Lenin
First nuclear powered surface ship - Launched 1957 - Had her first nuclear accident in February 1965 when the coolant was removed before the fuel. 60% of her fuel assemblies were stuck inside one of the reactor cores. The core was removed whole, kept for two years, AND THEN DUMPED IN TSIVOLKI BAY - Had a second nuclear accident in 1967 after a coolant leak. The leak was located by BEATING THE SHIELDING WITH SLEDGEHAMMERS. This caused enough damage the reactor was deemed non-repairable, leading to all three cores being removed from the vessel with shaped charges - Decommissioned in 1989, due to her hull being worn thin by ice friction. Still survives as a museum ship

SS Chicora
Great lakes passenger steamer - Launched June 26th, 1892 - Considered a masterpiece of a great lakes steamer and the flagship of the Graham and Morton Line - Sent out for a late winter shipment of flour from Milwaukee only to be caught in a winter storm. She sank in Lake Michigan on January 21st, 1895. 21 crew and a single passenger went down with her. To this day, her wreckage has never been found with the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum considering her a “Most Wanted” vessel

SS Puerto Rico/El Faro
US Flagged cargo ship - Launched November 1st, 1974 - Started her career as a Jones Act mandated cargo vessel operating between the East Coast and Puerto Rico - Chartered by the Military Sealift Command during Operation Iraqi Freedom, which she would work for 2.5 years transporting military equipment - Returned to servicing the Puerto Rico route - Departed from Jacksonville Florida for San Juan on September 29th, 2015. En route, she would intersect with Hurricane Joaquin due to her captain's failure to adequately prepare for the storm. In the hurricane, she would ultimately begin to take on water and eventually lost propulsion. Although the loss of the ship does land squarely on the captain's poor decision making, the vessel was also poorly maintained and modernized by the operator TOTE Maritime.
El Faro's sinking is probably best remembered online for being the ship that had the "rhut row" logged by the voyage data recorder audio. While, yeah it's a little funny, I think it is important to remember that 33 people died aboard this vessel. Their last moments were terrifying.
Their ordeal continued for more than 4 hours after this aboard the vessel. Some of the last things recorded were the captain desperately trying to talk a helmsman through abandoning the bridge.
We know that some of the crew did manage to abandon the vessel, but they launched in obsolete open air lifeboats into a category 3 hurricane. At this point, their fates were preordained. Not a single crew member was recovered, alive or dead, and the lifeboat that was launched was discovered severely damaged.

Long live the Arleigh Burke!
