Second Chances
âYour loneliness was temporary. Mine is suffocating.â she replied, âYou cannot be my friend, youâre my brother. Thereâs a difference.â
âFriends are overrated anyways... People just always let you down... Though, family is just as bad, I suppose. Mother never loved me, ha! Neither did our father, letâs not be blind here, Zuzu... You and I are so vastly different, but I canât bring myself to keep trying to be better than you. Is it possible for two things to be different but equal? Isnât someone always inherently better than the other person?â she trailed off, staring blankly ahead of her. Behind all of her hatred and anger, there was sadness and insecurity. A constant battle of egotism and depression raged inside her. Who was she? What would she become? Could things ever really change?
âEven if you fix me... No one will ever trust me. No one will ever be able to see me as anything other than a monster. I... I donât think thatâs such a good thing anymore. I donât know the difference anymore. Zuko, you know this, I am condemned. Even if I am a changed woman and you develop pride and respect for me, no one will believe you. People like me donât get second chances. I know that.â
Azula was self aware of her fate. Every scenario she could possibly think up and execute ended one of two ways â death or judgement. In truth, the princess couldnât decipher which was worse. She was never going to get anywhere. Even if her father had won, she wouldnât have been able to handle the weight of the coveted position of Firelord. This new life was as unsavory as her pretend one.
âThere is no place for me here.â

Second Chances
Her own safety? Was she a child? She was oh so close to lashing out on her poor brother. Instead, the princess took in a deep breath; arguing was pointless. Even though she was right, there was nothing she could possibly do if Zuko was upset with her. Sheâd merely have to convince him that she was more than fine. In her weakened state she wouldnât be able to hurt anyone. Azula let out a deep sigh, amber eyes glaring at the ground.
For tonight, she refused to think of her goals in life. The lack of direction, although depressing, was a nice change in pace. There were no more overwhelming duties that consumed her time â she could focus on herself. What Azula wanted above all else would not happen in this reality. She had shown that she could not handle the immense stress of leading a nation, much less defeating her brother. For the first time in her life, she felt like the inferior little sister.
âWe both know this life is not going to satisfy me for very long... Perhaps you should consider that. I havenât decided what I am going to do once released, but know this: I cannot compete with you anymore. I am not stupid, I know that,â she stated nonchalantly, her gaze relaxing into a more tired, knowing glance. Surely Zuko knew that he couldnât keep her locked away forever, right? Sheâd go completely insane if she was to live out the rest of this sad, pathetic life. Azula just didnât believe that she deserved it. She couldnât accept her failure. She knew that everyone had the upper hand against her, but she was still alive. Alive, and still a superior bender to her brother. If she had to fight her way to freedom, so be it. The princess would rather be dead than continue to suffer alone in that infernal cell.
âIâm ready to rest for the evening,â god forbid she let Zuko control her, âYou know, the rats arenât bad pets. Much more loyal than my friends ever were. Can you imagine that, Zuzu? Knowing that a small-brained rodent is more reliable than everyone you once cared for?â
If Azula had been aware that Mai had forbidden Ty Lee from speaking to her, she might have come completely unglued. Her brotherâs girlfriend â no â fiancĂŠÂ â had already ruined her life enough! How one could pick a man over a lifelong friend was beyond the princess; modern women showed no loyalty. Of course, the princess would pick herself over anyone else. But! That was self loyalty and thus perfectly justified.
âYou need to learn not to let people manipulate you like that. Mai can wait, sheâs not worth your time.â she drawled, rolling her golden hues, âWhy donât we just ditch this dreadful party and have our own somewhere else? Iâm sick of this atmosphere. They all should be praising me, not Zuko.â

Second Chances
Zukoâs meaning was a bit hard to uncover, and in her delusional state of mind she found it a bit difficult to comprehend to her fullest potential. She furiously pawed at her eyes, unwilling to show her weakness. The princess did not know what she wanted. Her existence was solely to please Ozai for so long that she had not developed any aspirations.
Relationships did not interest her in the slightest, and friends were impossible to find. Besides, who would willingly throw themselves in her life? Mai and Ty Lee were untrustworthy; their bridges had been burnt long ago. She didnât feel the need to have friendships â Azula was more of a solitary creature. A small amount of company was tolerable, but not favorable. The simple question of what she wanted made her utterly confused. Her purpose in life had been obliterated, leaving in itâs wake a broken spirit. Was she supposed to rot? Should she want that due to the fact that she could not feel remorse? Repenting for something she did not feel the need to repent for was an insult. She questioned if her brother was even trustworthy.
Give the man the benefit of the doubt.
âIâd like to be treated better than a deranged prisoner. Thatâs what I want,â she hissed, though her mind was racing to find meaning to her own existence. If Zuko knew she was truly pondering what he had said to her, heâd think she was salvageable. No matter how hard he tried, she knew sheâd never be able to change for him. Her fate had been sealed.
Perhaps that nagging feeling in the base of her skull was some sort of emotion. She did not want to see her brother fret over her wellbeing; in fact, Azula did not want to disappoint yet another family member. Did that mean that she cared for him? Oh, she hoped not!

Second Chances
Zuko had barely dodged a face full of lightning. As she began to realize how disliked she truly was, it wasnât just anger that boiled in her blood; oh no, the blinding hot fury was still there, but now there was a second emotion in the mix. It was a dark feeling, one of emptiness. Total and complete emptiness.
Her stance relaxed and the princess stared at her brother with lifeless eyes as she came to a stalemate within herself. This was a defining moment and her choice would have a major play on her future. She could attack, most likely fail, and end up locked away to rot, or she could let her older brother fix that gaping hole left in her heart. Who even was she? Azulaâs sense of identity was completely and utterly decimated. She deadpanned, deciding that attacking was the last thing that would help her. Lying to herself would not get her through this, she had to accept that she had failed. Her immediate reaction was to place the blame on her father â but that wasnât completely accurate. For once, Azula understood that she needed to take personal responsibility. Perhaps she could not understand the full extent of her heinous actions, but she knew now that they were wrong.
Timidly, she reached out to grab her brotherâs hand, golden eyes wide with fear. âI â I am lost... Who am I, Zuko? ... What am I?â she choked out, tears threatening to fall. Her hand shook as she placed it gently onto her brotherâs, a plea for help. For the first time, her pathetic brother was her only hope. Suddenly, Azula believed that, in fact, she was the pathetic one.Â

Second Chances
It was true â she had been distracting herself from the truth in every way possible. Knowing that everything she had believed in was a complete lie made her insides twist themselves into knots. Her fatherâs ideology had been driven into her brain from a young age. Facing the fact that she had been wrong was too much to handle.Â
âI donât know what youâre talking about! â I â I am feared and revered; is that the equivalence â?â she was practically incoherent, âI am not hated! Thatâs absurd, Zuzu... I am loved by all! Iâm the... the princess...â She looked fearful, glancing at her brother as if the thought had never crossed her mind before. No one could possibly hate her! Why, she was perfect in every way, was she not? Her vulnerability was high, and her breathing grew rough, losing itâs usual silent pattern. âNo... No thatâs ridiculous. I am not by any means hated! Perhaps feared, but that is expected!â
And down came her calm composure. She had suddenly become victim to her own ignorance. Cradling her head in her hands, she doubled over, squeezing her eyes shut; she was absolutely desperate to stop the delusions before she lashed out. She had to stay calm in front of Zuko if she wanted to gain any power at all.
âI am not hated. You must be mistaken!â
â do  you  ever  take  a  break ? â   exhaustion  clung  to  each  word ,  dragging  to  down ,  somewhere  dark   (  like  the  bags  under  his  eyes.  )   he  had  not  felt  his  staff  lift ,  nor  his  stance widen:  raised  a  monk , trained  a  warrior.    â iâm  not  here  to  fight, azula.  BACK DOWN.  â

âThen what are you here for?â
The AVATAR might not have been there for a battle, but she was more than willing to engage in a duel. Delirium lead her to believe that she was being threatened, and she furrowed her brows anxiously.
zuko: i love you and i want to help you
azula:
zuko: you canât just run the palace anymore! after everything youâve done, i donât trust you
azula:
@aaazula
Ruthless, cunning, charming, royal. And she can manipulate fire. Azula definitely had what it takes to roll with the big girls. Which only included herself, Mandy. The blade of the scythe worn upon her back reflected the princessâ visage, and it grew closer when Mandy took a step forth. She opened her mouth to speak once more.
â⌠How bad dâya want the throne, Azula?â
âMore than you could imagine; I have always been the prodigal child. My brother simply is not fit,â she folded her arms neatly over her chest, eyeing the scythe with slight interest. What a shame that metal grew dull! At least Azula had more than enough rage to fuel her already perfectly honed skills. A small smiled curled the corners of her lips, and she inhaled sharply.
âBesides, father chose me. I am a far better bender than my pathetic brother. Not to mention, I am a poised political leader. I am willing to kill anyone for the crown.â
