Basically back in the day in like... 2011 I believe when they were trying to come up with a name for the band, they couldn't agree on a name so one night Michael just kinda came up with it and threw it out as a suggestion, it didn’t really mean anything at the time it was just kinda a throwaway name that stuck and the secret identity of the mythical 5th second kind of became an inside joke in the fandom over the years because of that exact question lol

Why are they called 5 seconds of summer when there's only 4 members? Obviously because there's a secret 5th member we don't know about 👀

Or sometimes another artist or someone they work with can be appointed the honorary 5th second, Niall Horan is a popular example of this historically from the early days when they toured with One Direction. The band has also acknowledged the fans as the 5th second in the past as well, so the 5th second is like a nebulous concept in a way. And a title that can be bestowed upon the worthy ✨️ lol
