~ Connie Maheswaran’s finally made a friend, finally someone her age—but there’s a small problem. Stephen the selkie isn’t the most well-versed in how to act human, and he’s torn between his life at sea and his desire to break from his clan and explore what the human world has to offer.
~ As his friendship grows with Connie, new dangers approach on land and sea alike. Suspicion, determination, and secrets abound as Connie helps guide the magical boy through. But will the humans accept Stephen’s strangeness without discovering his powers? Will the selkie clan let Connie take the lead in navigating a treacherous universe? What are the limits of love?
Introduced Characters:
Connie Maheswaran: 12 y/o girl, middle-school student, just coming to terms with balancing selkie secrets and adults who are definitely out of their depth. Loves reading and learning about past/international culture.
Stephen: 11 y/o selkie boy, curious about human life, but has been intentionally distanced from it because of his guardians. Cute but a little awkward, minor speech impediment. Orphaned. Silver steel-like eyes. Loves pizza. Sharp lil’ teeth.
Priyanka Maheswaran: 45 y/o woman, Connie’s mother, doctor and advocate, very concerned about Stephen’s lifestyle. Does not know about selkies.
Greg Universe: 49 y/o man, local de facto babysitter of most of Beach City. Strong paternal instincts kicking in. Minorly paranoid but for good reason. Does not know about selkies, but believes in the supernatural, somewhat.
Garnet: Selkie woman of unknown age, appears mid 30′s. One of Stephen’s “allmothers” (guardians of the clan). Morphs into an massive seal. Distrustful of humans but kind to children. Respects conflict as a necessity. Dark eyes with ruby-colored cracks. Flowing ringlets, dark complexion.
Pearl: Selkie woman of unknown age, appears late 30′s. Pale and strong, like a track runner. Immensely strong and protective. Deeply distrusting of humans, thinks nothing of harming them to keep her clan safe. One of Stephen’s allmothers. Blue eyes with gold lines.
Amelia: Apprx. 27 y/o selkie woman. Not an allmother, but wants to be for status and respect. Short, olive/brown skin, long black hair, almost black eyes with purple opalescence. Used to be in a human relationship but was treated poorly. Knows much about human life.
Rosa: Selkie woman of unknown age, impossible to determine. Head of the local selkie clan, seven total remaining together. Brown eyes with pink streaks in the right light. Diplomat between Connie and clan, still distrusts humans but knows how to keep them in line.
Perry: Apprx. 22 y/o selkie man. Short, pale, weirdly green eyes and a wicked grin. More or less skilled in explaining human mechanisms but not in human words. Bit of a drama-causer and troublemaker, easily amused by infighting and problems he doesn’t have to solve. Short temper.
Jasper: Apprx. 30-35 y/o selkie man. Supernaturally tall, silent, and dangerous. Bright yellow eyes with black streaks/webbing. Hunter for the clan, sometimes sporting a bone mask made from an animal skull. Protective of Stephen to a fault.
