or evidence of her bloodlust made her character fall flat.Ā
The Crowned Prince, Dorian, was also a bit stale to read through. He flipped too quickly between Playboy Prince to Devoted Lover, and didnāt really hold any qualities I would associate with a prince at all. Maybe Iām coddled by Marissa Meyerās intricate writing, but much of Dorian himself was glossed over in favor of a boy who really likes this pretty blonde girl.Ā
And Chaol....I just kept reading his name asĀ āCholā instead ofĀ āKay-alā and thatās my own downfall.Ā
Overall, pacing and lack of character depth knocked off a few stars for me, but as I begin to read Crown of Midnight, weāll see what happens. With all the hype that surrounds this series, I can only hope it gets better? My goal is to catch up with the series by the time Kingdom of Ash releases! Tell me what you think of this book and series - Iād love to know more!Ā
