my favorite quote was the guy saying that gamers are “just a study group that plays games” the way fandoms are “a study group that likes a certain tv show” or whatever. i’m paraphrasing, but the metaphor was very apt.

There’s a big argument that journalists have a lot on, of course, Twitter, about whether or not “Twitter is real life.” I think this is actually an incorrect way of thinking about it. It’s not that Twitter isn’t real life or doesn’t matter. It’s that, for folks like [Andrew] Yang and the many other deeply out-of-touch power users on the site who have been obsessed with him — both positively and negatively — since he first popped up during the 2020 election, Twitter can falsely convince its users that it is a replacement for real life. Sometimes it lines up, but just like any other message board throughout history, you can be super popular on the internet without anyone caring about you at all in the real world.

Something we've been doing for ages and ages behind the scenes at Tumblr is rounding up each week's big events on the site, so everyone can check out what's trending.

And then it occurred to us—maybe, just maybe, we shouldn't keep that roundup to ourselves!

After all, a lot of people on Tumblr stay in their own corners—which is great, we love to see it. But for everyone who wanders over occasionally to the trending topics page and wonders "wait, what the hell is that all about," this podcast is for you! We'll be recapping each week's big moments, providing context for the excitement, and letting you know what's moving up and down the trending lists.

We know your attention spans are not so great, and it's fine, ours aren't either, so this podcast is only around 6 minutes. It might get a little longer when we bring on fun guests to interview, but not TOO long, we promise.
